Speaking as an Australian living in a 50/50 iPhone-Android marketshare, nobody really cares about any of the "features" of iMessage. To us it's just "the text message app".

I don't know why people would want to limit themselves to a text app anyways. Like don't you have friends on Facebook, insta, etc? I mean I'm pretty much 90% done quitting social media, but even I keep them because they're useful to message people. Screw looking at Facebook or insta, but I'd rather that than do text messages.

Man, I just got the s24 ultra and this thing is top notch 👌 the features are just amazing and I've used android for years, but this last purchase I was actually considering an iPhone. After looking at their internal hardware and ecosystem, I decided there was no way in hell I was gonna sacrifice the better features, hardware, tech, and adjustments that android, specifically the Samsung Galaxy, has. The ONLY other phones I'd consider would be the newest Asus Rog, Think Phone, and maybe the new Moto flip. They had some pretty top notch features and hardware as well, specifically Rog, which I almost did buy.

Apart from the US, basically nobody uses SMS or RCS anymore. WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Signal etc come to mind before even considering sending a SMS/RCS. This is probably because, (at least in my country) SMS messages are limited while WhatsApp and the others use Wi-Fi or Mobile Data, which are basically unlimited. The only time I personally use RCS is when I receive automatic texts from companies or when I can't connect to the internet.
@matj12

We use SMS when we can't decide which other messaging system to use. I suggest Signal, Telegram or RCS; others suggest Messenger or WhatsApp. It is good as a common basis. BTW, RCS does not work without internet connection. So you almost certainly don't get RCS messages when you can't connect to the internet. You probably get SMS messages then.

My friends who are on android had to upgrade their phones already 2x due to too few apps being supported etc. Generally I still think Apple creates good bang for the buck. Of course if someone has enough money they will buy the best experience even if it is getting the newest one every year. Generally most people have more and more excess money and people are willing to spend more. If everyone would only buy the bare minimun we would not have many products that exist today:)

because a new chat app comes out every five minutes. one day its aol, then the next day everyone switches to yahoo. then it's google, then now everyone has blackberrys and they are using blackberry messenger, then its facebook, then everyone just gave up and everyone has "generic text messaging" on their phone as a default anyway let's just use that. The USA is not "A" place. it is a microcosm of dozens of local cultures that work independently and it is not likely that the entirety of the population will agree on a communication app. And then if they did ... IS that communication a monopoly? What kind of Walled garden would that communication app put up such as hailing a taxi , or ordering food, or paying your bills ... I'm not a lawyer maybe Apple is a monopoly ... maybe they are not one this is a lawsuit that will take years to resolve. One thing that lawmakers can do today is put pressure on wireless carriers to make the default text messaging more robust, to essentially make Imessage redundant in the first place.

Also it's important to point out that Android watches work with ANY android device, so the argument is really not the same as the Apple Watch. This means there's not just 1 company holding the monopoly over the ecosystem - anyone can be a part of it. There's various brands of watches and switching between those is seamless and non-restrictive. Apple is the one that doesn't like open source and wants to block compatibility.

The other thing about iPhones that's so weird to me is something I feel like no one ever mentions: most iPhone users seem to upgrade their phone every year. There are plenty of Android users that do too, but it seems more prevalent with iPhones. People think that if they don't have the latest iPhone they'll be called poor. What's SO weird to me as a non-American teen is the almost cult-like following Apple has amongst people my age in the US. Is it that their parents "just buy them an iPhone", like Cook said? Is it that the teens refuse to use any other phone apart from an iPhone? Why?? Why the over-reliance on iMessage? What's stopping people from going to the App Store and downloading a free app so that they can talk to their friends? I can't imagine just...refusing to speak to someone just because they have something different from me. Why is this so common in the US and almost non-existent everywhere else? Idk man. In regards to the messaging app thing, having seen this in school, it is genuinely a case of most people being too lazy/uninterested to even consider using an app that isnt built in. Mid 20s EU-Citizen here. It really is weird. I use an iPhone for various reasons (mainly smart home stuff) but I’m pretty open for other devices as well and might switch when matter finally takes of. And here it’s fine. I’m mostly using Signal and Discord for my communication. Half of my friends have Android phones and we’re all good. Basically everyone I spoke to in my life so far does not care about the phone. It’s the simple question of: WhatsApp, or Discord? Of course I met people that say the moment I get my phone out: „Eww you’re using an iPhone? What’s wrong with you, everyone knows iPhones suck“ to what I respond: „Why do you care about my choice of phone?! And when it’s so bad why would I care to use one?!“ That shuts up most people. I also experienced the other way around when I was using an Android phone. It’s just stupid. Let people use what they like and move on. I seriously don’t get why people get so upset over a friends choice of phone. We all have our preferences and needs and buy devices that fit these needs. And when my application requires an iPhone to work properly, I’m gonna use an iPhone.

