In this weeks episode, we'll explore New Bight, Cat Island. From wild goats, to wild chickens. From the smallest monastery I've ever seen, to the largest palm trees I've ever seen. With the endless ruins to explore, there's no doubt in my mind that this is my favorite of all the Bahamian islands I've explored.
The monastery is called the Hermitage. While it's actually not too old, being built in 1939, it was not only made to look ancient, but it was also built at 3/4 scale. Everything about it was mind-blowing.
After the Hermitage, we'll explore the ruins of the 2nd oldest still standing structure in the entirety of the Bahamas - an old plantation that was built in the 1700s, prior to the abolition of slavery.
Cat Island is a MUST SEE is you're ever in the Bahamas.

Wow, I compare you to your first videos. Your skin looks much healthier and your body shape has improved significantly. You also look more relaxed. Sailing and the journey are good for you. Have fun on your journey. A greeting from Germany.

Good call on getting the safety equipment. I have seen sailors waffle on stuff like that until its to late and things got bad on the boat. I look forward to seeing how fast you made there and back! It's all an adventure!

I didn’t want to be making longer passages without those items. It’s just not smart. The only thing I’m lacking at this point is a life raft. I’ll get that when I’m in Puerto Rico, since there’s no import fees. Since making that insanely fast passage to FL & back, I’ve wondered if it’s the fastest it’s ever been done on a sailing vessel. After all, most people wouldn’t be dumb enough to do it. lol.

Great episode! Thanks for sharing yr Cat island tour. Cool plantation site just remember the souls that toiled under brutal slave conditions and their ancestors that are the current Bahamians. Ya they burned it down!! Alot of history everywhere U visit. Cheers!

Thank you for watching. I’m happy you enjoyed it. I’ve always been a lover of history, so this island in particular really struck a cord with me. For the plantation house in particular, I actually sat down in what was the front yard and thought about it for a solid hour. How at its height, the slaves were forced to do all the manual labor. And how they must’ve been beat and tortured. BUT, how the slaves persevered and made it through, while the house continues to crumble apart with passing time.

Fun to see your trip to Cat island - I spent years there and it’s a special place for sure. There are some pigs that have gone wild, but I’m pretty sure all the goats there are spoken for - not wild. (Of course they are supposed to be contained, but that doesn’t often happen in practice. 😂)

Ah! After as playful as the goats were with me, I was guessing they couldn’t be wild. I didn’t see any pigs though. I love Cat Island! It’s the one single Bahamian island that I’ll purposely go out of the way to visit again one day.

Amy that was great, I just love goats, they have the best personalities. The castle and ruins were very interesting thanks for that, I did a search on Henry Armbrister, found some stuff but only 1 picture of the building, still in ruins but not as bad as it is now. Glad u got the parts too. Ur videos are getting really good, love the history. U also look happy and well. Stay safe my friend, have fun.🇦🇺💞🐉just check the engines lower unit oil and just sit it up for awhile before u start it.

The goats were so much fun to watch! It was pretty neat that they followed me up to the top of the hill. I tried find a picture, even if it was black & white, that I could add to the video. But I didn’t have any luck either. Thank you for that, I’m happy it’s showing through. For me anyway, it’s been a rather steep learning curve figuring out how to put them together.

Great episode, Amy. Make sure when you pull that engine out of the lazerett that you check the carbs, lower unit, etc, due to the fact you stored it on it on its side. BTW, friends can bring in parts without customs tax or any import tariffs. You can also Fedex parts without special charges as long as you can prove you are a cruiser and the parts are direct use for your vessel.

Thank you! The only items that there are no extra fees for are those items that propel the boat. If the items have nothing to do with propulsion, then you pay the exorbitant fees. Yeah, I’ve had it in the lazarette for a few passages now. It’s got a decal on it that shows the proper way to store it on its side. But I still let it set upright for a bit before starting it.

Yes some require being stored on a particular side
@AmysSoloSailingAdventures
@AmysSoloSailingAdventures 2 ай бұрын
@@sartorst3376 it’s been good so far. Though I’m sure it’s because it’s brand new. Once the seals start aging a bit, there will no doubt be difficulties starting it after having been laying on its side.
