I have one,as a professional green keeper I find this a awesome mower❤ Only complaint I would have is that the mowing speed could have 2 speeds When it powers up through thick grass is the second speed I would have and I don’t really use the self propulsion only on severe hills but this is what I believe drains the batteries Excellent machine I can get 1-1 1/2 hours of mowing per 4 batteries
@peterprobst63072 жыл бұрын
I own this mower because I am heavily into the Makita 18 volt ecosystem and wanted to get away from some of the noisy gas mowers used in my business. Although I mostly like it, I don't believe for a minute that a lawn care pro would give this mower anything more than casual consideration, even if they are into Makita's 18 volt tools. I do absolutely agree with your observations on the controls and wheels. Both functions are excellent in my opinion. I am also mostly pleased with battery performance in my current situation since I only use the self propelled function when going up a hill or when starting out in a tight place when changing direction. I also have plenty of 5 amp batteries. As for the battery compartment cover not staying open, no problem as I just prop it open with one battery and have 2 hand access for the other batteries. On the down side, I find that the length of the plastic section that holds the front wheels negativity affects the ability to cut the final 6 to 10 inches immediately in front of a physical barrier such as edging or a wall when you don't have the ability to walk the mower parallel to the barrier. The shear weight of the mower combined with the front end design does not help manuverabily when having to change direction in tight spaces. I think much lighter composite deck like on the Ego would be a huge plus here, though the lighter weight could result in it not staying planted firmly on all 4 wheels at higher ground speed over uneven lawns. Also, in my experience, the deck doesn't provide a true 21 inch cut since there are always too many uncut blades unless I overlap the cutting swath by several inches (I regularly sharpen my mower blades, including this blade). Based on using this mower this past season, this is not my idea of a "professional" mower. The motor doesn't provide the necessary tip speed for a consistently clean cut cuts and the mower's design results in a lack manuverabily to be able to quickly complete one job and move onto the next. I my opinion, the primary reason Makita markets this as a professional grade mower is the heavy steel deck and rubber wheels.

I find the positive reviews on this mower baffling. I have now used it twice and it's going back shortly. Its run time is horrific in anything but the best conditions. If the grass is at all wet and/or you are daring to cut a couple inches off at a time it is lucky to run for 15 min and during the last 5 min of that its diminishing power is extremely noticeable; it is slower and the motor locks up when grass clogs up inside.

Great review. I switched from the EGO platform and I'll explain why. Firstly, the mower itself was great. It's powerful, folds up, not very heavy, overall works good. The downside of EGO is their batteries. They simply do not last. I killed SIX (yes SIX) $380 batteries in a six year timespan. That is insane. The plastic deck sounds great, but one of the problems with it is if you mow around a lot of obstructions. If you're bending tight around a tree you will push the deck into the blade, and you will get impacts on the interior of the deck. Do this long enough and it will cut a hole right through the side of the mower. Secondly, the telescopic handles have flip open locks that disengage from the front. As an engineer, that is a terrible design. Again, if you're bending around obstructions, near bushes, etc. any branch will flip open the lock. The telescopic handles have a battery kill switch inside of them, so when that lock flips open from an obstruction it kills the mower. Overall the mower did feel kind of cheap. Handles would pop off, levers would break, etc. I cant' speak for the newer EGO models, but people need to understand the mower batteries for EGO's cost an absolute fortune and they simply do not last more than 2-3 years each. Factor that $380 expense on top of a $600 mower and I think you'll reconsider.

Hmm. That's interesting. I have Makita power tools and I write off at least 2 batteries every year just from normal power tool usage. Nothing that would equate to the high drain, full duty cycle of mowing a lawn or trimming for an hour. I have 3 EGO batteries for 4 EGO tools that I've owned for just less than 2 years. Too early to really tell, but so far they've been flawless cutting my whole lawn in the middle of a Texas summer. I chose the EGO platform specifically because I some people that had other platforms like greenworks etc. that had massive overheating issues. Time will tell.