90% of teens having an iphone is a crazy statistic. I will say, I've watched my younger siblings deal with bullying due to the fact they had android phones (getting left out of group chats for team sports, being ignored by friends, etc), and I've also dealt with friction in my professional life due to having an android phone. Apple has some neat features, but I definitely don't like the idea of being so heavily bought into an ecosystem like that.

iPhone started in the US and had a deal with AT&T, creating a nice lock-in for Apple. Over time a lot of users got used to using Messages and the rest of the ecosystem. In the meantime in Europe WhatsApp became very popular and cellular companies were pushing a lot of different brands of phones.

One thing to mention: Apple products can get crazy expensive in some countries, like Brazil, and we are a big market. And it's wild: In the US, both the base Galaxy S23 and the base iPhone 15 came with a $799 price tag. Here the the S23 costs around HALF the iPhone 15 price. Or the fact that here I can buy 3 Galaxy Buds for the price of just 1 Airpods. It literally is a luxury company for us. So here, Apple is much more a status symbol than anything else. I still see the iPhone 6, 7, 8 commonly around here, 'cause the newer ones are so expensive that people simply can't buy, but people will not give up on the status of having an Apple product. And Apple goes miles here to sustain that position: the first official Apple Store that opened in Brazil, opened in the most luxurious mall in Rio, next to the most luxurious fashion brands. It's insane.

Back when I first started using Samsung, this was true in the US too. The Galaxy lineup had features and specs that the iPhone wouldn't have for another 2 or 3 years and was still roughly half the price of the iPhone. Today, the prices are pretty much the same. Samsung still generally has better specs, but the prices have caught up as it became known as pretty much being the top of the line Android in the US.

True for Brazil, but that's mainly cause Brazil is not the higher priority market for Apple, if you go to Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, China, Korea etc, Samsung and Apple cost roughly the same, in most cases the iPhone 15 Pro Max costs less than the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. This is cause these markets are extremely competitive, therefore Apple has to compete, while in less demanding markets they don't have to bother with pricing since almost nobody really buys their products.

But we're gonna make it sooo hard for u to try anything else so that u can compare if it's still the best..." Also, just for info sake, even comparing the power of an android chip, and an iPhone chip is becoming sooooo difficult that Test companies like Geekbench are admitting that their score now won't even be accurate because apple doesn't allow their tests to be run for a fair comparison... It's really good that they made the best phone, the best ipods, the best watch, the best everything... But if it IS the best, then let us see for ourselves right??? Imagine Bugatti or Rolls Royce making u sign a contract demanding a special license that only let's u drive their cars and disallows u from driving anything else... Last point I could make, is that suppose a guy only wants the best camera setup as his smartphone... He would go for the Sony... (Imagine he REALLY wants the DSLR integration feature, and wants to connect his Camera and Phone as one) But he also wants a good watch... But can't use the Apple watch... Also he needs some good buds... But can't use the IPods... (I mean he technically can, but if the features that make these gadgets THE BEST aren't available to him anymore, then what's the point??) Also his phone wont seamlessly integrate with his laptop (it by default is a Macbook as it has the best battery to performance right now) So he can't also use half of the features of his Macbook just because he doesn't have an IPhone... I really hope u see some clarity here...

I was thinking that too, but maybe the term can be used in a few different ways. I suppose in the case of the earbuds for example they're vertically integrated in that they only work with each other. @GarryDeWitt You are correct, his examples of vertical integration are 100% wrong. What he is describing is a proprietary product ecosystem. Exactly, also means that they have control over their software and hardware so that it works efficiently. The main issue is clearly malicious business practices. Limiting the ability of consumers to choose other options, in addition to the deliberate prevention of integration options for other developers and product companies is simply unethical and now seems to borderline legality too. It's the same reason why Apple are able to mark up their prices so ridiculously, because they limit your options as a consumer and force your hand, and I'll admit although their products are generally good, others would be able to make products just as good, if not better when given no restrictions.

