Apart from the US, basically nobody uses SMS or RCS anymore. WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Signal etc come to mind before even considering sending a SMS/RCS. This is probably because, (at least in my country) SMS messages are limited while WhatsApp and the others use Wi-Fi or Mobile Data, which are basically unlimited. The only time I personally use RCS is when I receive automatic texts from companies or when I can't connect to the internet.

The USA is not "A" place. it is a microcosm of dozens of local cultures that work independently and it is not likely that the entirety of the population will agree on a communication app. And then if they did ... IS that communication a monopoly? What kind of Walled garden would that communication app put up such as hailing a taxi , or ordering food, or paying your bills ... I'm not a lawyer maybe Apple is a monopoly ... maybe they are not one this is a lawsuit that will take years to resolve. One thing that lawmakers can do today is put pressure on wireless carriers to make the default text messaging more robust, to essentially make Imessage redundant in the first place.

Is it that the teens refuse to use any other phone apart from an iPhone? Why?? Why the over-reliance on iMessage? What's stopping people from going to the App Store and downloading a free app so that they can talk to their friends? And here it’s fine. I’m mostly using Signal and Discord for my communication. Half of my friends have Android phones and we’re all good. Basically everyone I spoke to in my life so far does not care about the phone. It’s the simple question of: WhatsApp, or Discord? Of course I met people that say the moment I get my phone out: „Eww you’re using an iPhone? What’s wrong with you, everyone knows iPhones suck“ to what I respond: „Why do you care about my choice of phone?! And when it’s so bad why would I care to use one?!“ That shuts up most people. I also experienced the other way around when I was using an Android phone. It’s just stupid. Let people use what they like and move on. I seriously don’t get why people get so upset over a friends choice of phone. We all have our preferences and needs and buy devices that fit these needs. One thing to mention: Apple products can get crazy expensive in some countries, like Brazil, and we are a big market. And it's wild: In the US, both the base Galaxy S23 and the base iPhone 15 came with a $799 price tag. Here the the S23 costs around HALF the iPhone 15 price. Or the fact that here I can buy 3 Galaxy Buds for the price of just 1 Airpods. It literally is a luxury company for us. So here, Apple is much more a status symbol than anything else. I still see the iPhone 6, 7, 8 commonly around here, 'cause the newer ones are so expensive that people simply can't buy, but people will not give up on the status of having an Apple product. And Apple goes miles here to sustain that position: the first official Apple Store that opened in Brazil, opened in the most luxurious mall in Rio, next to the most luxurious fashion brands. It's insane.

I then knew it was a no go and shifted to iPhone. They could not break out of the ecosystem.

@@ahmetemreboyaci what's wrong, is that if a company makes something sooo good and sooo innovative, then they should have the confidence to say like "hey, check this out, isn't this cool, feel free to check out everything else, but eventually, ur gonna come back to use cuz we're the best" But instead the company goes, "hey we got this new thing, that no one ever has made, check it out... But we're gonna make it sooo hard for u to try anything else so that u can compare if it's still the best..." Also, just for info sake, even comparing the power of an android chip, and an iPhone chip is becoming sooooo difficult that Test companies like Geekbench are admitting that their score now won't even be accurate because apple doesn't allow their tests to be run for a fair comparison... It's really good that they made the best phone, the best ipods, the best watch, the best everything... But if it IS the best, then let us see for ourselves right??? Imagine Bugatti or Rolls Royce making u sign a contract demanding a special license that only let's u drive their cars and disallows u from driving anything else... Last point I could make, is that suppose a guy only wants the best camera setup as his smartphone... He would go for the Sony... (Imagine he REALLY wants the DSLR integration feature, and wants to connect his Camera and Phone as one) But he also wants a good watch... But can't use the Apple watch... Also he needs some good buds... But can't use the IPods... (I mean he technically can, but if the features that make these gadgets THE BEST aren't available to him anymore, then what's the point??) Also his phone wont seamlessly integrate with his laptop (it by default is a Macbook as it has the best battery to performance right now) So he can't also use half of the features of his Macbook just because he doesn't have an IPhone... I really hope u see some clarity here...

