Looking at the front cover of current BBC Music Magazine and seeing a picture of Malcolm Arnold in his dotage accompanied by words such as "tormented" and "Shostakovich", I think we're getting a flavour of how the BBC plan to celebrate Arnold's centenary this year.

This is almost certainly the Promenade concert of 31st August 1963, which also featured Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto with Ann Schein and concluded with a performance of the Sorcerer's Apprentice.

This is good performance of the work. But oh, that BBC voice that introduces it! I'd forgotten just how precious those announcers could sound.

I only wish that we knew the names (and history) of those BBC music announcers. This guy, I agree is not high on my list. There was a wonderful announcer who seemed to have worked for at least a 12 year period from about 1970-1982. This chap can be heard on many of my 1970's Arnold videos along with those of Peter Racine Fricker.

@@jamesstuart5904 That wonderful announcer - Antony Hopkins? If so, he and Andre Previn once wrote a book together.

At least it's not some "media personality" pretending they know anything about classical music. Also you can make out what he says and there is no fake jocularity or other nonsense.
