Malaysia Musang King Durian. Evaluation between Price and Quality

Musang King durian or Mao Shan Wang (猫山王) is sold at various price points. We wanted to find out the reasons, and decided to check-out the Musang King Durian variety that is grown in Bukit Tinggi, Selangor.
This store claimed they have a variety of Musang King durian, sourced from highland and aged around 30 years. They sell Musang King in three price points.
RM38 per kilogram - small fruit from old tree
RM48 per kilogram - big fruit from young tree
RM68 per kilogram - big fruit from old trees from highlands.
We learned from the seller that the relative pricing of Musang King is dependent largely on three factors:
1. Age of the tree. Old tree fetches higher price
2. Grown on highland or lowland. Highland durian fetches higher price.
3. Size of fruits - bigger fruits are priced higher on per kilogram basis.
We have decided to evaluate another variety. Durian Kampung. They are priced less than half of the lowest price of Musang King variety on per kilogram basis. Durian kampung is a good option if you want to go for volume, and with reasonable quality in relation to price.
Here’s our verdict based on our preference. At our age, we tend to eat lesser in volume….. so we tend to go for quality, instead of quantity.
1. We will go for durians from old trees with creamier texture, and they taste like cream cheese. Other than that, old trees come with thinner husk. They are more expensive, but the husk is lighter as well.
2. We will go for fruits grown on highland as the taste is more intense. We prefer the bitter variety, rather than sweet.
3. Fruit size. Larger fruits are priced higher. We have not studied the relationship between size of fruit and pricing, and perhaps we would do that another time. We would go for smaller fruit at lower price, as instinctively we felt the smaller fruit gives better value. The smaller RM38 grade is a good as the RM68 grade.

Grey husk generally from highland, not 100% confirm, but the market just brand it in such way. The colour of husk also affected by sunshine and fertilizer.

Kampung means "village" in Malay, and it is commonly referred as a generic name to the durian variety without any identification compared to modern durian variety that was cross breed and with appropriate names.

And because of that Kampung variety fetches a much lower price, but then again there are some kampung variety that are really good and with small seeds as well.

Thanks for the compliment. This is a random stall that we visited in Bukit Tinggi, Janda Baik a few doors away from a popular restaurant named "126". Anyway, the intention of this video is to explore the different price points Musang King and variety versus quality. There are many stalls everywhere that sells durians. Cheers.

Hello. When it comes to premium durian varieties like Musang King and Orchee @ Black Thorn, grades and prices are determined by Age of tree Size Shape Location The standard grades are A grade: weighs 1.6 to 3kg, well rounded shape which has more pulps in every segment and no defects on the husk. Perfect for export. B grade: weighs 1kg and above with a slightly odd shape, thus has less pulps inside compared to A grade C grade: small/mini size MK weighs less than 1kg or bigger size like A and B grades but with defects like worm hole and cracks
