Yes, 100% agree on the high ISO craze. I think it's useful for special circumstances, but overall it's a sales tactic. Over the past year with the A7S, I've gone above 3200 a handful of times. I'm sure other people find more use from that. Using quality lenses, finding the right light, or simply lighting the scene appropriately are much more valuable for the long run.

One comment regarding the position of the controls on the grip - After using the FS5 for only 2 weeks, I think the controls are well positioned if you use the grip at various angles. Initially, I also thought the joy stick was too far back, but I find it is in a great position when using the grip twisted forward. You can also tilt the grip forward one notch to make the joy stick more accessible. The ergonomics do take getting used to, but after only 2 weeks of use I am no longer looking around for controls anywhere on the camera.

You can get excellent video from all kinds of cameras. Pro doesn't necessarily mean better quality. If you are doing something all the time, your less willing to put up with the hassles that you get from consumer grade gear. Every time I shoot, I have to set up three cameras and audio. Pro gear means good cables and connections, easy reliable set up and operation. If you are a mechanic, you want good wrenches even though you could do the job with a monkey wrench and a screw driver with a bunch of interchangeable tips. Just because you can get great video with a Sony A6300, doesn't mean you want to make your living with this camera. Gerry in Calgary

I know exactly what you're talking about. Thanks for sharing this, as it's something many should hear. For example, even though I'm in love with many Sony innovations (and those new Batis lenses, WOW -- a look I love!!), I still can't get over that Canon C300 Mark II I rented one weekend. Nothing was ever that seamless and easy. One man band, impatient subjects (I shoot mostly documentary style interviews + some pretty B roll), no problem. The only camera, so far, I'd ever use autofocus on for professional purposes. They just nailed it. Only the giant file sizes are an issue. I hope Sony makes an FS6 or something just like this. The FS5 Vari-ND + Batis lenses would make an incredible combo.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the FS5's highlight handling ability. You can easily see this in your samples. I can say that I have compared my FS5 to my A7s-II, NX70 and RX10-II and let me tell you, very harsh highlights that blow out other cameras get handled significantly better on the FS5. In fact, my testing even shows that the FS5 captures more shadow detail than my A7s-II. This completely shocked me! The FS5's implementation of SLOG-2/3 is even better than the A7s-II. Again, very shocking. (Not that there is anything wrong with the A7s-II in any way, it's just that the FS5 somehow handles shadows and highlights a bit better)

Thanks for the review, I've been shooting with a Nikon D800/D750 for the last few years and just purchased the Sony FS5 and used it last week. You're right that it takes time to get used to it after using DSLRs for so long. The one thing I noticed that I didn't like was that it wasn't as good in low light as my D750 for video, urrgg.., but I think I'll take you're suggestion and use a speed booster, I hope they have one for Nikon fx lenses. Anyone know which one to get?

Leica SL is 4K full frame and it'll V-Log alright. Or do you mean make vlogs video logs like KZbin style? You really want a camera with better AF for that. 80D, 1DX II, c300 Mark II, Samsung NX1 or NX500. Flippy screen preferable. But Vice probably wouldn't have gotten where it was without really easy to use cameras that produced gorgeous results even in the hands of amateurs, specifically the C100 and C300. They're basically like super high end vlog cameras.

Ergonomics seem like a rival to the c-series, but when the FS7 challenges the c300 mii, why not challenge the c100 mii with a lower price point? Almost 2k more for 4k and much maligned sony colours..?

Does the fs5 have in-camera lens correction? Im concerned because I checked and this lens supposedly has some weird distortion when zooming in, that's why I'm wondering if it has it in-camera?
@asafblasbergvideographer

before my GH3 and GH4's I had the Sony AX2000 and FX1000. They were so grainy in low light and no 4k/UHD. How well with the 4f lense is it in comparison to say your NX1? lots of situations I'd love a more "video" camera for again but only if the low light quality is good. thanks Max
@MaksimYuryev
@MaksimYuryev 8 жыл бұрын
+Scott Weigel The F4 lenses work well if you don't shoot in no light situations, or very lowlight such as some wedding ceremonies. With 2.8 lenses I rarely have to go over 3200iso at a dimly lit reception, so with a F4 lens I'd be at 6400 which is definitely acceptable with this camera.
@scottweigel5670
@scottweigel5670 8 жыл бұрын
+Max Yuryev so, if I here you correctly, the FS5 is better at iso6400 or equal to say my GH4 at 3200? I just received my Atomos Ninja Flame and would be nice to record in 10bit but looks like the Sony's aren't giving us 10bit. yet another reason to hold back from buying.
@MaksimYuryev
@MaksimYuryev 8 жыл бұрын
+Scott Weigel I'd say the FS5 at 6400 would look similar to the GH4 at 1600. The GH4 is noisy in the shadows even at iso400, where the Sony cameras stay clean in the shadows up to 1600.
@scottweigel5670

