This performance was a part of the final concert of the “Points of Intersection” Conducting Workshop, organized by the Octopus Student Scientific and Creative Society and the National Presidential Orchestra. The main aim of this Workshop is to create a platform for exchanging experiences between experienced musicians and beginners in performing new symphonic music. The project mentor is French conductor and composer Etienne Haan.
This symphonic piece of Maksym Kolomiiets was written based on the composer's opera of the same name. It is based on the poems of Paul Celan, which reflect on the tragedy of the Holocaust. “Aspen tree, your leaves gaze white into the dark. / My mother’s hair ne’er turned white”, sings the main character of the opera. According to the plot, he sings the last aria standing over the river and plunges into the abyss with the last sounds of the bassoon.