Same thought here
@drachna8 ай бұрын
I was thinking that too, but maybe the term can be used in a few different ways. I suppose in the case of the earbuds for example they're vertically integrated in that they only work with each other. If they were horizontally integrated the company could buy generic tips to pair with the earbuds, but since they've designed them to be unique they're the only people who can legally make them.
@RiqMoran8 ай бұрын
Yeah this guy just doesnt know what vertical integration is
@Texas_19858 ай бұрын
@GarryDeWitt You are correct, his examples of vertical integration are 100% wrong. What he is describing is a proprietary product ecosystem. Vertical integration would involve you taking control of different stages of the production or distribution processes within the industry. For example, if you made a camera lens, and also owned the glass company that manufactured the glass for your lenses.
@abdoeldaly69228 ай бұрын
Exactly, also means that they have control over their software and hardware so that it works efficiently. In this case apple has vertical integration yes, but that's not the problem, vertical integration is just a feature, something they have that they use to lock people in the ecosystem, so it becomes hard for them to leave the iPhone.
@KeelanJon8 ай бұрын
The main issue is clearly malicious business practices. Limiting the ability of consumers to choose other options, in addition to the deliberate prevention of integration options for other developers and product companies is simply unethical and now seems to borderline legality too. It's the same reason why Apple are able to mark up their prices so ridiculously, because they limit your options as a consumer and force your hand, and I'll admit although their products are generally good, others would be able to make products just as good, if not better when given no restrictions.

Also the Android update game is picking up at a great pace. And the price bracket where people are buying those iPhones, most Android companies give 2-3 yrs of update & most of them switch their device after 3-4 years, not much of a difference. What continually is left out of this narrative is that the "messages" app was normal texting when the iPhone launched, and until iOS 5. At that point they hijacked normal texting (which by and large had become unlimited at that point) and layered on iMessage basically without consent. Many people weren't even aware this had occurred. I've heard from multiple people who'd switch from iOS to Android, where messages to the person who switched would never be delivered. Causing the switcher to unknowingly ghost their Apple friends. This was a very real problem that eventually they remedied, but it speaks to how the public at large wasn't even fully aware of the switchover.

I was going to the comments to point this out, but you described it perfectly. The problem really is the default messaging system we rely on was placed as a 2nd priority to iMessage and it grew into what it is today. While you can deregister your phone number from iMessage (which requires you to know this), it doesn't allow users to turn off iMessages entirely. I've personally experienced converting from iPhone to Android and not being able to message previous groups properly with what was once iMessage-only groups. I can send texts that are received by others, which they see as SMS/MMS, but I can't receive from any of the groups. Messages sent from the group are still only for iMessage receivers and I get completely left out. Only remedy I've found to this is for every iMessage user in that group to delete the thread so it can recreate as non-iMessage, which is awful. Compound that with any iMessage group I was once a part of and all those users have to delete the threads too. I've just decided its best to not even bug everyone and ask them to individually message me. There should have been an option for group messaging to turn off iMessage from the beginning.

