I really enjoyed your reply until you mentioned "saving" a Storklete that had a probable chance of a genetic issue. "Saving" these genetically defective birds can pass on that genetic defect to the defective birds future offspring, making said species genetically weaker as a whole and ultimately, making said species go extinct. The parents are rejecting it for a reason. I enjoy watching these wild birds and I hope, my children's children will be able to watch them too! Mother nature made these birds the way they are for a reason. God put the instincts into these birds on how to handle each offspring they reproduce. It's always best to leave nature to nature. Humans start messing with it and I guarantee we will screw it all up and they will no longer be existent. People need to stop thinking of the "right now" with these wild animals and think long term because they're NOT. Saving a defective animal isn't going to make any animal species prosper. They already have to fight us humans for space, food etc.. They HAVE TO BE at their peekest possible performance for survival and being defective is just putting off the inevitable.

Terrific and detailed reply. A few points. It is interesting that storks almost never have more than 2 or so fledge per brood, so this outcome is almost pre-ordained. Also, the picked on chicks are almost always the youngest. I think it's less a genetic defect, than "why should I expend more time and food on you?" Now, I have seen some videos where if the picked on chick shows some spunk, and in response fights its way back to the group or, better yet, responds to mom's bullying by attacking its siblings, the mom's attack stops. So I do think this is a bit of a test to see if the youngest of the group has enough aggression or fighting spirit to be worth saving at that point in the process. That's why I think the "torturing" happens before the drop - To give the chick a chance to "prove itself," which sadly they rarely do...

Tonicka's behaviour also puzzles me. Last year there was the storklet whose leg muscles were developing backwards and he couldn't get up. Tonicka is not the greatest stork mother and there was no reason for this behaviour, in my opinion. The nest is located on a rescue station where there is plenty of food and the argument that she can detect neurological damage is not biologically convincing. Her behaviour is erratic at the best of times. I believe this was only the second time she had storklets as she and her partner have been living there for many storkless years. The manager of the rescue station came and removed it to an aviary where it would have been raised separately but it died shortly afterwards. Some people don't watch videos to the end. It’s an involuntary natural survival instinct probably, that animal parents might have regarding weak or sick offspring. Instinct tells the parent stork that a weak chick already has poor survival odds, plus the extra energy required to care for a weak chick threatens the healthy chicks survival. So a parent stork might kill or push a weak chick out of the nest in order to be able to turn it’s energy back toward care of the chicks with the best survival odds.

So this year, in an environment of abundance, Tonicka, in my view, acted out of cruelty. She was over preening this chick and the poor little thing tried to escape. And that made things worse for him. She really came after him with a vengeance. And if you think about it, there is a lot of inexplicable cruelty in the human species. U sure? I have seen ton of videos of mother storks murdering their youngest chicks and she wasn't teaching it to not get near the edge because every of the video I watch ed of the mother murdering her chick she does that that u say "she's teaching them not to get near the edge" she does it till the chick is too weak or until the chick dies because of how powerful she is u silly or maybe ur right because I can see why u say that but every video says that the mothers are murdering their chicks because their immature not they went too near to the edge

Nah, she was murdering them. Probably, cant feed enough of mouths. Like 40% end like that regarding storklet population. Happens too often.

I just wanted to say that the way that this storklet was being tossed around the way that it was, this was not preening. When preening storklets, they do it very gently with their beaks to every single one of them. This one looked like it was specifically singled out and she wasn’t just checking to see how big it was growing. She was definitely attempting something here.

Yes, the mother had decided to eliminate this storklet and she succeeded. The manager of the rescue station removed the storklet but the injuries were fatal and it did not survive. Thanks for your visit and comment, Ninamarie.😊🍁🌼

It is very sad indeed to observe this behaviour. The idea behind multiple eggs is to make sure that some will hatch and some of the storklets will be healthy. Raising storklets is a marathon and requires so much energy. Thank you for your observation and I wish you a pleasant day.🌼