Also the Android update game is picking up at a great pace. And the price bracket where people are buying those iPhones, most Android companies give 2-3 yrs of update & most of them switch their device after 3-4 years, not much of a difference. What continually is left out of this narrative is that the "messages" app was normal texting when the iPhone launched, and until iOS 5. At that point they hijacked normal texting (which by and large had become unlimited at that point) and layered on iMessage basically without consent. Many people weren't even aware this had occurred. I've heard from multiple people who'd switch from iOS to Android, where messages to the person who switched would never be delivered. Causing the switcher to unknowingly ghost their Apple friends. This was a very real problem that eventually they remedied, but it speaks to how the public at large wasn't even fully aware of the switchover.

I was going to the comments to point this out, but you described it perfectly. The problem really is the default messaging system we rely on was placed as a 2nd priority to iMessage and it grew into what it is today. While you can deregister your phone number from iMessage (which requires you to know this), it doesn't allow users to turn off iMessages entirely. I've personally experienced converting from iPhone to Android and not being able to message previous groups properly with what was once iMessage-only groups. I can send texts that are received by others, which they see as SMS/MMS, but I can't receive from any of the groups. Messages sent from the group are still only for iMessage receivers and I get completely left out. Only remedy I've found to this is for every iMessage user in that group to delete the thread so it can recreate as non-iMessage, which is awful. Compound that with any iMessage group I was once a part of and all those users have to delete the threads too. I've just decided its best to not even bug everyone and ask them to individually message me. There should have been an option for group messaging to turn off iMessage from the beginning.

@@Zalian You’re right. The wiki page reads as if users couldn’t install other browsers, which would definitely fall within antitrust laws. I was just a few years old then, so I don’t remember if that was the case. Another issue I could see is if manufacturers wanted to install other browsers, but MS was prohibiting them from doing so, but even that could open a can worms. In that case, Apple isn’t comparable because they’re their sole manufacturer.

@jhpjhun
@jhpjhun 8 ай бұрын
Pretty simple. Imagine Europe. Now imagine all of the European countries fall under the same country code. Why in the world would I need to use a 3rd party app that spies on me to communicate to close people? Americans never needed a 3rd party app to communicate to each other in the first place so the eco system didn't catch on as much as Europe. And Apple made it so that their users didn't have to necessarily install those apps. After 15+ years of not improving their text function, Android finally implemented a similar system to Apple and is now crying foul that it's not compatible. GTFO.

They had to get a Windows laptop out of their locked tech cabinet to do the post/upload. It's more akin to if Microsoft limited the DPI or input latency on my mouse because I didn't buy the stupid bendy mouse that they make. If I wanted, I could even turn off the fingerprint authorization and swap it to a PIN, but still wouldn't be required to launch the banks app.

This statement just doesn't make sense to me for a lot of reason. First of I don't trust any other institution to keep all of my financial data and transactions safe. there's no better privacy than the fact that all that it's all stored and processed on device, no other party sees that info including Apple(The credit/debit card issuing bank always see what you use the card for of course but that's it)

third I don't see a world where all financial institutions play nice with each other, like I don't imagine for instance Chase having a wallet and allowing you to add you Amex's/Discovers/Capital One's cards etc. and idk about you but till be so frustrating going having to go to the individual apps to use cards in the wallet of that app, there literally no better thing than having it all in one place. there's a reason that even on androids more open ecosystem there aren't really any other wallets after Google & Samsung Pay.

The Pixel watch works great on every android phone: you dont have to choose a Pixel. Thats the key difference. Someone can use a Pixel Watch 2, LG earbuds, a samsung galaxy tablet, and a Sony phone. You're not stuck in one company's ecosystem. The choice to only support android comes down to OS access: smartwatched in the past DID try supporting iPhones, but the limited OS access Apple gives 'outsiders' made those devices pretty useless.

Microsoft was sued 25 years ago for the same reason. The DOJ lawsuit against Microsoft helped apple. It is the reason Apple is where it's at. The DOJ lawsuit against Microsoft forced Microsoft to allow iTunes on windows. ITunes gave Apple money to start ipod. Ipod gave apple money to start iPhone.
@barsei1511
@barsei1511 8 ай бұрын
you didnt lived at that time. the lawsuit wasnt because of apple. it was because of Netscape Browser! Yes, Microsoft competed with Netscape that had a market share of 90% or more. so they build in the Internet Explorer. At the time, Microsoft had should be splitted in multiple companies. So they have done anything to not look like a Monopoly. they gave Apple money to survive, if they wouldnt, microsoft would have with Windows a 100% market share. Apple allowed Microsoft to sell MS Office and the standard Internet Browser was the Explorer. iTunes came to Windows because the iPod was that crazy popular. Apple sold much much more iPods then Mac's.