Thank you, we just got here in Australia the Makita 36v 21" lawn mower DLM536PT4X kit charger and 4 batteries for $1,350.00 it's a Brushless self propelled model, it's virtually the same but without the rubber mudflap thingy and has the 4 seperate blades. I also until your video did not know at time of purchase that it did not fold down. Naively i thought that was a given with all lawn mowers but i guess its not too much of a big deal it's a two bolt problem easily fixed. I'm currently charging the batteries for the first time ready to fire it up. This video helped a lot to give me some insight and use of this lawn mower once i fire it up as instruction booklets these days are underwhelming and do not say much at all except how to assemble. I didn't realise it had a mulch function at time of purchase until unboxing. It didn't say how to switch between the two and how to use, instructions didn't explain to us the key function so here i am youtubing trying to figure out what it's all about before i use it.

This video is a year old now. Are you still happy with this Makita mower? I am not locked into any manufacturer as my power tools are Milwaukee M12 Fuel. Thank you!

Yep. Thanks for correcting the rear flap function. Yes I am still happy with the mower. The Milwaukee mower is more powerful but has a few issues. Looking to using it some more after a replacement one gets here. I think the best mower would be… the makita xml08 deck, with the Milwaukee power, Milwaukee rear side discharge, makita handles and controls, makita wheels, makita self propel function , Milwaukee self propelled top speed, makita battery compartment (4x batteries) Milwaukee blade, and Milwaukee bagging. That would be a great mower. Personally I don’t care for the handle folding down as don’t use that function. I’m sure others probably want it though.

@@4thewinak Thanks for the reply! I bought the Makita. Very happy with it except for 2 things. #1) Crappy packaging. Nearly impossible to get the damn thing out of the box without cutting the box to shreds. Didn't make any difference which of the 4 batteries was placed in that 1 Right bay. Makita said this was a defect and to return it. HD sent it and returned it for free. Also gave me a 10% discount if I ordered a replacement. Which I did. Got it shipped for $628. I'm really happy as I liked the way it mows and handles. Nearly identical to my 32 y.o. @@krazmokramer nice! Some hassle but saved some $$$ in the end. Mine does that sometimes, the battery draining issue, but not all the time. The packaging was damaged and some of the parts from the bag were in the box but not enough for assembly so I was unable to even try the mower. This mower weighs 106 pounds...consider this if you want to return it. And yes, I called Makita. Makita customer service was not interested in helping me with the missing parts. I didn’t see any parts list in the box, but that could have fallen out the hole in the box during shipping. I have been using Makita tools for literally decades, but this mower convinced me to go in a different direction.

Never had good luck with any customer service, regardless of brand/company. Agreed the mower is heavy, probably not for the regular user, but more designed for roll on and off the trailer folks. I don't think this mower is for most people. Most folks are better off with almost any other mower available. the one good thing i've experience with the heavy mower is when going over lumps, bumps, tall grass/week, it doesn't flop around like a light weight or plastic mower does. on bumpy lawns it handles it well versus flopping around. provides a more even cut.

Yeah that side chute will easily get dislodged. Happened to me many time already. The Milwaukee designed follows similar to the Toro design where has a rear side discharge. I find that I actually like the rear side discharge better. Especially if you’re trying to get through like a gate or a door

How long do all 4 batteries last while mowing?

too many variables factor into answer this question, but so far seem on par with most battery mowers in terms of acres cut per amp hour of battery.

Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower kzbin.infoUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

I use the basket for short grass and side discharge for tall grass, problem is the side discharge chute is flimsy and cheap with both its construction and how its attached, you have to constantly be aware of keeping the RH side over cut grass stop it being pushed off. Would gladly pay extra for a studier side chute, made of aluminum, that bolts on.

Agreed. The side discharge could be better. I would prefer a rear side discharge like toro / milwaukee
