Thanks for the comparison. I have the Makita (previous version 18v x 2). The stock chain (supplied) is feckin horrible. I switched out after 2 weeks (of it binding) to 3/8" 0.50 (no modifications required other than a new bar and chain) and was a remarkable difference. I was ready to take the Makita back to the shop before. The stihl chain (for the climbing saw is a pro full chisel (and the best in class chain) whereas the Makita is a semi-chisel homeowner safety chain (much slower cutting). I'm not sure what the stock chain is on the Husky however, I doubt its a homeowner chain It would be really great (and a lot fairer) to run the same chain manufacturers on each saw and same bar profile (The Oregon or Carlton non safety semi-chisel would be a fair choice and you can get that to fit all those saws) It would also be better to run the test with equal battery sizes. The 8ah battery on the stihl is not realistic (use the 5amp). No one in their right mind will lug that thing up a tree. Weight is king when it comes to climbing saws and the MS201T is stihl king for power to weight at about 5kg with chain, bar, fuel, and oil. I've been waiting for this video for a couple of weeks and now I'm sad.......I still don't have a true comparison of the new stihl to the other models. P.S The makita is a MAX volt of 40v but on test it's 36v. It is no different in power to the 18v x 2 model. Main differences are it's lighter and only has one power mode. The 18v x 2 starts in an eco mode but to gain full power, you have to turn it off, long press (5sec) the power button to get into the full power mode. When it turns off (after 10 seconds of no use) you need to do the 5sec hold again to get back to full power. It's a pain and makes sense that Makita got rid of that in the newer 40V version.

Your comment is more useful than the entire video. I own nine gas saws, six of which are top-handle units, and three of those are Stihls. While not a professional, I maintain a 40-acre estate with thousands of trees. What is your opinion of the 18-volt top-handle Makita? I would only consider it because I have a number of Makita 18-volt tools, and at least six batteries, so my only initial cost would be a bare tool and upgraded bar and chain as you wisely suggest. I don’t use top-handle saws for in-tree work. I learned years ago that a top-handle unit is easily the best all-around saw for all smaller wood. Nothing beats their light weight and one-hand balance for extended use.

Subed! My Tree Surgeon friend has been using a STIHL MSA 300 in 18" for some time now, and I installed his charging setup in his work truck. About his setup: I added a split charger coming off the alternator which is charging the starter battery plus 12v 400ah lifepo4 batteries (16x 3.2v 100ah cells running 4s 4p) giving 4.8kwh of storage, we also added 2 120w flexible solar panels to the roof which feed into 15a mttp charge controller, then we have a 3kw pure sine wave inverter AC 240v, this is an overkill system, but the inverter also powers a 1.5kw kettle for hot drinks a small 800w microwave and a 40w fridge for milk and cold drinks etc, then we have a 4 way slow battery charger and 1 fast charger/cooler and 4 500S and 4 300s batteries for 2 e-saws as he has an MSA 220TC0 also, the complete setup cost £5k, the 2x saws just under £1500, 4x 500S £1140, 4x 300s £1100, 2 chargers £425, the Lifepo4 with BMS £400 (alisxpress) inverter EGSCATEE £220, 2x 120w solar panels with controller £200, and the split charge relay plus needed wire and fusses £40, but it will pay for itself in the first year with the price of petrol and oil as high as it is, as he was spending £120 a week to fuel his petrol saws that's £6k a year alone.

Enjoyed the video - nice one, but bigger chain isn't easier to sharpen chaps! 1.1 gauge is perfect for top handled climbing saws, it offers a nice clean cut when just doing small pruning work and will cope fine with bigger take downs. 1.3 gauge 3/8th pitch is more aggressive cutting but is overkill for smaller thinning work when climbing. Been doing this malarkey for over thirty years so kinda know what I'm talking about....(old git).

C'mon guys, 36v and 40v systems are THE SAME. Li-ion cells runs on 4.25v (fully charged ) to 2.5v (cut-off voltage), with nominal voltage defined as 3.6v. So they build these battery packs in the sets of 10 can call them whatever they want - 25V Min, 36V 40V Max, 42.5V Max, etc. If you measure voltage of the fully charged 18v Makita battery it will be between 20 and 21 volts.

Have a quick face cut test. I often find the cordless struggle with the diagonal cut of a harder wood face cut. Currently running the stihl stuff as I already have all the batteries.... They seem to be harder wearing than the husky stuff, but gave stories from friends about both platforms having battery issues.
@happycamper6352
@happycamper6352 10 ай бұрын
If there's problems cutting diagonal, check the chain. If you want to cut diagonal face cuts well, you should look for: * full chisel (not semi-chisel or round corner), * non-safety chain (meaning only the really little rakers on the cutting links, not the leading rakers on the tie straps), * full comp (not skip tooth or semi-skip tooth) * and a good 3/8 chain (that will cut a good kerf slightly wider than the guide bar to avoid easy dust clogs and pinches). The first and last items above make the biggest difference if you ask me. The others help but aren't as drastic in terms of a difference made.

