The heel leads on the backswing. The heel leads on the downswing. I've been rolling the club open on the backswing and flipping my hands through the hitting zone for my entire life. This is the most impactful golf video I've ever watched. For the first time in my life I'm seeing the pros swing and understand the transition from the backswing to the downswing. Tried it on the range today and it was like a miracle.

This one video changed my LIFE! Thank you for taking the stronger grip off the "Most Wanted List". It's simply amazing how much MORE control of the clubface is imparted by seeing a couple more knuckles. This combined with "Closed / Open" swing thought is a game changer for me. Everyone is unique, but I've been struggling with over the top for years as I dip back into regular playing; probably since my hands are rotated on the backswing, and I'm subconsciously trying to square them coming down. This caused all sorts of compensations (Saviors) - hips dropping / moving back; or worse freezing so my hands could get in position; arms pulling inward; hands turning over; or not. You name it, I was doing it. The result would be a few practice sessions or rounds and my back was KILLING; Why? because all these compensations were stopping me from properly turning. There was no "freedom" in my swing; it felt manufactured. Something as simple as a grip, and tempo changed my whole approach to the swing. I was a good player 20 years ago, but was in the shape and ability to have very "fast" hands. However, I'm now re-thinking that I could have been much better if I approached the grip, and clubface rotation in a more natural way. The baseball pitching and basketball shot analogies are GOLD, and make perfect sense. Thank you!!

I live in South Africa and my golf instructor says that Mike Malaska is a genius. After decades of playing this game and hundreds of hours of video watching, I was still left with so much frustration. I decided to go for lessons and luckily found an instructor who taught me “The Malaska Move”. This is has become for me, by far the most effective way of swinging a club. So simple to learn and the contact and distance I’m now getting is startling, but the best thing of all is that it’s so consistent. It really is game changing stuff
@frederickcharette4362 жыл бұрын
wow. listened to it this morning before the weekly Sturday comp. 53-y old, 6 hdcp in Australia, member of a club, play once a week basically. Pro I’ve been working with locally improved my “hip turn” and my swing plane (with a flatter/more bowed wrist). But the key is the strong lead hand with the right hand “hitting down” on the ball rather than “rotating through”. Today, massive difference on my wedges and short irons in particular, and the driver, much less effort, same or more distance, and straighter balls. I feel I just added 10 years of playing at this level or better because it was so much easier to hit the ball solid… thanks Mike, most grateful.

Not that my comment is needed here, but I used to play at a pretty high level (hdcp 1.4). But I really needed to get practiced up in order to play that well. All of that roll release is hard to master, especially, at least for me, unless you practice a LOT. This explanation from Mike is just gold. Neutral grip vs. that super weak grip I have played forever. Thanks Mike!

I discovered this for myself whilst experimenting on the driving range. I suddenly started hitting the ball further and straighter and with consistency. I convinced myself that because I’d come upon this myself it must be wrong despite the evidence that it worked. This video has validated what I have been doing , so thank you. The chances are that I would have discarded the method despite the results in favour of something I’d been ‘taught’. I wonder how many people do the same. Thanks again.

I have played like this for a long time. If you couple this with the Malaska move, it is magic. I remember when that hack AJ Bonar was selling his system on TV and he advocated rolling the hands on the backswing and then on the downswing. He even had a club he sold that had a little bat on the end where you were supposed to swing the little bat on the end by turning your hands. I thought this idea was crazy and I could not figure out how you would control where the ball was going. So glad I found Malaska before I listened to someone like AJ. This video is great and I come back here often to watch it.

Great Video. I've too have been playing with face rotation forever, and I can't stand the inconsistency. The analogy given of "10 holes of scratch golf.....3 holes like a 10-12 handicap".....is absolutely spot on. I have been working on this drill in my back yard and my clubhead speed is actually faster, along with a better ball flight. I do tend to miss left, like this golfer, at times when i'm trying to throw versus roll. More practice is needed as old habits die hard, but I greatly enjoyed this video as it applied directly to my inconsistency.

I'm a follower of the mike Austin swing. And the right arm is a throwing action . You honestly don't need a strong grip for this to work . I hit dead straight 7 irons 180 yards at 80 percent swing. If both of your hands are flipping in the same direction then you are keeping the club square to your target. If you figure out what your hands do in the swing you figure half of the golf swing. Great video on the hand action though. Who ever say the hands don't have anything to do with the golf swing will always hit there 7 iron 150 yards on a good day lol.

I converted to this release last year, after a lifetime of insanity, and my handicap went from 12 to 4 almost immediately (with some wedge practice). I personally don't think you need that strong of a left-hand grip to do this, just get it on there comfortable, and then just concentrate on getting the right hand and wrist to work how shown here. I also converted to Midsized +4 grips and went 10-finger, all at once, and as a former tennis player, all of the above was life-changing. Trust me, give it a try.

How's your game are you still releasing the club this way
@wallstreetoneil2 жыл бұрын
@@johno-gb7ci yes - in fact, now a year on, I have a much better understanding of what is happening. If you take a 'normal' 'perfect' Adam Scott modern textbook type swing on one end, and then Matt Wolff's very toe-down, out to in, looping tennis forehand swing as the other end, and then somewhere in the middle being Morikawa/Hovland swing being more toe down, more vertical, more drop inside in transition, with the right hand being delivered similar if not identical to what Mike teaches, and historically how Trevino hit the ball, then I'm somewhere close to this but also have a tiny bit more Matt Wolff, in that having been a very competitive tennis player as a youth, my neurons formed feeling Wolff'ish so I feel I take the club straight back, without opening it at all, but not outside like Matt Wolff, but it would be shut/toe-down way more than Adam Scott, and then I just slightly drop it inside at the top in transition, my elbow fires generating the whiping/lag speed move that tennis players and baseball pitchers do, and then I feel like I'm just hitting a topspin tennis forhand with the wrist moving basically like Mike teaches - there is absolutely no forearm rolling. If you want to see what I mean, at least in a small way, look at the slow motion of a top tennis player hitting a topspin forehand, and watch the elbow action, you can see DJ doing the same thing in his swing.

