@@riey1degreat557 Malaya and Malaysia not the same. Most of the photos being from 1900-1920, during this period, it would be British Malaya. And as the photos are mostly in Penang, that is part of the Straits Settlements.

That photographs of chinese boys watching puppet show in front of a temple (the temple is till there today) and a chinese man pulling his children on a pullcart rickshaw was taken in Kuching, Sarawak Borneo. There was no Malaysia before The 1963 Malaysian Agreement. Do your reasearch before uploading.

Actually, if you think about it, Malasyia makes much more sense. Because "y" is never a vowel in the local language, and it is never an ending consonant in a syllable, so "lay" is impossible to pronounce.

You have to face the facts. Phonetically, the spelling of Malaysia makes no sense in Malay. The word cannot be pronounced because "y" is never pronounced as a vowel, and it also never occurs as a terminating consonant. So "lay" cannot be read, unless you resorted to reading it the English way. The proper way to spell the country's name is Malasyia, or even better Meleishia.

At that time they don't have flushing toilets, shower facilities and hygiene was very bad. So stop romanticizing the past. Modern day Penang is comfortable with good standard of living and Malaysian has independence from the British, the colonizer.

Mrs Ponse is the wife of Mr Ponse. 😁 Maybe you want to know more than that. OK. I can do better. Mrs Ponse is Cornelia Catharina Alberda (1862-1947), married to Johannes Theodoor Ponse (1862-1908). J.Th was born in Semarang, Indonesia (then the Dutch East Indies). He doesn't appear in the photos because somebody has got to take the photos! The way photos were taken in 1901, you can't just set a timer and then get in the photo yourself. Cameras back then didn't work that way. Most of these photos were probably taken from Wikimedia commons. If you search, you'll see them. They came from the Tropenmuseum (Tropical Museum) in the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam (World Museum Amsterdam). Mrs Ponse is the mother of Kitty Ponse, a somewhat famous zoologist, endocrinologist, and professor. Kitty was a baby in 1901 and appeared in some of the photos in the collection. The Ponse family left the Dutch East Indies in 1902 and return to Europe, settling in Geneva Switzerland. I know their names and when they lived because J.Th and Cornelia's great grandson (Dr) Alban Ponse maintains several websites. Dr Ponse was a theoretical computer scientist at the University of Amsterdam, who's since retired, and is now a guest researcher at the same place.

@@nsaffini1975 the place is now part of Malaysia. But Malaysia did not exist in 1901. Penang was part of the British Empire that still encircled the globe at the time. Specifically, Penang was part of the Straits Settlements, which was part of British Malaya. However, before WW2, British Malaya was not place under a unified administration. The Straits Settlements was a crown colony, and placed directly under the colonial office in London. Before that it was administered via the India office.
