From what I've learned at Canon workshops in Hollywood the proper exposure for middle gray is at 45 IRE when shooting Canon Log. Great review Max!
@avarmadillo7 жыл бұрын
Caleb, does that apply to both Clog 3 and Clog?
@CalebWojcik7 жыл бұрын
William Ridenour My notes say canon log & canon log 2. (3 wasn’t a thing yet when I attended.)
@avarmadillo7 жыл бұрын
That's really weird, because Clog II really is quite a bit flatter than Clog. Originally Clog was recommended to be exposed at about 35ire for middle gray, and 61 for white. But, of course, every camera's sensor is different. I exposed a close up of myself with the C200 with middle gray around 45%--and it turned out find and we easy to grade, and worked great with the Canon Clog 3 lUTS.
@Coops122417 жыл бұрын
Canon recommends the middle gray at 35-40 IRE but I would never do it. Through my own tests and reading an entire article by Shane Hurlbut, the optimal way to expose middle gray is 50-55 IRE. Skin tones pop really well, and the shadows are SIGNIFICANTLY less noisy. Highly recommend his write up, just google it!

Just a tip, did a number of tests shooting in Cinema Light Raw at different ISO's and IRE levels and the Raw footage is totally free of noise at ISO's lower than 400. I only mention this because like other cinema cameras i was instructed to keep the ISO at or around 800 for optimal dynamic range. From my experience any raw footage ive taken at ISO 500 or higher starts to get noisy. And yes aside from the Raw codec as Max Yuryev & Philip Bloom mentioned the 4K MP4 codec is a lot better than people think. Dont get caught up in the 8 bit vs 10 bit argument, the image quality is really quite beautiful so dont knock it till you try it.

Max, I just got my C200 yesterday, did some 8 bit tests and I'm really happy with the results. Skin tones look so much better with Canon's processing than Sony or Panasonic. I've really tried to like those cams, but the color always looks over processed--or something. Can't put my finger on the specifics--it just looks unnatural---not bad, but unnatural. But, and this goes for Canon, Sony, Pan, et al; the manuals of these companies uniformly SUCK! In contrast several reviews, including yours, have been very helpful----except on one issue: how to get the remote browser functioning. I've read the book and it's the most convoluted, incoherent bunch of garbage I've ever tried to make my way through. I've written three instruction books in my field, and one of the first remarks readers make is how clear they are, and how they make complicated things easy to understand. Am I a brilliant writer? No. I just sent particular sections to several different people of different backgrounds and kept rewriting taking their comments in mind, until the passages were clear to everyone. How hard is that? Canon obviously did nothing of the sort. Indexes are horrible, nomenclature is weird---printing is cheap. It's like the people who wrote the book, formatted text, and made the index took an enormous hit of microdot acid before they started. Enough!! Any suggestions on how to present the remote browser issue so it makes sense and works? I've done remote browsers for Panni and Sony with reasonable results---but this totally sucks Canon! And while they're at it they need to hire someone who knows how to write clearly, make a decent index, and organize the manual so it actually makes sense!

