I was fortunate, as a young person in high school, to go to a concert by the entire Romero Family - Celedonio Romero, the father, and the three sons, Celin, Angel, and Pepe. To say they blew me away was an understatement. I have always been a fan of guitar, and that concert, even today when I'm over 70, is still a razor sharp memory and literal highlight of my entire life.
@pedro21011 Жыл бұрын
I also met the family when they gave a concert at the university that I was attending. I had a chance at the end of the concert to have a chat with Pepe, and got a few pointers from him as a beginning guitarist. And now I'm 80. Where did the time go? I still play the guitar, but not as well as when I was younger.

I met him, his father and his brother at a concert in st louis in the late 80s, the three of them played as a trio. You talk about the most beautiful guitar sound imaginable in a concert hall with all that ambiant natural reverb....amazing. I worked as an usher so I got to meet them after their performance,and enjoy some wine and cheese. Was great night.

OMG @donstanley9943 I was at that concert in the late 80's in St. Louis and got to meet Pepe, father, Angel and Celin. My dad snuck is in the backway during intermission (maybe past you, lol) and we snuck up the stairway to their dressing room. We had the program and my dad asked them for their father for his autograph. The father proudly turned over his guitar he was playing and signed the program and then gave the program to Celin, then Pepe signed. We had missed Angel as he was in the bathroom but as he was coming back, my dad stopped him in the hallway complimenting him about a PBS performance he did and got all four autographs. I still have the tickets and autographed program framed!!!!

Malaguena is iconic and is a Flamenco rhythm as much as a composition. The famous version by Los Romeros as a quartet is also iconic, and a crowd pleasing standard. After playing this piece for so many years, it is refreshing to hear Pepe's father's composition in a variation for fans that have heard the same piece before. Spanish music is meant to contemporary to the moment. The audience on Bogota had heard the original version, and were open to a new version. Bravo!

By that logic you will never do anything, since there will always be someone who dedicates an extreme amount of time to becoming a master at anything you could choose to do. Better off doing it anyway and getting some enjoyment out of it. You could even become a master yourself, but not if you don’t try.

I used to play guitar when I was a kid but I have abnormally small hands and I don’t have any fingernails since I bite them. I was just stuck at a beginner/intermediate level. I quit, and I wish I didn’t. I don’t think I could ever be a master guitarist which is fine. But I just listen to this as music now, whereas I wish I could listen to it with a little more technical knowledge.
