Just take the Barry Sanders approach to scoring a touchdown...no fancy celebrations, just hang on to the ball and casually hand it back to the ref. You can't go wrong with that!
@cardinalRGАй бұрын
Very well said, and Sanders is a great example of composure and sportsmanship. In the 1988 Holiday Bow, he handed or tossed the ball to the referee after every one of his five touchdowns. In one instance, the referee dropped the ball, and Sanders bent down and retrieved it, and then handed it to the referee a second time! It was also a perfect illustration of the fact that the best players don't need to call attention to themselves, because their performances speak for themselves. Everyone knew that Sanders was the best player on the field, but you'd never have heard that from him, nor seen him showboating.
@MichaelClifford-w2tАй бұрын
That would have been his first career touchdown, too. I would have run through the back of the end zone still holding onto the ball.

He celebrated a touchdown against Dallas prematurely by flipping the football behind him at the 1-yard line before he got into the end zone."
@TheSpicyLeg3 күн бұрын
Jackson was lucky though. He fumbled backwards and the ball sat at the 1 yard line without any Cowboys player touching it. So while Jackson lost the TD, Philadelphia retained possession with a first and goal. Fumbling it out of the end zone is much worse, not only was the touchdown reversed, but the New Jersey Jets lost possession too.

How did no one on the field or on the Texas sidelines seem to notice it when it happened? There were like 5 Texas players chasing him when he dropped the ball. Did none of them think that just maybe he dropped it a little early?
@steveaustin268613 күн бұрын
It rolled onto the back line, so was considered a touchback, Texans ball. If it had stopped before the back line and no one touched it, the Jets would get it on the 1. So whenever someone drops a ball in the endzone near the goalline, the defense should pick it up just in case.

1:10 isn't clear enough? the ball is rotating like a turd coming out his ass at the half yard mark between 1 and goal line. It's basically 'fumbled' at that point, loss of possession starts there.
@RandytheTechGuy-so4uyАй бұрын
This is stupid when it happens in college. This is monumentally idiotic in the pros.
@cardinalRGАй бұрын
So long as showboating thrives, we'll see this kind of idiocy. In my view, it's not an execution error, but one that stems from the urge to showboat in the first place. The solution is simple, but no team has the guts to implement it: hand the ball to the referee after scoring, every time. This used to be taught to players, back when composure and sportsmanship were emphasized.

Actually him being a rookie is the main reason this should never have happened. Being a rookie means you play the game the way it should be played, and not acting like a fool looking for internet views. One thing is to have someone run into you and cause a fumble, or you run a route incorrectly because you're still learning the playbook. But for the simple act of carrying the ball into the end zone when no one touched him, that should never have happened.
