A new EU regulation aims to ban the import of several products, including palm oil, that come from plantations linked to deforestation. While the bloc hails the law as an important way to protect the world's forests, Southeast Asian countries say it threatens their livelihoods and is difficult to implement. Malaysia is one the world's top palm oil producers and farmers there are worried they could lose out on earnings. Our team reports from the island of Borneo.

Not all palm oil produced in malaysia subject to eudr rules. Most of palm oil estates in malaysia was established before 2020 and doesnt subject to eudr rules.we could easily segregates rhe palm oil production falls to eudr rules and vice versa. Thus we still could sell palm oil planted since 50 years ago to eu and the palm oil planted after 2020 to non eu market. We are wiser in that sense 💪💪💪 To simplify further, palm oil produced in peninsular malaysia mostly will not subject to eudr whilst in borneo will be subject to eudr. But every single drop of palm oil in malaysia is properly audited so we would know which one is which. Just dont ask low level worker and end consumer.

Palm oil is not extracted from the white part of the fruit, but from the orange mesocarp. palm kernel oil is extracted from the white part. Deforestation can only be reduced by reducing consumption. Europe's consumption of vegetable oils for food and biodiesel are the direct cause of deforestation. If Europe would be serious in reducing deforestation it should change its consumption patterns.

How will you address the problem of deforestation when the world population is expected to increase resulting in feeding a large number of people, the consequences of which will result in forest land to be used to build residential areas and also be converted into farm land to cultivate more food for the rising population. Worldwide forest cover has declined and is projected to decline further in the future resulting in biodiversity loss and species losing their habitat and on the brink of extinction.

Well, it won't have to now it is in BRICS and it can sell to a far greater market than the 18% of the world called the West. Western manufacturing has always known that the threat to their economies would initially come from countries that can make the same goods far cheaper due to lower costs of labour. In the future outside of BRICS the west will be outpriced unless they themselves become a market for cheap labour, not what the citizens want to hear, however that is not their problem as those jobs are now done by machines anyway and don't need human labour The logical conclusion for the West's future would lead to all goods being fully machine manufactured and the population becomes mere consumers paid for by the state to do nothing other than consume. Good luck with that future in what is not in a post-scarcity civilisation.

@@hafizuddinmohdlowhim8426 Paddy fields require lots of water all year round so it make sense to cultivate near areas with water supply. However, it may also strain the water supply for neighboring villages as the paddy fields use lots of it during the hotter times of the year. In terms of ownership, private estates accounted for 3.61 million hectares or 61.1% of the total planted area. So if the government want more paddy fields, they must purchase lands from private owners first. Finally, the reason why Malaysia imports more rice from India is because it is cheaper than producing it ourselves. Are you willing to pay more for Malaysian rice?

Paddy field is always owned by the farmers and not government. We need a program to encourage farmers to grow paddy fields instead of palm oil. Your argument is valid but solvable.

As I have mentioned, paddy fields can cause the water supply to strain during the hotter months of the year and the yield is not competitive against the cheaper alternatives from overseas. Why should Malaysians buy rice from local farmers when the alternative is cheaper especially when inflation is causing groceries and other essential items to increase in price? Palm oil has many uses from biofuels, cosmetics, food products and even soap and shampoo. It makes no economic sense to trade palm oil lands for paddy fields. What Malaysia should do is invest in companies that manufacture goods using palm oil in Malaysia instead of only selling it as raw materials.