I had edited a 4K video using my Windows 11 Pro for Workstations gaming laptop, which has a NVIDIA Geforce RTX 4060 GPU, and the final cut was in MP4 format because everything there needs to be as accessible as possible (a.k.a. no proprietary formats) and when one of them tried to download it to their iPhone from Google Drive to upload to Facebook and KZbin, iOS was blocking the download. They had to get a Windows laptop out of their locked tech cabinet to do the post/upload. Also, one of the staff tried to Facetime a client that had a Samsung Galaxy A15 smartphone and she got pissed when it didn't work and I was able to video call them no problem using Google Meet. There's plenty of smartwatch options out there that "work" with iPhone, but are limited in capability purely due to the fact that it's paired to an iPhone, and that's not by the smartwatch manufacturers choice. It's more akin to if Microsoft limited the DPI or input latency on my mouse because I didn't buy the stupid bendy mouse that they make. With horizontal integration, a company starts producing new items which are at the same level of the value chain of the ones it already produces; meanwhile, vertical integration is the process by which a company incorporates part of the supply chain. Speaking from a brazilian perspective, it’s a pretty simple answer for “why apple doesn’t have higher market share”: Price. Most people here would choose an iPhone if they could, but is so unbelievably expensive for brazilian standards that most of them can’t afford it. For reference, the iPhone 15 Pro costs here R$ 9.2k, which is equivalent to barely 7x of our minimum wage. There’s some jokes about how is cheapier flying to Miami and buying there than buying here. Obviously we don’t know how it would be if it was cheaper, but I’d certainly say that the MS would be much higher and probably dominant here too.
@alcrian86278 ай бұрын
I completely disagree. We have similar cases for Samsung, which costs around the same as an iPhone (10k for S24U). Heck, I paid 13k for my Fold. The thing is: stupid people like to brag about their expensive stuff, specially Brazilians. And even though these phones are expensive, Apple's market share is still way smaller than other companies.
@Rukkaasu8 ай бұрын
@@alcrian8627Thats not entirely accurate. Yes, samsung and other flagship phones can be just as expensive, however you are not considering that outside Apple, most of the other brands have cheaper options, and those are extremely popular in Brazil. Apple doesn’t, unless you consider buying an used phone from somebody else as an option. The way that Apple portfolio works here doesn’t give brazilian customers cheaper options, if you take a look on the cheaper iphone currently on apple store is the iPhone SE for R$ 4.2k, which is also very expensive phone for most people here. And as I said, yes, we can’t tell for sure that if the prices were more affordable that would mean MS dominance, however, if we look at the market share for those in Brazil that CAN buy an iPhone, it’s pretty safe to bet that we would see the same behaviour in a larger scale.

Just to add a couple of things to the China example that weren't mentioned in the video because of its intended scope; as someone who's lived in China for 17+ years: 1. If you've paid any attention to the news within the past 5 years or so, the media always brings up the various stipulations of moving into the massive, alluring Chinese market; most notable of which is requiring foreign companies to pick and choose at least one Chinese company to partner and SHARE TECH AND INFORMATION with. This has always been true and can be very prohibitive to many companies that have reservations about sharing their patented technologies and/or processes. 2. This ties into the above point, but once tech is shared with a Chinese company and/or new upcoming tech is revealed to the worldwide web, especially in the smartphone industry, it tends to spread like wildfire across the Chinese side of the industry and takes very little time doing so. When iPhone X was first unveiled, it took at most 2 days and less than a week for EVERY SINGLE Chinese smartphone company to debut their Android, iPhone-look-alike smartphones with very similar capabilities. Marques is absolutely correct when he says that super-apps like Wechat are what make choice of phone OS ecosystems and brands trival in markets like China, but such trivialities can also result from other factors that we should all at the very least be aware of.

It's so weird, what's the problem with just opening the app store and downloading it?

Exactly. As European I use default message app on Android and before iOS almost exclusively for 2fa. Almost nobody writes now other way than whatsapp, messenger mostly for older generation and I think telegram in Ukraine and Russia (but last one is not Europe tbh).

I have to admit that as someone that grew up pretty poor in the US, I have always thought of any phone >$400 (including the iPhone) as a "rich person phone". We always got the cheapest ones we could possibly find. It's kind of crazy to me that the majority of the US is spending so much money on their phones-I'm not judging, just seriously surprised.

And they don't even buy it for the features they provide for those higher prices. Even if they do know about those 'features', they almost never use it. I am from India, and my phone (which would cost about $200) is more than sufficient. $400-$500 will always be the upper limit since above that you get diminishing results.

It also bears mentioning that once you're in the iOS App Store ecosystem, you can't migrate out of it to any other kind of phone without losing access and having to repurchase premium apps that you rely on for daily use.
