First, Malaysia facilitated the negotiation with MNLF (under Nur Misuari) and resulted in the formation of ARMM (Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao). Nur Misuari was appointed as the first Governor for 1 term; next governor should be through election. But Nur Misuari blew it because he wanted to be the governor for life. Next, another negotiation and agreement facilitated by Malaysia again, with MILF and resulted in the formation of BARMM (Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao) which is still in existence until today. Without Sabah of course.
