Great video. So, the salt lowered the temperature, but stops the water freezing - I guess the the ice cubes will start melting even though the temperature is below zero (because of the salt and ambient temperature)? Where did the energy to lower the temperature come from?
@stepbystepscience3 жыл бұрын
You can think of it as the ice melts it absorbs energy from the environment (water) thereby lowering the temperature.

@@stepbystepscience No, it RELEASES energy from the ice water mixture TO the environment (air)

when something melts it absorbs energy. when something freezes it loses energy. the mixture is at a lower temperature than the air, thereby the energy (heat) transfers from the air to the mixture. Heat transfers from hotter to colder.@@DigitalOrbitRecords

We're using this for my college-level chemistry lab on a snow day haha. Great video.

I do not know why I understand the everything else except the applications especially the first one. How is the ice not getting formed since the temperature will be lower than zero degrees after adding the salt into water? I only get confused there, I hope you understand what I am trying to ask from you.

Essentially, the salt makes it harder for the water molecules to bond together in their rigid structure. I gets in the way of the ice forming into crystals. Sorry for the later response.