+PRIVATE True if you're married to Premier or open to building an OP desktop, but Final Cut is incredibly efficient and makes Apple laptops perhaps the best choice for quick results in a small package, if the user wants to stay portable. Maybe Vegas is more efficient than Premier, though. But Premier uses the hardware very poorly. I bought the latest, highest grade XPS15 with Nvidia 960, figuring it'd beat the crap out of the Nvidia 750 MBP, but it didn't. Not at all. I figured I had a configuration issue, but then I searched the net, and saw this was a common problem. I think even Max himself did a comparison. FCP is 5x faster for some functions. It's ridiculous. I sent back the XPS15 and am waiting begrudgingly for an updated MBP. iMovie even works reasonably well on an iPad Pro. They did some ninja stuff with code optimization.
@improver1849
@improver1849 8 жыл бұрын
There are blow out specials on current MacBook 15 inches for about $1500. I'd grab one of those if that's your budget. While I have no experience with the MPB13, I can say that Final Cut is incredibly efficient, and seems to work amazingly regardless of hardware. At least for simple day to day editing. Even iMovie (which is basically a cut down, simplified Final Cut) on an iPad Pro runs incredibly well. It's amazing how optimized the code is. I tried using a brand new Dell XPS15 with hardware superior to my 2013 or 2014 era MBP, and Premier was much slower. Strange, but true. Apple's software is incredibly well optimized.

+David O' Brien If you're not doing advanced color grading or applying a lot of after effects or noise reduction in post, then a current 13" Macbook Pro with retina display will be fine. I recommend getting a thunderbolt or USB 3.0 external drive that can handle 300+ MBps read/write and has at least 2TB of storage. Then a second external drive for archiving your finished work. The FS5 records on XAVC L and from my experience it's less processor and GPU intensive than XAVC S, though you'll still spend some time waiting for your initial imported video to transcode. If you plan to do any serious post production editing, then I recommend getting a desktop workstation that supports the NLE you use.

is it better than the NX1in Low light? I really don't understand these times, why buying a 6000$ "video" camera if it is worse in "video" quality, and AF than a 1000$ mirrorless cameras? Why just noy burry videocamcorders and focus only on building a great hybrid cheap camera...
@vladimirtalijan
@vladimirtalijan 8 жыл бұрын
+lboymusic That is their problem, Sony doesn't have any plan, any direction, they are just overkilling with technology and hope for the best, and that is why we have $1000 camera almost better than $3000 one, and the same goes for FS5, and FS7. Couple that with the worst color science in the industry, and all you get are high technology cameras made by engineers, not cinematographers or photographers. I would like to see just one commercial video Max made so we can judge his competence just to talk about this stuff, because I have a feeling he really like the specs and that is all, and that is the wrong way. I was in camera purchase recently exactly in this price point, tried and worked with everything, and I went for C100 mark II, it doen't have all the options in the world,, but everything it has it is doing the best in the industry for the class, and that is the most important thing, not the list of things it can do, but how it can do it...
@ingaman
@ingaman 8 жыл бұрын
+lboymusic Because image sharpness isn't everything. A7S, A6300, and NX1 produce great looking images, but they're still consumer cameras.
@improver1849
@improver1849 8 жыл бұрын
Well, you get the Vari-ND filter. Frankly, any built in ND filters are just killer when shooting video. Especially if you have to do so quickly. NX1, NX500 don't have that. But I know what you mean... I bought a $500 NX500 a few months ago, and it has spoiled me. So small, so advanced.I like it so much, I'm going to buy the $900 16-50 S and $500 60mm macro new, despite it being a dead system. It's just that nice, that advanced. I could probably make a vlog with this thing that I wouldn't be embarrassed of, as the AF is almost dual pixel quality. I wish Samsung didn't drop out of the race. They would pushEd Sony to be ever more practical. No doubt many of the advances in the A6300 were due to pressure from Samsung, which is now sadly gone. Hopefully the A7R III is at least Nx1 quality
@improver1849
@improver1849 8 жыл бұрын
+ingaman You're right... but it's sad you gotta get a $16k C300 Mark II to get to near the level of AF & IQ the *(£*ing Samsungs have. It's crazy. I guess the 1DX II comes in and offers some relief.. but that's not a true video camera, either. No NDs built in, and a more arcane way of working that just a pure video camera, which for whatever reason, I find much easier to use. Gain makes more sense to me than ISO, etc. The cognitive load of using a video camera is just a lot lower (especially vs tweaking something like a GH4 for a particular scene, which is not exactly quick), and there's a lot of details that make sense. I rented a C300 Mark II for a weekend awhile back, and the thing was glorious. The only thing I didn't like was the file size. And the price... .. but at least Canon has good financing programs. I don't know how to deal with 400 hours of such huge files, though.

it's just deeply flawed, and i feel like there might be more scope with the fs5 in most situations. If you use the a7s correctly, yes it can produce great reslults, in low light sensitivity and grading the temperamental 8bit slog. Don't get my wrong, my personal video camera is the a7sii with a range of L lenses. but this can't be... it, for consumer cameras, can it??

Nah. There's KZbinrs using $50k Reds with $30k of supporting gear, and hundreds of dollars, if not thousands, spent daily on crew. They do great! Quality matters for certain type of content. For an every vlogger, though, sure a superb autofocusing 80d or 4K Samsung NX500 with their flip around screens would be just fine. Preferable in many ways, actually. Especially if you can't afford or talk people into being that can help with pulling focus, carrying the boom mic, etc. I adore cameras that basically have "crew" built in, from the two I just mentioned, all the way up to $16k C300 II. Now that camera is definitely one I can see richer KZbinrs using. It gives you a James Bond type look, without much skill whatsoever.
