Amazing, thank you. "We are now at a point where you no longer need deeply disturbed young individuals in order to commit horrific acts" That's how it was starting to feel to me too.

If we lose our ability to think and reason, more murder and violence will happen. Castigating people who want to help explain things does us no good. We don't do things because we always choose to. We do them because we have been convinced to or forced to. Look at the post below that attack Malcolm Gladwell. Those are not their original thoughts, they are buying into someone else's thoughts. The reason we still have violence today and are disjointed is because of thoughts like those below that castigate, rather than explain. I applaud those who actually look for reasons why things happen, rather than just fall back on a lack of knowledge.

+jstigman murder is about losing self control and patience. Those things are not taught by absent fathers.

+Greg Howard Murder happens for many reasons, not just absent fathers. Mental illness, substance abuse, and yes the media does play a role, especially in the digital age. When people attack the messenger, like what has been done in the thread below, we lose the idea that there is more to events like murder, crime, success than meets the eye. We follow very simplistic explanations of things in our society because it is easy to understand. The problem is, nothing that happens is simplistic. It is much more complex than that. It takes thought, it takes looking at things through a different lens, it takes connection. Most people want the simple explanation. The simple explanation is typically inaccurate. A murderer who plots and plans for months upon months to carry out a murder is not absent in patience, they exhibit an extraordinary amount of patience. Biding your time to carry out an act of violence to when the moment is right takes patience.

Every other country has all the issues we do. Mental health issues, single-parent homes, increased isolation, violent video games, drug addiction, etc. The difference is we make obtaining guns much easier. That's it.

What is the proposed solution here? If we believe the riot model, then each publicized school shooting approaches the threshold for some other kid. Is the solution to keep the shooting hushed up?! That can't be right.

The solution is (AT THE MINIMUM) don't publish the shooter's name, photo, manifesto, grievances, or anything about them. Don't give them the fame they crave.

I grew up without a TV. I clearly saw how my entire school was full of clones who thought the same, watched the same shows, and had the same opinions and worldview. They were also far,far below my intelligence level. TV had dumbed down several generations, and made them barely capable of reasoned thought. Western Civilisation has seen a catastrophic decline in intelligence over the last 70 years, corresponding to a catastrophic rise in depression, addiction, mental illness, and violence. Many people cannot even locate their own country on a map. The average IQ is catastrophic. Almost every problem in the modern world is the result of the catastrophic decline in education. Only a tremendous focus on education can save us.

The plan of the Left is working. They need uncomplicated, undemanding, de-natured drones. If capitalism can be turned against itself then all the better. However the zeitgeist moment to beat all zeitgeist moments was the development and use of 'the bomb'. This was a weapon that didn't even have to kill directly, it could take years to inflict a painful and early demise. So it is no wonder why parents could feel a touch of guilt in creating a new life that may be terminated early, at the whim of power-seekers: which happens to describe the entire purpose of the Left.

It may explain why shootings started, keep going, but what we really need or seek is solutions. We can't stop neither riots nor school shootings. Even when we know riots are going to happen( any black being shot by a cop will suffice)-they still happen.

Mark Price, A solution to school shootings is needed. Yet, whatever that solution may be, it can only be arrived at through the discussion and implementation of ideas. Through trial and error

There is not one thing that comes out of New York that is reflective of the views of overwhelming numbers of Americans. Leave every major city in this country and you find the heart and soul of a America. A country that does more, cares more and affects more good in the world than all countries on this planet combined.

My wife actually went out with Mr.Malcolm Gladwell for a while. She said it was the closest thing that she has ever had to a lesbian encounter.. Another, blame America first crowd....Ironically, Gladwell does not mention gun-free zones, which provide a common characteristic for school shootings that one does not have to mention with caveats. Whereas certain years have to be selected and examined to make the Columbine theory applicable, gun-free school zones are, unequivocally, the repeated target.Of course, it is far more difficult to lay the blame for school shootings at America’s feet if the predominant characteristic is a top-down gun-free policy, rather than the rantings of a Colorado school shooter in 1999.

Lol, so you blame "gun free zones" for the recent uptick in school shootings? Despite the fact that schools have always been gun free zones. Despite the fact that most other countries in the world are also gun free zones. My personal theory is that people like you turn to mass violence because they feel under attack. Crazy white boys, lashing out against feminism, multiculturalism etc. Look at all these fucking dumb cunts that are actually proud of being anti-intellectual, "Alpha males".

Thank you, JY and quite true, he clearly has an agenda, as he overlooks critical issues as you describe, without which mass shootings are rare. Also, by characterizing mass shootings as now being performed by "non-disturbed " people, he is trying to move the debate to : "ban guns, because any normal person is likely to commit mass shootings" which obviously is a patent lie. Actually those who are brought up in an environment of guns, and who go through gun training and safety classes, as the NRA puts on, are highly rare if ever to perform a mass shooting.

He''s a smart man I'm sure but on this topic he's way off. There's only one fact that links these shootings: regardless of economics, better the health and public educational system, less the mass killings and in most cases none at all. Thus, you'll find virtually no mass killings in Canada, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Germany, etc.. Every single country that has a better health and educational system has no comparable mass killings as in the US.

japan is a monolingual, monoracial, monocultural island nation with near zero immigration, extreme deference to authority, extreme pressure to conform, and is a virtual police state (>99.9% conviction rate. this does not happen in a just legal system). societal friction is low in a nearly completely homogenous society that is nearly totally subservient. japan is not comparable.