The tuition on the correct hold is fantastic. A great test to check the hold is correct is to take hold in lead hand only , then as you apply force into the arm as in if at impact (lengthen arm) see if the club face now rotates from its starting position! Immediate feedback makes you aware if correct hold with lead hand.

Just listen to Malaska. I finally understood golf watching Malaska videos 👉Hands down and club head out. At transition, after weight on left side, the arms and upper body will move down a bit naturally as a single unit. That first movement will let your chest to be pointing more parallel to the ground. Then, you can bring the hands down and club head out. And do extend your right arm ( just enough for impact position) and that will be responsible for that solid contact effortlessly. As you are extending the right arm, you will take your left hip out of the way. That's it.

Quick question: The golf club shaft is a cylinder, what isn't the golf shaft a square shape then like a hockey stick? As an engineer, the cylinder wants to rotate, so why don't we make the golf shaft a square? I've always been curious about this manufacturing detail. I also note that the clubhead is offset from the axis of the cylinder, so it means that the clubhead will also make alot of angular momentum in the swing. Where does this energy go? Appreciate your input on this mechanic conundrum

I've played golf 30 years and recently found out I had a fundamental misunderstanding of how a golf club works. When the club 'tumbles' out towards ball in the lower half of the downswing, u crush it with a tenth of the effort of trying to muscle it using linear force. Mike is showing how the club tumbles outwards. Very hard to explain, but once you've felt it, u realise you've been doing wrong all the years. You KNOW exactly where the ball is going as soon as you start your move. Shaping shots becomes a joy and a whole world of options opens up to u when you learn how to the tool works.

Mike this is perfect - 1 word of advice though - when you have the player take a swing (Don't talk while they're swinging it distracts them from the task) lol I could tell in this video, he was trying to think/be mindful of what you were telling him prior, then trying to apply that to concentrate on the current swing. When you try talking during their swing, the person can only/either focus on the task, or what you're currently speaking to him while he's trying it out. Pause the talking/coaching and let them concentrate/complete the swing first so they have time to process what you're telling them. Other than that - this was an awesome lesson.

Mike doesn’t seem to push a lot of face rotation. I’m a bit concerned about the massive strong 💪 left hand grip if anyone has gone more neutral please let me know. I’m guessing the strong left hand grip keeps the club from rotating too much. On the way back it appears all Mike wants is to get the right hand, arm position to throw underneath??? Is this right? A "flip" or the negative connation of a flip is when a golfer is reacting to an open clubface. They recruit their body (early extension) and hands (flip) in an effort to close the clubface late(from a wide open position). Good players have the face in a 'closed/square' position before the release interval so they can release (extend wrist) later. I know you probably know this but just wanted to put it out there. Most high handicappers play from a wide open club face position so they need to fix that first.

Mike, this is great information and definitely what I need to help my consistency. Typically, I don’t try to play a straight shot. I try to fade or draw nearly all my shots, whether into a green or onto the fairway. The problem is I use my hands to turn over the ball or block the turnover plus an inside out or outside in swing path to accomplish this. As you can imagine, I’m not playing a 5 yard draw or fade. It’s a 25 yard or more shot and inconsistent. Would you please do a video on appropriate ways to shape shots with a consistent swing? Background: I played golf high school and as a hobby in college and short time after (‘92 - ‘04). At one time was a 4 handicap. When I began working, I couldn’t afford to play and took a 15 year break. I am now back into it and back down to a 9.5 but not getting better. I need consistency. Thanks again for posting these vids.

So my question is this, is the right hand active or passive? In other words am I throwing the right hand through the hitting area as hard as I can for a swing affect, or is the right hand just cocking the club and then releasing you square with momentum and then flexing after release?

Mind blown.. you constantly hammer club face control. But I’ve felt that I get more club speed with the club face rotation. It’s helped a lot with speed but the miss is loss of compression.. and my short irons and wedges over draw. Now I know why. Thank you!!! Lots of range time needed though .

How does swinging this way, which I like the thought, compare to L to L? There is a lot more rotation in the L to L.

Can someone please explain the closed to open concept? I’m not sure I’m grasping that release. Thanks you!

The clubface ‘is’ the palm of the right hand. In the takeaway/backswing the clubface is more Iooking down at the ground. So not rolling clockwise or ‘open’. In the follow through the palm/clubface is looking more to the sky. In short: the clubface is on target longer with much less rolling of the wrist. Hence backswing closed, release open (relative to the swingplane that is). Hmm, many words, hope this helps!

@@MrEasyaloha first I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to answer. Your answer was very helpful, my mental image of what is considered open was different. Your description was spot on and makes sense. Thank you!

Well coached explanations kept to a minimum as I come to expect from Mike . An obvious thought I would think for him and maybe most is the first move is arms sideways relative to you ,or perpendicular to your stance . Then what ? Well again obvious to most but not me , l have to think to keep this going my mind has to transition from hitting the ball standing vertically[ chipping ,putting] to the next angle of attack which is again sideways relative to the body but sure changes relative to the target as l turn . The angles only work if the task is right , a mental block after your initial move probably a bad task . Cheers Mike .

Does this apply to longer clubs/shafts? I feel the flatter swing still feels like a roll.

Is this the release pattern for both draw and fade?

Is this the same release pattern you should do during the L to L drill?

Hi Mike, at the end of the video you said you'd show him how to do this with wedges. Did you post that video?
