I am malaysian. Merdeka 118 was built to house pnb's hq. Similar to the twin towers being hq for Petronas. None was built for pride nor vanity. While we have not began two more mega towers, tower M and trade wind tower, we build mega talls to reduce urban spread as well. So no more mega talls for now.

Definitely not a vanity project. Merdeka 118 is built to house the PNB HQ (just like the Petronas Twin Towers was built to house the fully government owned Petronas HQ). Fyi, PNB is an investment management company also fully owned by the Malaysian government, and us the local citizens of Malaysia have our shares invested here.

Construction in KL is completely chaotic, everything is wildly mixed up. When I first came to the city (1999) you could see the Twin Towers and Menara KL from any point in the city for orientation. There is a reason why Jakarta can't build any megatall building. 1, Jakarta is sinking. 2, Jakarta is part of the Pacific Rim of Fire. Even if Jakarta can scrape the money and assign the land to build it, it's physically not possible.
