The conceptis neat but this model is flawed. His actuator plate is too small so couldn't fit all 6 switches on it but only 5. Meaning one coil must be running dead. You can hear how it's not running smoothly, most likely because each revolution is missing one power stroke.

Fun fact: Machines on similar principle (mechanical contactor switching coils with pushrods) were the first electric motors. They even powered the first electric train that run on zinc batteries (nope that Siemens locomotive that is mentioned almost everywhere wasnt the first one). But development of a commutator and later induction machine relegated this to an academic curiosity. Around 50 years ago, electronics enabled the mechanical contactor to be substituted by an electronic one moving the machines capabilities and design options to a whole new level. Now they are known as Switched Reluctance Motors, but still they are not used widely.

That's incredible. And I recognised the 6 switch with the cam lobe design straight away, because it's similar to how old carburettor engines fired each cylinder before electronic ignition timing. There's a cylindrical housing with a set number of rods sticking up depending on how many cylinders the vehicle's engine had. And they were arranged in a staggered circle with a spinning striker in the middle. When it spins, it strikes the outer rods in sequence, sending a spark down to each cylinder, igniting the fuel air mixture. Wicked stuff. Genius 😊 Don't like the background music though, it's shite, had to mute it 😅😆

Nice. One of the biggest drawback is that this design is only good for low RMS as the weight of the magnets moving back and fourth will make it very inefficient. Also the timing can be improved by changing the profile on the lobe that triggers the switchs so that each cylinder can be energized throughout its travel (driving the crank shaft) phase. Good concept though.

Oh, it's just the fact the magnets are moving back and forth? Not all the useless transfers of energy bringing down the efficiency of using electricity to power a motor in the first place? @@nicholasjacks9932 What would be the desired result of powering a turbine from it? If you powered it with a 1 kWh battery you've already got 1kWh of electricity you could just use it for what ever you're trying to power, as you say there will be energy loss, mainly as heat due to friction (those cylinders are unlubricated) Unfortunately perpetual motion devices don't exist. It would kind of be like powering a solar panel from a light bulb or in this case a wind turbine from an electric fan. As for how much energy you would lose? The best way would be to make one and measure how many Watts you end up with, there are so many variables calculating it would be near impossible.

I doodled around with this several years ago, it seems like a good idea but the biggest problem even with electromagnets is power. After they run a bit, it creates a current between the magnets which leads to reduction in power. It builds up more the longer it runs, Sometimes enough to make the engine stop. To me ,the best design is that of an airplane engine, multiple pistons pushing one point,

This has been done using off the shelf solenoids suggesting that magnets aren't needed at all. Just use ferrous metal for the "pistons". As to the micro switches, if you're willing to accept lower performance, know that they have contact bounce time which will limit how fast it runs. Hall switches would allow for higher rpm. I still like the project for what it is though.

@@markzimmermann1516 It is just a curiosity, a fun project. It has no future as it is significally less efficient than a normal electric motor of almost any configuration. The crankshaft mechanism is very lossy and is totally innecessary in an electric engine which can be made rotary natively. Also reciprocating magnetic pistons are very inefficient as a lot energy is wasted accelerating then slowing down and reciprocating their movement at the beginning and end of each stroke. The mechanical micro switches will not easily scale up as they have to commutate very large currents exacerbated by inevitable inductive voltage spikes shortening their life. There are other problems too that I am too lazy to mention. In short, this motor is a non-starter.

The “shaft” he made is actually called a Crank Shaft. The Connecting Rope connect to the Crank Shaft via a series bearings. In a regular combustion engine in which all vehicles except for fully electrical motor. In fact all motors refer to electrical motors. The word engine is strictly for internal combustion engines even though many use the words interchangeably. At the top end of the Connecting Rods are the Pistons. They are connected via Wrist Pins with Needle Bearings and Circlips but each vehicle and/or engine builder uses its own parts and methods but this is an simple example with concerning only the main parts of an engine so it can be understood for those with no vehicle mechanical experience. Next, the Cylinder Head is bolted to the engine short block. The Cylinder Head holds the intake and exhaust valves along Cam Shaft parts as well For this basic example I will not going into details regarding Cam In Block or Overhead Cam(s). Now after the Cylinder Head has been properly installed complete with Gasket and single use Torque Bolts using the current tightening sequence with the proper amount of torque. This There will be a small open area created between the top of the Piston and the Cylinder Head now bolted over the Piston This area is called the Combustion Chamber. Each Cylinder now has its own Combustion Chamber as well! Inside of the Chamber are an air Intake Valve and Exhaust Valve along with a small threaded bore for bolting and properly Torquing the Spark Plugs, with one for each Cylinder. The only other comments I can make is that it’s a cool video but the engine in this video is basically just rotating constantly from the Starter Motor and no engine could be run or driven like this. The engine battery would be depleted quickly!