Nice review Max, I agree with you, the C200 is solid, but a few corrections? 1. The Delkin card you linked to is not rated at VPG-130, therefore there is a good chance of buffer overrun failure with the C200. Use the EgoDisk 256GB cards that sell for $299.00 on Amazon. They are rated VPG-130, we have half a dozen of them and they have been flawless and problem free for six months. 2. A 256GB Ego Disk CFast 2.0 card will give you 34 minutes of 4K Cinema RAW Light. For $299.00 for 34 minutes, this is totally acceptable for pro users. 3. The proxies that the C200 records are ONLY 35Mbps 2k, not 1080, they have the same 17:9 aspect ratio that the DCI 4K Cinema RAW Light files have. They do not have the same naming convention but both the 2K proxies and the Cinema RAW Light files can be named the same once you download them, this makes using them and then re-conforming using the RAW files much easier in post. And ANY computer can handle 35Mbps 2k whereas, you are right, you need some heavy processing and GPU power to handle Cinema RAW Light. We are cutting two feature documentaries with the 2K proxies and will only re-conform to the Cinema RAW Light files once we have locked picture. 4. Your examples do not show the advantages of Cinema RAW Light, it's just the way you shot them. I highly suggest checking out Crimson Engine's C200 comparison videos on KZbin, you can see a distinct difference in sharpness and color vibrancy between C200 .MP4, Prores he recorded externally and the Cinema RAW Light. I understand you didn't see a considerable difference but if you shoot some carefully lit interview/talking heads, you should see a noticeable difference, I know I do. 5. Did you try boosting the luminance setting higher as well as brightness when trying to use the touchscreen outdoors? In your footage above, the luminance is set to "normal". I add a Hoodman H400 and with the boosted luminance, brightness and the hood, it's somewhat usable in bright sunlight although reflections can be difficult. Keep up the good work, your videos are great.
@luxiaproductions7 жыл бұрын
It's actually not a 1:1 4k image, because it is a Bayer pattern, canon can advertise the "effective" 8.9MP, but in reality its a 2k in Blue, 2k in Red, and 4k in Green, then the camera De-Mosaics/de-bayers the image to produce 4k output, but almost all cinema cameras do this for larger photosites and better low light.(Arri Alexa, Red Weapon, Sony F55)

Does the EVA1 give you 1:1 4K because of it's 5.7K sensor?

Thanks Max, great review - only thing I'd pick up on is 15 stops DR only achievable in raw in post production, using Canon Cinema Raw Development software, by changing gamma from C-log3 to c-log2. The reason you state MP4 and Raw look the same in DR is because they are the same, both C-log3. All the best, Jon

@dennisolof99947 жыл бұрын
Great points about auto focus, that some people seem to hate. One downside that is obvious in most expensive cameras with RAW is the lack of storage space and speed, if they included a M2 SSD card slot 42, 60, 80 and 110 mm for that it would be great. No storage limitations or issues with slow speeds. Fast SD-Cards are great but they are still a bit slow for real high end stuff. If you use external recorder this is, of course not a issues. Great video max.

Really good review Max, Thanks for putting so much work into it. I appreciate it. I have been a lifelong Canon user, and I own a C300, and 5D Mark IV...but I was disappointed with this camera, so I bought the EVA1 to future proof my purchase. I miss the Canon autofocus terribly, I won't lie. I think you should have talked a bit about what one can get if they hook up this camera to a shogun Inferno or Ninja Inferno, because that changes the game. Also, since the title reads MY FAVORITE CINEMA CAMERA, the comparison should have been with EVA1 and maybe an Ursa Mini. I would like to hear your thoughts on if you used a Shogun Inferno with this or not, and what you found, good and bad. In my opinion, once you record to an Inferno, you don't have to worry about MP4 format, and you can record in ProRes or DNxHD. When in doubt, I use ProRes422 for a good balance of size and quality. I would like to hear your thoughts. Either way, I appreciate the hard work you put into this. Great job.

Great review Max! Two questions: 1. Can you use both the LCD screen & SmallHD Focus (or another external monitor or recorder) simulteanously? (for having the ease of touch focus & better viewing at the same time, mostly for run&gun). 2. Can you record 4k 50p mp4 & FullHD 120p simulteanously (either internally on the dual sd OR sd & external recorder) ??? Thanks alot!
@JamesJacksonFilmz6 жыл бұрын
Don't Know if you ever got this answered but, 1) Yes you can connect both the LCD screen and the Small HD focus simultaneously. You can't however send a signal out both the HDMI and SDI simultaneously (I.E. 2 external Monitors). 2) No You can't record 4K 50p and 2K 120p simultaneously. You have to manually decide which frame rate and resolution you want to shoot at. And I'm not sure there's any camera where you can do that at least not sub $10K

