What kind of substrate would you recommend to go bio active in a 5' x 28" x 50" with 1' of substrate? And how offten should i clean it? Its for a timor monitor

Kevin are you using leaves and moss gathered locally from here in southern NH? Since you mentioned a concern about parasites, do you sterilize anything by baking or bleaching before putting it into the enclosures?

Have a question about feeding grubs to a box turtle. They were found in a pile of decomposing leaves. The leaves were gotten at a recycle mulch place and have been decomposing at our place for probably a year and is looking more like dirt. We also found two hook worms in the decomposing leaves. We killed the hookworms but saved the grubs in a 5 gallon bucket with the same substrate they were found in. I've been giving these grubs to my box turtle. Is this risky since there was two hookworms in the composting leave pile? Should I change the substrate? Would appreciate your view on this as I surely don't want to harm my Sparky. You are so very right about substrate overwatering. I've done that and it's the very thing that will cause fungus gnats and smell. Great video and a thumbs up from me. Added note: Sparky has a 3ftx8ft terrarium and he has an ecosystem too with rolly pollies, sow bugs, tiny soil bugs and even tiny ants most likely brought in by bringing in leaves. I keep a top dressing of leaves too and like you say the leaves disappear and turn into soil.

Hookworms are specialized to infect humans and pose no danger to reptiles.

Bit late (like 7 months) but ants can get inside the shell and get stuck, resulting in them repeatedly biting/stinging the turtle.

Your kinda wrong about the nematodes. Most soil nematodes aren't parasites, just harmless detritivores. And the ones that infect humans or dogs can not infect lizards.

I have little spider type creatures living in my open air paludarium. I don't know what they are. But this morning in the cave I found a web in the corner. I live in Australia and worry about deadly spiders. I just hope these tiny spiders are not redbacks.
