This week we'll finally start the trip back to Florida that I've been talking about. But first, I need to get back to George Town to pick up Aaron, a friend who also has some items that he needs to pick up. One the 50 mile passage back to George Town, I land my first ever mahi mahi. What an insanely beautiful fish it is! To top it off, the winds were so good that I now have a new fastest speed on Maritopia. Once back in George Town, Aaron comes aboard and we almost immediately weigh anchor. But after having solid winds for the remainder of the first day, we're forced to run the pesky engine for more than 24 hours straight. The only saving grace was catching another mahi, this one being much bigger than the first. And then the fish basically start jumping into the boat. The lines were so busy that it took my mind off of the noisy engine.

I'm at 10,100 ft, Grand Mesa Colorado catching trout and watching Mule deer out the front window while watching you at 0 ft in the Bahamas catching Mahi sailing the blue seas. Both of us are totally amazed at where life has taken us. I randomly burst out laughing at the beautiful places I find myself. Life is good and life is what you make of it.

Grand Mesa is so beautiful! And considerably cooler than it is here right now. There are times where I miss living in Colorado. But you’re absolutely right; life is what we make it. You can complain about it, or you can LIVE it! Looks like we’ve both chosen to thoroughly live ours.

I think it took me about 45 minutes to get that untangled. I was just so excited to finally get an edible fish on board. With as hot and humid as it is in the tropics now, I’m definitely sweating salt. lol. As always, thank you so much for watching!

That was such a tough trip back to Florida. I nor the friend, Aaron, wanted to be doing that passage. But we knew we had no choice. The mahi was so delicious, though! There’s just something about eating never frozen fish that you caught yourself. It just tastes better.

It took about 45 minutes. On passage, I have nothing better to do. lol. But I’ve gotta make sure I pay attention to how I bring the line in with future fish. I was so excited catching my very first mahi that I wasn’t even paying attention to the line.

That mahi was so dang good! I ended up giving a pretty decent amount of it away to friends who weren’t as fortunate. I’ve got one piece left in the freezer. I’ve got it positioned so that I see it every time I open the freezer, as a reminder of what a phenomenal 5 months of memories the Bahamas provided me.

Just try to think of how far you've come from when you started sailing ! You've done very well. I know I've asked before and, eventually, it will be revealed.......I was wondering where you will stick it out during hurricane season. Thank you for the video work, the editing and for sharing your adventure !

I was just thinking about that a few days ago. When I first left Florida, I was worried about seas over 2’. Now it takes about 7 to 8 ft before I get concerned. It’s been a phenomenal 5 months in the Bahamas! I’m already in the Dominican Republic, which is where I’ll stay for hurricane season. I’m hoping to get a bunch of boat work done, including finishing the cosmetics on the deck. But it’s considerably hotter and far more humid than I was anticipating. Everyone moves at a much slower pace. In fact, basically no work gets done outside of 7 to 11 in the mornings.

The toothy fish you caught is a Houndfish. The largest of the needle fish. Not much use for them but a fun tug on the line. Keep having fun.
@AmysSoloSailingAdventures

Thank you for that! Just googled it. I had no idea that they like jumping, and have impaled a fair number of people. Until that day, I’d only seen the tiny ones that are about a ft or so long. And to think the houndfish grows up to 5’ and 10lbs.

America. I sure don’t miss the traffic, traffic jams, everything & everyone being in a hurry, or everyone out for nothing but money. I sure do miss my family, but they’ll always have great foreign places to visit as long as I’m out sailing. Oooh, I take that back. With as hot and humid as it is in the tropics, I could go for a week in the Rocky Mountains right about now.

Yeah, I watched Aaron filet the one we caught together. The way he cleaned it was much better than how I did the first one. That fish was so dang good! There’s something about never frozen fish that you can yourself. It just tastes better. I actually like using the yoyo, because it’s so simple. But have to pay better attention in the future, when I’m feeling a fish in. Thank you for watching! I’m happy you’re enjoying the videos!

@@AmysSoloSailingAdventures I always found filleting difficult and wasteful of good meat. So for a larger Mai Mai or tuna, I usually scale, gut and then cut out steaks

Ah the drone of a diesel, on a sailboat the absence of such racket brings not panic but relief. Bet that express sail was nice having two hands to keep it moving. Have a question, for the cruising permit that you need to sail the islands and the limit as you redid yours in a previous episode. I just realized in your dash back and forth, wouldn't clearing out and leaving for 2 weeks reset the clock or did the Bahama government get wise to that tactic?
@AmysSoloSailingAdventures

Having another set of hands was amazing for that quick trip! It was weird being able to get uninhibited sleep while underway. But insanely nice! That’s one of the best treats on Maritopia, being able to shut that darn noise maker off. I don’t remember exactly now, but I asked the immigration officers in George Town about it. When you have a year long cruising permit, you’re allowed to leave and come back, so long as you come back within 90 days. It was actually pretty convenient.

I’m still new to the ocean, so learning as I go. And that was a tough lesson. Took me about 45 minutes to re-spool the line. I was so excited that I snagged a fish that I got tunnel vision and only cared about getting it on the boat. I’d been trolling the Bahamas for 5 months, and had only caught a barracuda up until this point.
