Making Your Tools: The Value Scale

We begin at the beginning. Before we can start talking about the language of painting, we need to understand the vocabulary. The vocabulary of painting deals with color, and color is expressed in three dimensions: hue (the name of the color), value (the degree of lightness or darkness compared to black and white), and chroma (the intesity, or brightness or dullness). Of the three, we start with value. Value is the primary dimension used to create the illusion of form on a flat surface. As you will soon see in subsequent videos, creating a visible and portable scale of values is a helpful tool to assist you in your painting process.
Materials needed:
-paint - Titanium White, Ivory Black, Raw Umber
-palette - glass, paper, or wood
-palette knife
- (2) wooden paint sticks coated with acrylic paint or gesso
-paper towels
-Gamblin Neomegilp or Winsor&Newton Liquin
-Gamsol

Thank you Neilson for the thorough and informative video. I'm curious why Raw Umber is preferred over Burnt Umber to make a universal darkener? I believe Raw Umber is a low-chroma, low-value yellow, and Burnt Umber is a low-chroma, low-value orange. I see that yellow is opposite purple-blue (Ivory Black) on the Munsell wheel but my thinking is that a painter's color wheel places orange opposite of blue perhaps making a more successful neutral.

Burnt umber can be used, but it is usually has a slightly greater tinting strength than Raw Umber. Consequently, you have to reformulate the combination or the Burnt Umber will dominate. I think something like 4 parts black: 1 part Burnt Umber will work, but it can differ depending on the paint brand.

@@NeilsonCarlin Ahh makes sense! I tried Using Burnt Umber with Ivory Black, makes complete sense in my mind logically; blue opposite to orange but after mixing when you thin the pile of paint there is still a brownish trail. Will do the 4/3 parts black to Burnt Umber! Thanks

That was great, thank you! Do you have any recipes for amount of paint to buy and mix when tubing the greys to make one complete set?
@NeilsonCarlin
@NeilsonCarlin 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Daniel! Sadly, I do not. I haven't tubed a full string of paint in years. Also, it depends on the size of your empty tubes. Regardless of the tube size, I would suggest just starting with an 8/6/4/2 value chord.

@@NeilsonCarlin makes sense. The formula for black/umber is gold! I’m happy!

@@TheDaniel71234 And maybe that's a starting point if you intend to mix a lot of paint. Get two 37ml tubes of Ivory Black and one 37ml tube of Raw Umber. Mix them all together and tube them. You at least have the neutral black prepared. You can then start buying tubes of Titanium and tube as you go. You know you'll need at least one full tube for the 8v (if you go with the chord idea), most of a 37ml tube for the 6v, and maybe one full tube for the 4 and 2. So, if you get at least three full 37ml tubes of Titanium, it will probably do the trick. Assuming, of course, your empty tubes are 37ml-ish.

@@NeilsonCarlin l feel slightly disrespectful asking this one. I am wondering if the gamblin light, medium and darks are to cool? I have a value scale given to me that’s about 25 yrs old now and the teacher had assigned a student the task of making them. It is warmer. I have my suspicion that it wasn’t the greatest operation.

Thanks for the video. Where did you get that value scale that you use under the glass in your masterson palette? Did it come with it?

I've treated tube-white as 9, and neutral-black as 1. Paint not being pure and true. Then 5 is halfway between 1 & 9. 3 is halfway between 1 & 5. 2 is halfway between 1 & 3. Etc..... Pure-white being 10 and True-black being 0.