I use the Husqvarna for work and own the Makita (2 x 18v version). The Husqvarna has noticeably better resistance to bogging and probably slightly better speed in the cut. The .325 LP chain is superior to the Makita's 3/8 LP (it's also less available at hardware stores). However, in the cold/wet climate of the northwest US, the Husqvarna's batteries fail frequently, even if you're careful to charge them dry and warm. Not to mention, with the saw + battery + charger, the thing costs over a thousand freaking dollars. The Makita cuts ok in terms of speed, but you really have to baby it in terms of chain tension and how aggressive you are in the cut. It can be annoying to deal with. I've been torture testing it in very cold and very wet conditions. So far, no battery issues. Of course, I can't know how long that will hold. It also costs just less than half of what the Husqvarna costs. IMO, the Makita is clearly a superior value. If you swap out the bar/sprocket/chain and run a Panther bar with quarter inch pitch chain, you get rid of the performance shortcomings, and you're still about $400 cheaper than the Husqvarna. If you absolutely must have the highest performing saw and you're in a climate that is easy on batteries, sell a kidney, get the Husqvarna, and convert it to run a Panther bar.

@@FlyingLemming I give the KZbin reviewers credit for actually testing the products, even if those tests are insufficient. Normal internet search engine results for professional "reviews", are essentially nothing but the manufacturer's brochure on the product with a monetized link to buy it. It's unfortunate that good reviews are so hard to find these days, but it takes time and effort to actually understand and evaluate products, and no one wants to take that sort of time when you can make the money without putting in the work.

How do the batteries last on these three? HAve to keep in mind that the Makita is about half the price of the Husq and the Stihl.
@ArnodJ
@ArnodJ 11 ай бұрын
Husqvarna and Stihl batteries are far better than Makita, because they are build of the outdoor work and being in rainy, extreme warm and cold conditions. Makita is good for people who are into construction, DIY or technical jobs that already have everything from Makita and just need this.

I've had the ego top handle saw for 5 months now. I am a bit annoyed with the integrated lanyard battery pack. It's the same concept as Husqvarna's umbilical battery pack, where you swap the battery pack for a connector or sorts and have the battery pack on your harness instead of the power head. With EGO's saw however, you don't have the option to have the battery on the power head, it's only a connection to the seperate battery pack. This is ok for climbing, but if you are cutting on the ground it's cumbersome to be lugging the battery pack around. The saw has torque, but lacks chain speed in my opinion. Also be leary of the saw hook that is provided for the integrated lanyard. I ended up replacing mine with a delta link, far more secure.

Problem for me is that the batteries don t last long - 25 mins is what am finding - otherwise the Makita makes most sense as the batteries can be used in their other tools just like the Dewalt ones Until charging points are put in woodlands and forests I'll keep my petrol saws

I'm very grateful for your comment. I'm a long time petrol chainsaws user and I was planning to switch on battery saws. I don't know anyone to ask for, I was very concerned about battery lasting. So your comment cleared my mind.
@natsterlive
@natsterlive Жыл бұрын
@@Carlo_B I'm a arborist and use a battery powered dewalt for my everyday climbing saw. I get half a day out of my little dewalt 12 inch 20 volt chainsaw with a 6 ah battery. If cutting 3 inch branches and less. If I'm cutting 12 inch wood, we get 40 min. Unlike husky and Stihl, the top 3 dewal, Milwaukee, and mikita are all advancing their batter size over time. I can now get a 12 ah battery the same physical size and weight as the 6 ah I was getting half a day in small wood from. So in 12 inch wood, the 12 ah battery would give 1.5 hrs of run time. That's longer than my gas saw lasts on a tank of fuel. See the pattern.
@Carlo_B
@Carlo_B Жыл бұрын
@@natsterlive I'm an arborist too, and I'm specialized in olive tree pruning. Here in Italy battery chainsaws are not very common, and even way more less common are Dewalt tools. I've been using Zenoah gasoline chainsaws for over 15 years, but since gasoline and oil prices are getting higher every day, I was planning to turn on the battery powered gear. By reading your comment It seems that Dewalt, Milwaukee and Makita chainsaws are better than Husky and Stihl ones. This sounds very strange for me, because Husqvarna and Stihl are the biggest chainsaws dealers in the world, and I think they are very experienced in that tools. Instead, the other three brands yuo've mentioned are manufacturers of tools for building works, so I've always thought that their landscaping lines of products are for non-professional use. Did you used gasoline chainsaws before turning to battery chainsaws? Is there a real saving over the time, considering the high prices of battery packs and chargers? Thank you
@natsterlive
@natsterlive Жыл бұрын
@@Carlo_B no dewalt saw is not better than husqvarna saws. Dewalt, Milwaukee and mikita have more battery capacity than husqvarna or Stihl. I used gas saws for climbing up until 3 years ago. The battery powered saws are far safer as the chain stops instantly, and there is no need to pull start or leave it running. On the ground the battery saws will never replace the gas saws. On the ground I run a husqvarna 572 xp. It cuts amazing, auto tune makes it run perfectly in any weather unless 28 Celsius or hotter. Then it does not like to be shut off hot. Any of the 5th generation gas saws by husqvarna are great Stihl saws are not worth the money as they cost more than husqvarna and don't perform nearly as well
