DIY: Clay Fruit Bowls from Scratch - Watermelon, Orange, Lime

Hey guys! In this video I'm going to show you how to make watermelon, orange, lime/lemon bowls out of clay! This is the perfect summer project, since they are fun to make and also look so delicious! These bowls are just perfect for decorating anything in your home for summer! They are easy to make and you will need just a few things!

► Things you will need:
- Bowl for the mould
I tried different ways to find out what works best. And somehow almost every clay bowl I removed from a metal bowl, survived it! So I would recommend trying out different types of bowls!
- Rolling pin (Staedtler Fimo)
- Air dry clay (Staedtler Fimo Air Basic) amzn.to/1JlvMPQ *
- Cutter/X-Acto knife
- Acrylic paint (Schmincke)
- Brushes
► Optional
- Pen for texture
- Aluminium foil for texture
- Aquapro professional varnish - N°2 Ultra Brilliant
I couldn't find the exact same varnish on Amazon, but here are the alternatives from the same brand:
Decopatch Aquapro Professional Varnish amzn.to/1exRNhu *
Decopatch Aquapro Professional Varnish Satine No. 1 amzn.to/1VLTHwX *
The packaging of the glaze I used says the surface becomes food-safe after 3 coats, but I couldn't find any source that would say if that's really 100% food safe or not. There is another varnish by this brand called "Aquapro Satin Varnish", it's supposed to be an approved food-safe varnish, but after researching it, some sources said it might be not food safe after all. So I don't know what you can trust! I think it's okay to use the varnish, if the packaging says it's food-safe, but you still should be careful!
So if you want to use the bowls for food, be sure to research the different types of the varnishes you are consider using for that.
► Alternative for the process
You guys can also place the clay inside the bowl by gently pressing down the clay so you get the shape of it. When the clay is dry, it will shrink a bit and it will be easier to remove the clay bowl from the bowl as it will detach from the bowl itself! When I tested that I used a metal bowl, and it was so easy to remove it. Even easier than when I placed it on top of the bowl! But I would suggest just trying it out! Since I always got different results!
Keep in mind, that the drying time depends on the clay you are using. I would check after a few hours, if the clay is dry enough to hold its shape, so you can remove it from the bowl. If you wait too long, it might impossible to remove the clay, without breaking it. :(
But I can really recommend using metal bowls!

You guys can also place the clay inside the bowl by gently pressing down the clay so you get the shape of it. When the clay is dry, it will shrink a bit and it will be easier to remove the clay bowl from the bowl as it will detach from the bowl itself! When I tested that I used a metal bowl, and it was so easy to remove it. Even easier than when I placed it on top of the bowl! But I would suggest just trying it out! Since I got always different results!

Even though the glaze is food safe, acrylic paint is not. With three coats of glaze does it cover the acrylic paint up enough? Also since these are not kiln fired they would not be dishwasher microwave safe and would not have the strength of kiln fired clay. They are super cute maybe some orange or watermelon candies wrapped?

Oven bake clay is probably good, and you should probably paint it after.

don't use acrylic paints at all the paint will chip off and it can harm your body and brain

Ich bin selbst nicht ganz sicher welche Auswirkung es hat, wenn man einfach nur kleinere Sachen in die Schüssel legt und es dann daraus nimmt, um es zu essen. Aber manche sind ja sehr vorsichtig damit. In meinbem Bastelladen hab ich einen Lack gefunden, der Lebensmittelecht ist, aber für manche würde das sicher auch nicht ausreichen. Manche nutzen die Sachen jedoch für Lebensmittel. Ich weiß es selbst nicht! Alle sind verschiedener Meinung irgendwie. :( Ich hab eigentlich sehr wenig für eine Schale gebraucht. Vielleicht so 100 gramm oder so. Ich hatte eine 1kg Packung gekauft und ich musste nur ein bisschen davon abreissen und es hat eigentlich gereicht! Kommt aber drauf an wie groß und dick du die Schale haben möchtest!

Intentaré hacerlo y probar.Me gusta su idea de usarlos para el verano. También porque no hacer un plato más grande para las palomitas? Advice for this!!! When it cracks wait til it dries and take it off the mould. Then make some slip (Just mix water and clay until it goes soft and kinda like paste) then just fill in the cracks with it! In my experience, depending of the depth of the crack, it can take a couple of times before the crack is fully sealed. But this is usually what I do :) I made an animal crossing fossil out of clay for my lizard and it had a huge crack running right through it and this worked for that just took about 5 times, waiting for it to dry each time. Idk if this comment is necessary anymore but thought I'd leave it anyways