Great video and very capable camera despite its odd limitations! Just a question I hope you would like to answer. I'm considering to have a dedicated video camera and this is on the top list, but its age and the lack of 10 bit 422 could be annoying (in case the production would ask me for it, shooting and converting the raw footage wouldn't be exactly a practical walk around for me). I've heard of a firmare update in 2019 that had to add this feature, but till now I got no news about it (...) All in all, what do you think to chose this camera in 2020? As far as you know is there any serious rumor about a new model coming soon after the 500 mk II has been presented couple of months ago? In case non of them are on the way, would you suggest me to consider more the Panasonic Eva instead? Thanks a lot for your reply and the helpful video ;)

Thanks Max for the great videos. I need your advice. I like ursa mini pro 4.6k very much but am torn between UMP, c200 and fs7 1. UMP looks great for price, features, codecs, video quality, dual cfast to dual ssd recording, etc but it's not very good in low light and autofocusing but then narrative films need manual focus and lightings but for event and run and gun work c200/fs7 1 seems great, but no prores 10 bit 422 internally and no 2 cfast for backup in c200 which doesn't justify it over UMP or fs7 1. I still think UMP might be good for both events and narrative films for its price/features etc. What do you think please? Thanks & Regards.

I've even gotten over the lack of 10 bit recording and was willing to forgive it for that. But man, the image out of the URSA is just so much better imo. Way more detailed and much better dynamic range. The usuable dynamic range i get shooting prores on the Ursa is better than the raw from the C200.

I used the fs5 for a while, mostly for stability as i did not like the image very much, but with the shogun inferno it becomes a whole new camera. The ability to shoot raw or prores is great, and the bust mode of 120 fps 4k raw looks amazing! oh and with my speedbooster it get a fantastic full frame look to use with canons great glass. I miss the auto focus for some things but it looks great and the variable ND is a god send. Just wondering if you have tried what i would consider the biggest rival for the c200 ?

I did a twilight shoot with the c200 and a second camera that was the Ursa Mini 4.6k set for 4k Prores 10 bit 444. The UM video displayed fixed pattern noise or cross-hatching that could not be removed and required darkening the image to try to hide it. The C200 4k 8bit 420 mp4 video looked better. It seems that the UM is very limited by its need for plenty of light.
@1deloach7 жыл бұрын
Well, yes. But I always light my shoots. We have never seen FPN or CH. Under properly lit scenarios, the URSA kills the C200. If I did run and gun work, yea, the C200 would be a wiser choice. But, I am not a run and gun shooter.

The comparisons you make seem a little canon biased to me.. Why do you compare the dynamic range with the Panasonic GH5 and the Sony A6500 while both are not cinema camera's and the C200 is? Both GH5 and the Sony A6500 are almost one third of the price of the C200 (body only) and also do not have a comparable sensor size to the C200. An honest comparison would be with EVA1 from panasonic and the FS5 or FS7 from Sony.
@MaksimYuryev7 жыл бұрын
Jos van der Donk I would have liked to but couldn’t get an eva1 while I had the c200. I compared it to the mirrorless hybrids since that’s what I use and what much of my audience uses.

Thanks for your reply max! I understand that you also make a comparison to the mirrorless camera's, since they are popular and it is valuable to know whether the investment in a cinema camera is worth it. However, your video is titled 'My FAVORITE Cinema Camera'... How can you claim that when you don't compare it with other Cinema Camera's? I feel you should have waited with posting this video until you tried the EVA1 and FS5/7 or left the comparisons out just covering how the specs perform in reality.

The downside is the 1 CFast card slot, they will get full in the middle of your shoot and you have to stop the crew to switch the card, NOT GOOD! Not Good, also if you are not shooting raw, you cant get 10 bit 422, NOT good for a $7500 Camera.

I think 10bit must be an american standard. Broadcast here in manila are ok with 8 bit.

I'd like to get some samples :) Even if I can't afford it. 6 months ago I downloaded some samples but on resolve I had a lot more artefacts than a GH5's footage.
