Making a Wheat pattern inlay had some challenges. This video covers the process and problems that "cropped" up along the way! I show you how to avoid those problems in any inlay, and how to fix them when they do happen.
This is another inlay destined for a decorative pizza peel.

Thanks! I’ve always been bothered by the “superhuman” videos that never admit mistakes and don’t show solutions to fix them. If someone else can learn from my mistakes, so much the better! Thanks for watching!

Impressive! I'm glad you chose to share how you fixed the mistake, it shows that even with a mess up it can still come out perfect. Makes me want to go digging through my "oops" pile.

Glad you were inspired! I’m all for showing my mistakes on video. Any Woodworker who claims to be perfect all the time is either a lier or not telling the truth. It’s how we deal with the mistakes that makes us better.

This started as a challenge from a pastor’s wife. Wheat is symbolic of souls.

if it goes all the way through... then it isn't really an inlay is it? It looks like you glued all the pieces together and then sanded it down, sort of like a 3 piece guitar top. Looks great though

That’s correct. It technically isn’t inlay. I could have sliced it super thin and made it go a lot farther, but I wanted the design to go all the way through so the edge would be correct.

I gave this pattern and the Zig Zag a go... Shot another video if interested. The frames haven't been final sanded.. or oiled yet kzbin.info/www/bejne/bp6kmGqve8t1d7c I had trouble on the zigZag initial glue up of all things.. only ended up being able to use about a quarter. And calling mine an arrow pattern but it's you wheat pattern.. The backside is off and it's exactly as you describe.. I wasn't square. And unrelated to banding 45's for frames haunt me. You'd think that would be one of the simplest task. But it's one of the hardest for me.. I've tried miter saws, hand saws, built 3 miter sleds.. Just any deviation apparently shows up .. Last time I figured out my table saw blade was at 89.6 degrees.. Even though I had set it 90 previously in the day with a digital angle finder.. My lesson, check it again before cutting frames. But thank you for these videos, they're heaven.. My two attempts at these patterns are 100% because of your postings and hopefully I will improve. Thanks.

Nice adaptations! Keep up the good work and creativity. On the mitered corners, I always use a hand plane and shooting board or “donkey ear” to get the corners spot on. Donkey ear shooting board kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpq6pWaKja-gqJY And a band saw jig - for first pass: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pamUhHeYbKuNgMk

@@SkyValleyStudio Thanks haven't watched that one yet. I don't even own a real hand plane.. Couple of cheapo block planes.. I had asked you before what you used and it's Veritas Low-Angle.. They're out of stock and say maybe May. I guess there is going to be a plane in my future.. I really wanted one to build you're plane skid.. looks as if I'll have to go with another brand plane.. But I really have zero experience with one..

@@SkyValleyStudio Yay me! I finally saved up for and just purchased a Veritas low angle jack plane. Based on your recommendation ; - ) .. Now have to wait for whenever it gets here. That and they just had them available again. So I want to mimc/copy/borrow/steal/download for evaluation purposes.. Your donkey ear, plane skid etc.. Maybe I can solve some of my long standing irksome issues.. e.g. frames and 45 degrees and consistency in the thickness of the different wood layers when constructing banding..
