my mother is of german ancestry and grew up in a polish neighborhood in the u.s. so we've always had sour cabbage/sauerkraut in our pantry. we even include it in our thanksgiving meal (sauerkraut with our roasted turkey)... which i was doing shopping for today and made sure to buy a large jar of it just so she would stop asking me if i have enough. this soup looks good, i'm going to have to make it when the weather gets a little colder here, seems like it would be very warming

Very interesting story. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Ps, there’s never too much jars of sauerkraut at home 😊

Saurkraut (sour cabbage) is easy to find in most markets in the west. I can't imagine growing up without it. Yum!

In the US 'sour cabbage' is called 'saurkraut' and is usually served with sausage or put into pastrami sandwiches (called 'Reuben' sandwiches).

My Family recipe uses Kielbasa for the meat and my Ex-wife's family used Ham! I would also include some chopped cabbage to make it heartier. At the end we would add a little flour {Rue} to thicken it a bit. Think i will make this tomorrow!

Nice :) What's next? Try some easy and cheap but very bizarre dish for those who never lived in Eastern Europe - fried boiled potatoes with eggs plus onion (and some bacon).

Is it good with or without cumin seeds in the sour cabbage?

I have never tried it with cumin seeds but I’m sure it will be delicious too. I usually go with traditional sauerkraut. Contains literally cabbage, carrot and salt.