exactly. There were probably 10x more windows users than mac so all those non apple users bought the ipod to listen to music. So Apple should be thankful. without itunes on windows, the ipod sales would have been bad. ( I am one of those. I have owned 2 ipods)

What’s crazy… the fact I literally had the Samsung S24 Ultra for a week and returned it to get my iPhone 13 back. All. Because. Of. iMessage. Everyone within my immediate circle, family AND friends have iPhone. EVERYONE. I had the Apple Watch, TV, iPad, MacBook, but the moment I switch the sheer inconvenience of switching for myself and those that interact around was to hard. Had to switch back. Speaking from a brazilian perspective, it’s a pretty simple answer for “why apple doesn’t have higher market share”: Price. Most people here would choose an iPhone if they could, but is so unbelievably expensive for brazilian standards that most of them can’t afford it. For reference, the iPhone 15 Pro costs here R$ 9.2k, which is equivalent to barely 7x of our minimum wage. There’s some jokes about how is cheapier flying to Miami and buying there than buying here. Obviously we don’t know how it would be if it was cheaper, but I’d certainly say that the MS would be much higher and probably dominant here too.
@alcrian8627
@alcrian8627 8 ай бұрын
I completely disagree. We have similar cases for Samsung, which costs around the same as an iPhone (10k for S24U). Heck, I paid 13k for my Fold. The thing is: stupid people like to brag about their expensive stuff, specially Brazilians. And even though these phones are expensive, Apple's market share is still way smaller than other companies.
@Rukkaasu
@Rukkaasu 8 ай бұрын
@@alcrian8627Thats not entirely accurate. Yes, samsung and other flagship phones can be just as expensive, however you are not considering that outside Apple, most of the other brands have cheaper options, and those are extremely popular in Brazil. Apple doesn’t, unless you consider buying an used phone from somebody else as an option. The way that Apple portfolio works here doesn’t give brazilian customers cheaper options, if you take a look on the cheaper iphone currently on apple store is the iPhone SE for R$ 4.2k, which is also very expensive phone for most people here. And as I said, yes, we can’t tell for sure that if the prices were more affordable that would mean MS dominance, however, if we look at the market share for those in Brazil that CAN buy an iPhone, it’s pretty safe to bet that we would see the same behaviour in a larger scale.

Here in my country Indonesia, we don't use iMessage. Instead, we use WhatsApp. But since now WhatsApp is a necessary app for messaging, it creates some sort of wall too where if you want to message someone, you must have WhatsApp. Almost all institutions in this country have a WhatsApp contact (hospital, government, school, etc.), and most of the time it's the primary contact. "Don't they have a telephone line?" Well, sadly, no. Almost all telephone lines has been phased out in favor of WhatsApp. Or those still exist but people barely use it.

Just to add a couple of things to the China example that weren't mentioned in the video because of its intended scope; as someone who's lived in China for 17+ years: 1. If you've paid any attention to the news within the past 5 years or so, the media always brings up the various stipulations of moving into the massive, alluring Chinese market; most notable of which is requiring foreign companies to pick and choose at least one Chinese company to partner and SHARE TECH AND INFORMATION with. This has always been true and can be very prohibitive to many companies that have reservations about sharing their patented technologies and/or processes. 2. This ties into the above point, but once tech is shared with a Chinese company and/or new upcoming tech is revealed to the worldwide web, especially in the smartphone industry, it tends to spread like wildfire across the Chinese side of the industry and takes very little time doing so. When iPhone X was first unveiled, it took at most 2 days and less than a week for EVERY SINGLE Chinese smartphone company to debut their Android, iPhone-look-alike smartphones with very similar capabilities. Marques is absolutely correct when he says that super-apps like Wechat are what make choice of phone OS ecosystems and brands trival in markets like China, but such trivialities can also result from other factors that we should all at the very least be aware of.

I recently swapped out my mac with a gaming PC and switched my iPhone for a Z flip 5. This got me to also sell my apple watch. I have to admit that as someone that grew up pretty poor in the US, I have always thought of any phone >$400 (including the iPhone) as a "rich person phone". We always got the cheapest ones we could possibly find. It's kind of crazy to me that the majority of the US is spending so much money on their phones-I'm not judging, just seriously surprised.

And they don't even buy it for the features they provide for those higher prices. Even if they do know about those 'features', they almost never use it.
