I have this router and love it, but see a review of all these trim routers saying it sucks because it's hard to adjust, just falls out. That's actually one of the things I like about it, I can pop the thing out and change the bit in seconds. As for adjustment, you just learn the technique and it's super easy.

I have this router and i love it. i was in the store for an hour trying to decide whether to go corded or cordless! it's so stable and easy to handle. Only real negative i have with it is chews batteries like mad. Even still, would highly recommend. Thanks for the video mate, although it was a tad long for my taste.

Its all about the battery size. They pair the cordless stuff with the smallest battery, so you have to buy a bigger one.

Btw the router (DRT50ZJX2)has just been released today with the plunge base and offset base as well as the standard in one of the new stackable cases( think festool) for $355 Aus. Standard tool is $249 Aus. Very tempting after your review though I'm not sure if I would have a need for the other bases already having a plunge router. I started some woodworking projects at home. I realized pretty fast that once you start with the visible work. You won’t get far without one of these. I’m already all in on makita. So the choice is easy for me. It seems like people are pretty happy with the woodworking tools from makita. Good quality for the money. The plungesaw is another great example. Festool is great, but only if you are a dedicated preffesional that needs that extra edge. Very expensive.

4 years later I got the 14.4V version which has both 6mm and 8mm collet. Plus a 6mm bit. Dust cover All clear plastic base (rectangular) others are the same waiting for 40V XGT version, and half inch router.

Nothing wrong with battery routers. I own four routers; one 1/2" Hitachi, a 1/4" Ryobi and a Black and Decker 1/4", all three corded, and a Ryobi 1/4" 18 v trim router. My go to tool is the battery powered Ryobi. Works just as well as the corded ones and a lot handier. A trick to adjust but otherwise just as good.

I think they are only available in Aussie and New Zealand at the moment. But it won't be long before they sweep the world. It is a great little tool and I have thrashed it since I got it a few days back. Even the wife wants to use it to try some crafty things so I am going to teach her how to use it this weekend. Any Makita tool with a 'Z' at the end of the model number is a 'skin' and does not come with batteries or chargers, as most people will already have these from the first tools they bought.

Using a router table will give far better results plus can work a lot faster and safer. Makita can't be beaten tools made to last. I have a old Makita cordless drill 33 years old used daily and still as good as ever. They may seem exspensive but your paying for top quality high specifications and the electric motors can't be beaten.

Hi, makita says that the tool can be used with 6 and 8mm bits, but in the video you said that there is a standart 6.35 collet. So what's the way to use it with 8mm bits? I'm asking because 6mm are hard to find here, where i live.

In some parts of the world it comes with a 6.35mm collet and an 8mm. In this part of the world it came with 6.35mm and 9.5mm for some reason. So check the makita website of your country and it may come with the 8mm collet. Otherwise you can buy one from ebay or Makita.

In Australia,a decade ago, we had Maktec. Maybe still do. It's hobbyist grade Makita, has a reddish livery. Bunnings sells the same stuff branded Makita. Same model numbers. Allegedly to avoid price-matching calls.

I would recommend it with provisos. It has limited height compared to a floor mount. It is noisy. It is inaccurate in regards to chuck wobble. If you want to use it all day everyday, get a conventional one. It is fine for my needs... just.

Wow that's good news, that should complete my setup. Not long after I switched to Makita from DeWalt, DeWalt started coming out with the flexvolt stuff and the cordless 12", I thought I was going to end up with 2 sets of batteries on my truck.

It's depends on H,L,W how big is your trimming line. I just finished a small hobby project. It took me complete two 5Amps batteries. I love the router though. Easy to use.

Thanks for the great review. I've been looking at these for a few weeks and been searching online to find a proper review to see if it's powerful enough. I plan on using this to cut some some large circular art boards or my wife. If I make up a home made jig out of plywood will it be easy enough to screw to the base on this router? Thanks again.

Yes. You could cut a circle in a long strip of plywood the same size as the router base and just place it in as you turn it to cut. Or unscrew the plate on the bottom of the router and screw the router directly to the strip of ply. Or easiest way would probably be to attach the straight edge guide to the tool and the screw that to the ply. There are lots of fairly easy ways to do it. If you are doing circles smaller than about 400mm then you can just use the guide that comes with the tool. Good Luck.

On the NZ Makita website it says it comes with '6mm, 8mm or 1/4", 3/8"'. Mine did not come with an 8mm, it came with a 3/8"(9.5mm). But where you live it may be different. If it does not come with an 8mm collet you could always buy one from your Makita stockists or ebay.

It does not come with an 8mm collet. It comes with a 1/4" (6.35mm) as standard, and an 3/8" (9.5mm) one. The 6.35mm is fine for the job and the 9.5mm is rubbish looking, though I haven't tried it.

As with most wood cutting tools it is the act of the blade cutting that makes the most noise, so even if the motor is "Quiet", as soon as you start using it that is when the noise really kicks in.

please run it with a flush trim bit through plywood like you are trimming the plywood to the size of a table frame. This is by far the bast torture test I've found for these palm routers. My Bosch colt has plenty of power to do this task all day but my Ridgid cordless smoked itself after an 8ft cut doing the same thing.

The only thing I would add, is if you screwed some crap wood on the back side of the work piece it would be more stable pushing against, quicker, and easier on your hands. Just a thought to make your job easier.

The question that immediately comes to mind is WHY. Why are manufactures making battery versions for all of their tools? $$$$€€€€ This is really irresponsible of these companies to promote the excessive and unnecessary use of batteries. It places a drain on resources and creates a huge disposal and or recycling problem . Aside from that , corded tools will work uninterrupted and generally have waay more power . Also, there is no need to have all these battery operated tools because everyone has power at their house or shop and if your on a job site , grid power is usually available . if not grid power ,then a generator will be used. The only battery powered tools i use are drills , impact drivers and a small makita circular saw for a quick cut in the yard or away from an outlet. other than that i prefer using my corded tools

Well I do a lot of work nowhere near power and it is a lot easier to carry a battery Nail gun into the bush over an air compressor and petrol generator (are they good for the planet?) I love that its battery powered but I still can't believe they haven't put an LED light on it! most of my tools are makita and theres lights on a fair few of them, most of which I find pretty un-necessary to be honest such as the new brushless drills and impact drivers but of the one tool which could truely use a light so you can clearly see the work surface, its the trimmer!! As a Carpenter I use a trimmer every other day for fitting door furniture and I'm truely surprised that no company has brought out a trimmer with a light yet that I'm aware of.
