Malayalam Pronunciation: ര , റ, ർ , ഴ (R Sounds)

In this video, we'll look closely at the different " R " sounds in Malayalam. Note that linguistically /zha/ is categorized more as an " l " sound, and is represented in ISO transliteration as ḻa , but I wanted to put it in this video as English speakers tend to perceive it more like an " r " sound.

True, ഴ has always sounded like a retroflex american R to me as well. Generally people write it as 'zha' and the ipa represents it as a form of L but neither makes sense to me lol.

for the last one, "rock'n'roll" seems like a good english word that has a close enough sound.

haha, this reminds me of an episode of "be cool, scooby-doo!" with a elder, sage person the gang meets in a cave named "rick". he introduces himself, they call him back, he says that it's not his name, and they try so hard to say "rick" correctly. and he says "not even close". 😂

@@Learn-Malayalam I would ask a non Western Chinese speaker for their interpretation. Who knows, it might be a unique sound closer to something else for them.

​​@@Learn-Malayalam Eli, what's the diff between റ and ri vowel of Malayalam? I find them the same (almost) as a native speaker of an Indo-Aryan language.
