We are a young family living completely off-grid in a woodland which we have grown ourselves over the past 15 years.
As a woodsman and tree surgeon, I use chainsaws as part of my everyday life. Today I will be looking at the MAKITA DUC254 chainsaw and reviewing it as an addition to my collection of fuel-powered saws from both the perspective of an arborist using it as part of the trade and a woodsman using it for woodland maintenance.
In this video I use the saw to raise an area of our woodland, which has been planted in line with permaculture principles. This is a big step towards adding an under-layer of smaller trees and shrubs, and will also help to make the woodland easier to walk through and more enjoyable.
If you would like to see how our woodland develops, or learn about our off grid life in general, consider subscribing to our channel.
Our videos focus on:
Permaculture and food forest development Solar power
Water collection and filtration
Bee keeping
Off grid building projects
If you have any questions or comments please add them to the comments section below and we will get back to you.
Thanks for watching!

I just received mine today - super cute! Love the single battery setup (don’t always need my twin battery saws). My plan is to keep this in my truck - so always ready to cut. I bought this mainly to get into arborist jobs I need to do. Smaller form should be great when climbing and scaling up trees. The fast chain speed is ideal to zap through smaller branches to alliviate the canopy weight I love the new faster chain speed - I think it’s 25m/sec - where the older generation was 6m/s.

I've got the 36v 14" makita, it's my main saw now 2 sets of 6ah battries will keep me in wood for a week, cutting 10" to 16" old oak :) it's so much nicer to use than the old petrol saw :)

Terrific project - wish you the best. It's great to see these principles & values in at least some young people - gives one hope for what is otherwise a bleak future, if acquisitive, consumerist & short-term thinking continue to hold sway. I've found a great (and cheaper!) alternative to the Silky: Samurai Saws make a competing range - I use the C-330-LH It's also first-class Japanese tool steel with wickedly-sharp triple-ground teeth at 4TPI. The ergonomics are good and the blades can be replaced without needing to junk the handle.

A license to buy a chainsaw? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! I love freedom. Great review, the footage of you pruning that little tree sold it! I have bigger chainsaws but at pushing 50, they get heavy after a while and I just want to prune and limb without getting wore out. Plus it feels like a carbon offset.

I've been using cordless power tools all my working life and can't imagine getting by without them. I have one Stihl battery powered chainsaw. For what it is it works surprisingly well. I have a pole pruner too which saves me climbing the fruit trees to prune them. The chain is a bit short lived but I don't use it to much. It's ridiculous how many tools you need to maintain acreage eh ? All my old Makita kit was Cadmium battery's and once they died I drifted in to Ryobi 18 volt thinking it's probably not going to last but it's cheap. Ten years plus later I'm still using Ryobi and surprised how well their kit holds up. I've got a lot of power corded Makita that still works like new though and if I'm on site I use the 2.3 inverter Honda to run stuff. Now Ryobi is getting pricey and cheaper stuff is taking up the low end.
