Creating wood and resin coasters is one of the easiest and most satisfying projects you can get started with. At Crafted Elements we currently have FIVE different large format, thick and durable silicone molds designed just to help makers, woodworkers and resin artists create amazing coasters.
In this video we look at a some of our big silicone coaster molds and create two different coaster sets. One set with our hexagon shaped, pre-formed coaster mold, and a second set with our one piece 25x5" long board mold, which we then cut up into coasters before final sanding.

I could never afford it, but I'd absolutely love to own that big rectangle mold, or the large longboard mold or even just the LG set of square coaster molds... If anyone wants to be my Easter bunny this year, any of those would be an amazing basket fillers for me. I don't even want any chocolates with it! Lol

Do you have any videos of pouring two colors of epoxy? For example Black on bottom and clear on top? With maybe an object enclosed?

Do your coaster molds react with bowing or misshaping when using a torch, I would be pouring much thinner coasters? Also, what kind of paint are you using that will not bleed into the resin? How do you clean the molds between uses? Great video, thank you for all you informative tutorials!

Silicone, is only heat resistant within reason, typically to 450C, a flame from a torch is much higher. So if you use a torch you need to wave it briskly, not holding it to the silicone. It will damage the mold if left too long. To be safe, just use a heat gun and keep it below 500C. Regarding paint.. If I laser cut a little object and paint it. I use a regular run of the mill spray paint THEN clear coat it after its dry with a clear spray paint. This tends to stop the paint bleeding into the resin.

Does the silicone release spray leave a cloudy residue or coat when released from the mold while using clear epoxy no color?
@CraftedElements
@CraftedElements 4 ай бұрын
It depends on the release. Some will, the Mann Ease Release 300 is a low buildup release and is designed to prevent this.

Great video. You have a new subscriber. I'm very new at this and it's fun. I was finally able to make my own pen blanks. I hope you still answer comments after a year because I have one. I was afraid that if I poured newly made epoxy over set epoxy, that the two would separate in time. Can that happen? Did yours ever do that? Thank you.

Do you typically keep your coasters at the full depth of the mold when you use the coaster molds? If that makes sense.
@CraftedElements
@CraftedElements 2 жыл бұрын
It probably makes sense to, but its not required. All depends on what you are trying to create.

Love all your videos! Where can I send an email to get a quotation for making a custom made mold framing. For instance 24x36 mold frame.? Thanks for your help.
@CraftedElements
@CraftedElements 2 жыл бұрын
Do you mean a picture frame mold? We actually do not do custom molds because of most customers being unwilling to cover the initial tooling cost for custom work. However, if we have a 36x24x2" mold, you could add an insert to the middle, to create a frame, in effect.

What is the HDP block you use to hold down the wood? Not sure what you mean and where would I get some?

HDPE -> High density polyethylene. Its just a type of plastic that epoxy resin wont stick to, so it makes a good intermediate surface between your resin boards and a clamp or weight (That would get permanently stuck in the resin). You can get the same effect by using tuck tape (sheathing tape) and wrapping a piece of wood in it. If you want HDPE, you can get it from a local plastics supplier OR just search "HDPE cutting board" on Amazon, then buy something 3/4" thick, and cut it up into small pieces,

What do you use to clean the mixing containers so you can re-use they if you are?
@MakeEpicThings
@MakeEpicThings 2 жыл бұрын
If the container is plastic (HDPE/LDPE) we usually just let the resin harden and set, then pop/crack it out. If it doesnt set (it wasnt mixed well) and we just toss the containers.

Don't you get air bubbles leaching out of the wood since you didn't pre-seal the ends?
@CraftedElements
@CraftedElements 2 жыл бұрын
It is possible that this can happen and there were some micro bubbles that came out into the resin, but they are hardly visible. I talk about pre-sealing live edge wood in one of my other videos, I honestly usually DO NOT do it.

I was wondering why your molds don’t have a lip around the top. Otherwise the condensation just runs off.
@CraftedElements
@CraftedElements Жыл бұрын
Im slightly confused honestly, im not sure what condensation we are talking about, but there should not be enough moisture in the air where you are working to cause water to form and pool.

Do you make custom molds ?
@CraftedElements
@CraftedElements 2 жыл бұрын
Generally no. We CAN, but most customers are unaware that there is $500-$1000 in upfront tooling (master form) cost to make most of our silicone molds under 20" in size. Our plastic molds with aluminum tooling require up to $10K upfront to start making

Mild soap, warm water. Nothing abrasive or you will scratch the inner surface of the silicone.
