As I write this, I have in front of me a parang ~15" long, and a sheath carved from wood and bound with twisted wire. On it is written "UNGAT IBAN LL", given to me by the man who made it especially for me. He also gave a much bigger one to my father, and another to the Duchess of Kent.

Correction goodsir, we gained independence in 1957. But I concur wholeheartedly on everything. Templer was undoubtedly quite methodical in removing the communist threat. The forced re-settlements were indeed not looked upon favorably but over time eventually became an accepted fact of life. Most importantly, to Templer's legacy were his efforts to obtain citizenship for the non-Malays (a pragmatic move) but nonetheless paved the way to the future of our beloved nation.
@ColinElliott-nx4rk
@ColinElliott-nx4rk 3 ай бұрын
I remember Templer's residence on the hill, because I was invited to it for his son's birthday party. My father was CO of RWK at KKB, while we lived off the Ampang Road in KL. He used to come home regularly, unarmed and accompanied only by driver and batman, while my mother, sister and I would occasionally visit him, driving several miles through the jungle, and the occasional checkpoint where our car was searched for food. Tanjun Malung is a name I remember well from that time, because of the unnecessary deaths; the CTs , or 'bandits') cut the water supply, and set an ambush. The engineers stupidly set off to repair it without informing the authorities, who would undoubtedly have realised the cause and taken advantage to surround the area with ambushes. Otherwise, it all seemed very peaceful to me. Although prepared to murder, the CTs weren't as violent or vicious as insurgents in other parts of the world, and never had a large quantity of weapons, which had been given them during the war, or were stolen.

My grandfather served in the Malaya army during communist war era in the 50's . I never met him entire my life because he passed away before i was born. My grandmother said to me that there were harsh times during the Malaya Emergency and she said he get shot at the leg during combat in the jungle. She always told me stories about him and show me his picture when he served in the army. My grandpa get slapped in the face when he was in teenage years during WW2 by Japanese soldier for helping British POW giving them food. That triggered him to served in the army from that day.

I heard this from my old history teacher in the 70s. After the communists ambushed and killed a team of men send out to repair the water works in Tanjung Malim, Gen Templar went and gathered all the town folks in a hall and gave a speech complaining, threatening them about the lack of info and co operation from them to help fight the enenmy. "....and if you folks think you are bastards, I will be the bigger bastard!!!" The translator was shocked but Gen said, "Go ahead and translate..." Stunned, the translator cautiously said, "The General said that all your parents were not married when you were born..." The town folks went silent and shocked.... Then, the translator cheerfully continued, "But the Gen also said that his parents were not married when he was born too!..." (I am not sure if this was a joke but apparently, it did happened). Hahaha.

My dad fought the communists in the 50s@Police Inspector(RMP) Jungle Squad Frontier Force. Heard many of his battle encounters in Kinta area & his high regards of his British superiors, Manchester Regiment, Gurkhas & Aussies who joint operations against the CPM. Thus, my salute & grattitude to these Commonwealth countries, especially the British who were instrumental in helping Malaya to be a democratic nation today. ❤🙏R.I.P. for these Commonwealth soldiers who perished in this war.

My friend, a slight nuance... Malaya WAS NEVER 'owned' by the British - it was ALWAYS explicitly the property of the Sultans, who, seeing some value in the more enlightened aspects of Great Britain (as it was in the past) agreed to allow the British of the time to develop various things for a kind of mutual benefit and to administer and govern WITH THE ASCENT of the co-operative council of sultans (the Tunku structure, I suppose, you might say). Britain never 'invaded' Malaya, nor 'conquered' it, nor pressed it into Empire by force, to have it be part of the British Commonwealth of Nations -, and further remembering, that it was NOT 'United Kingdom' people who established things in the first place such as rubber estates and pineapple and tea plantations, but Indians, and Chinese, and staggeringly wealthy 'old Kingdom' Stuarts - who were there because of their ownership of the fastest fleets of ships-at-sea from the days of sail. And with respect to the seafaring aspect, Malaya already itself had a long history of its own sailors and seaman and sea captains and thus of international trading and all of the underlying industry entailed including certainly fishing of course as well. ...I know many United Kingdom people would like to think in this case they 'gave' independence, but what they did was retire from presuming continuing control after WWII, and to 'let' the local people establish their own complete self-government. Short of 'nationalizing' rubber estates and so on (which essentially were in private hands anyway) there was no realistic economic or feasible political way to maintain a grip on a post-War Malaya. Not unless you wanted to act like overt dictators... ...which Mr Lee, of course, had no qualms in doing. One thing that cannot go unsaid about the 'Marxist' Communist situation, was that Chin Peng was acknowledged as an honorable man, and as a formidable leader or 'foe,' opponent or whatever you want to say and that the 'winning' of this contest goes down in military and political history books as worthy of important study. Time of course changes how we may consider all things 'in the now' but those who lived in this particular past, be it that they were on either side, were a significant cut above the crew of all 'sides' who make the news media today - but then again, the best still is in human beings everywhere even though it appears to lie dormant for the moment.
