Im a Chinese, my daughter attends chinese school and then, we switched her to an international school. I am very strict when it comes to her language proficiency in BM, Chinese and English. I always reminds her that, when you learn a language, you dont just learn the language on its own, you are actually learning about its culture as well. So, when she speaks in BM, I made sure that she doesn’t speak in broken BM. I believe that, as Malaysians, our children should be able to converse well in BM, not just in English and our mother tongues. BM X main pelat². Nak bertutur, biarlah bertutur BM dengan fasih & dgn cara yg betul. Kalau dia pelat, aku akan betulkan cara pertuturannya. We shouldn't be embarrased of our National Language. We should be proud of it, as this is our culture. My anak BM teacher complimented her cause she showed respect to the language during class and scored well. Lets embrace our National Language and be proud of it. ❤

Like you I am a Malaysian. Im fluent in 3 languages. I regret not picking up mandarin. I speak to Malaysians in all three languages depending on where and who am I speaking to. I dont agree with the idea that Malaysians must speak to other Malaysians in Malay. At times I say things by mixing two or all three. With that being said, I believe a Malaysian must be able to speak Malay. If you grew up in Malaysia like the majority of Malaysians than you must be able to speak Malay. Regardless whether you went to SK, SRJK, SK Agama, Sk Antarabangsa, Tahfiz, Home schooled or you are an illiterate because your parents had never enrolled you in a school all your life. You must be able to speak Bahasa Kebangsaan. The national language is what identifies a Malay, Chinese, Indian, Sikh, Portugsse, Dayak, Kadazan, Bajau, Murut, Orang Asal and any other race as Malaysian. The common identity in a multicultural society that identifies one as a citizen of this modern nation. You are a Chinese or Indian and not a Malaysian Chinese or Makaysian Indian for an example if you cannot speak Bahasa. I believe as Malaysiane we should alll start asking Malaysians who cannot speak Bahasa to " balik Indon/India/China la woiiiii "

Growing up as a child, my late father was BM and Literature teacher, of course we converse in BM everyday. But he's an avid Reader's Digest reader and subscriber from the 60s to the 80s, bought New Sunday Times and Sunday Star papers every week for our family to read, so any words of English I can't understand I refer to him like a walking dictionary, because he grew up during British occupancy after WW2 and knew how vital and important English language was, "Bahasa Ilmu" he said.

Back when I was a kid, I was the unusually fluent English speaking kid, so I got bullied. Kena panggil Melayu celup la, poyo la, whatever you could think of, I've been called it la. I didn't tell anyone that while I am Muslim, I'm ethnically not Malay, so in my household it was mostly English speaking. So since I was in SRK & SMK, I worked really hard to buff my BM proficiency and can confidently say I'm near fluent (though if you really pay attention you can tell I translate in my head 😭) Suddenly kids these days are like, "Speaking BM is useless, in the end we learn everything in English anyways. Nanti kerja cakap BI gak." Like??? In struggling to learn BM, I've come to appreciate it. And since I still have family members who either can't/have limited BM proficiency and seeing them struggle in relating with the common Malaysian citizen, I definitely see the benefits of speaking BM. I mean, come on la, these are people who've lived _exclusively_ in Malaysia, tak pernah hidup pon overseas, tapi tak reti cakap BM. Tak malu ke? You move anywhere in the world, you'll have to speak that country's language at some point. Ni hidup kat Malaysia bertahun, still tak reti cakap BM. At that point you're just willfully ignorant. Freaking Bangladeshi workers can pick up the language within 3 months of living here, and you can't? BM is so easy, literally one of the easiest languages to pick up on. Those who can't even make the effort and give half-baked excuses are deeply upsetting to see.

If the Malays were a rich race, I think a lot more, not just Malays, also non-Malays would be a lot more enthusiastic about learning it, but the fact that majority of the rich in the country are not even Malays, kind of re-inforces the idea that there is no pride in it. Instead of blaming others for not being unconditionally loyal, how bout meet the conditions for loyalty by becoming a rich and developed country and race? A lot of you can't accept that loyalty must be earned, because that actually requires work, the easier thing to do is just expect it to be given for free. It's always like that with you, just mad that the world doesn't revolve around you, instead of proposing to do the work to make it revolve around you.

@@Eccruh did you not read? I'm not Malay either, but even I can see the usefulness of learning the _native language_ of the country I'm living in. If you plan to immigrate, by all means, continue to ignore the native language and leave. But if you plan to stay in the country, it is extremely beneficial to learn the language. That's the same for any country in the entire world. Move to Japan, learn Japanese. Move to France, learn French. That's not exclusive to Malaysia. This isn't a "be loyal to the nation" comment, so I think you should reflect on your own stance. I don't know why you seem to think speaking Malay equates to being loyal to the nation. Speaking the language is literally the bare minimum of living in _any_ country, not just Malaysia.
@Eccruh

You completely chose to miss the point, the point is Malay as a language, doesn't give non-Malays a lot of opportunities to succeed. You can become very successful in this country by ignoring the national language, in fact most successful people have done so. So, they don't need to leave, when they can find a way to make it work. But instead of being happy for their success, you're annoyed that they didn't do it your way, and you're also annoyed that their way yields superior results to your way.

@@Eccruh and you completely missed my point. But I see that was intentional. You have a different worldview, while I have mine. I have given my view, as well as reasoning for so. If you were willing to change, you would've, but I pray you never come across a situation where you're humiliated for being unable to speak the national language, as I have. Such situations leave an indelible mark.

p/s: we got to know the person before judging him/her. That Malay fler is a nice fler, it just happened that his family is bi-lingual (BM/Eng). I find no reason to boycott him when I knew him. Hatred is a choice. I met many snobs before (tak kira bangsa/agama) and it doesn't mean others are snobs too. During my uni days, I met some crazy ass racist Malay flers and one of my best friends these days is Malay. I actually met racist of different shades of skin color la, it does not mean I have to hate everyone right? I find it very tiring going out and hate everything. And one thing that I failed to comprehend when I was in the uni is... 90+% of our reading materials were in English. Having a good command of English is vital to learn and score in exams. Saya tak fasih bertutur sejak kecil. Hanya saya seorang, siblings lain ok. Siblings saya la jadi translator saya bila abah tak faham apa saya nak sampaikan. Punya la tak rapat hubungan saya dengan abah sampai dia tak faham ayat anak sendiri. Biasa saya report pasal kerja sekolah dan gred saja, tak ada kemesraan seperti family lain. Di kelas, saya seorang dipulaukan sebab saya jarang bercakap dan bila saya bercakap je ayat pasti berterabur. Budak perempuan pula kata saya gedik.

Honestly i never knew about this topic exist before and i felt pretty embarrassed since i can't talk in malay, i wasn't aware anything about this till the last year of my elementary school, and i was guilty of avoiding question because i couldn't understand anything. It was just uncomfortable and unbearable to stay in, i just felt if I should leave or not. I wish i was joking when i couldn't find my class at the time. I know there's definitely people who are unhappy about this but if you go to sjk c/t and people that speak your language in your whole life, while nobody told you anything, i think is very obvious that you're gonna have a hard time learning new things you just discovered. To all those who think Malay not important in workplace if you work for big company, think again. You know there are people who are not good in English and always want to use Malay. Imagine you're good in English AND know enough Malay to have a normal conversation, these people will be more willing to work with you. It's even more important if you're a manager. You can either complain Haiyaaaa these people can't speak English well, and get nothing done because you can't change others; or you can speak Malay yourself and get things done with the people that is already hired. In the end, who's a better manager? The one keep complain the team is incompetent or the one that get things done with the available resources?

Well it is a surplus to pick up a language and all, and enjoy the beauty of every language in it's practicality. But it is sickening to see people getting bullied for not mastering a language and people looking coerced into taking up a language "just so no one can bully me"! I mean this kind of popular linguistics hegemony should STOP: it is the downfall of everyone's culture who participate in such madness as well as the downfall of the nation. This is not what language is supposed to do. People should not learn a language under duress. People should learn a language because it is a work of art, so that it comes in handy. It is NOT a patriarchal statement of superiority. This is why it is important for every school to no longer "megahkan" Bahasa. Instead, "kekalkan" is more beautiful and nurtures the desire to learn and understand without duress. Thanks.
