Fifty-five years ago today, Malcolm X was assassinated. The civil rights leader was shot to death on February 21, 1965, at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City. He was only 39 years old. Details of his assassination remain disputed to this day. Earlier this month, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said he was considering reopening the investigation, just days after a new documentary series about the assassination was released on Netflix called “Who Killed Malcolm X?” It makes the case that two of the three men who were convicted for Malcolm X’s murder are actually innocent and that his uncaught killers were four members of a Nation of Islam mosque in Newark, New Jersey. We are joined by Ilyasah Shabazz, one of six daughters of Malcolm X, who was just 2 years old when her father was assassinated in front of her, her siblings and her mother. We also speak with award-winning author Abdur-Rahman Muhammad, independent scholar, historian, journalist, writer and activist, who is widely regarded as one of the most respected authorities on the life and legacy of Malcolm X and is featured in the new documentary series, and Shayla Harris, a producer for the series and an award-winning filmmaker and journalist.

Out of curiosity, how does the black Christian community sees Malcolm X? MLK seems to be canonized and Malcolm seems to be a footnote sometimes. I'm not American, so from where I am, it seems like the discussion about the civil rights movement is centered around the Dixie South and not the North, like NYC, where integration was happening in name only.

The United States government with the help the news media (ABC, CBS and NBC) vilified Malcolm X. When I watched Spike Lee's movie, Elijah Muhammad was clearly influenced by the media coverage of Malcolm X. Unfortunately, African-Americans also are swayed by this slanderous and libelous portrayal of Malcolm X along with the Black Panthers. A real effort should be made to change this white supremacist rhetoric.

I noticed the toning down in his speakes from his earlier years phase "By Any Means Necessary" the journey to Macca had done something to him. The 60s were the decade of assassinations.

Hard not to conform to that which is heavily promoted on my phone and everything past the front door of my home. He always had such positive things to say about Africa. He believed us more than we ever could believe in ourselves. I remember my teacher telling us that this was the greatest loss to the Pan-African movement and that it would wither away after his death. And it did.

I’m happy to know that you actually read chapters about Brother Malcolm. In the U.S. South, we only were exposed to a paragraph. All I learned about Brother Malcolm was that he was a radical who hated white people and encouraged Black people to inflict violence against them. This paragraph was always in contrast to Martin Luther (Michael) King’s stance of nonviolence. It wasn’t until recently that I began to hear and research this brilliant, brave man that I realize he was the ULTIMATE patriot.

@Walter Wicca - Real black leaders like Malcolm X / others the USA/European country governments have had assassinated never merely alone needed nor only wanted just supporters. They absolutely needed truly brave and diligently committed supporters to fast and fearlessly become active leaders able to skillfully command brigades of warrior soldiers/not to just merely alone not be supporters. Malcolm needed hundreds of thousands of AA supporters to become fearless, smart, skilled,/formidable/reliable leaders! Where were Malcolm X's supporters when his home was bombed? Where were they when his life was being threatened? Where were his loving/protective supporters that February 21st evening at the Audubon Ballroom? Where were all the black race public "ride or die" black, brave, fearless, supportive, active defensive,/protective hordes of leaders to surround ensuring the safety of not only Malcolm X but also Marcus Garvey; the young Fred Hampton/ the other original Black Panthers; Khalid Muhammad; MLK Jr.; Medgar Evans; Maurice Bishop; Patrice Lumumba; Steven Sankofa, Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko; Steve Cokely; Walter Rodney; and hundreds of others? One of the most powerful films I ever watched was a French-language film produced in the late 70s called "I as in Icarus" which was loosely based on the Warren Commission's investigation of the Kennedy Assassination. In the film, one member of the Commission - brilliantly played by the late Yves Montand - refuses to accept the investigation's finding that a lone gunman was responsible for the assassination and starts his own independent investigation which results in his own assassination. At the end of the film just before he's killed, the investigator learns the significance of Icarus in Greek mythology. In the Icarus myth, the sun represents the truth and Icarus flew too close to the sun and his waxed wings melted and he fell to his death. IOW, Icarus got too close to the truth and because of this he was killed. Malcolm X was like Icarus. He got too close to the truth and was murdered.

@@rasshabaka7606 I realize it's not about who killed Malcolm. I agree with you that Malcolm was assassinated because of what he knew. He was the Julian Assange or Edward Snowden of his generation.

After he came from Pilgrimage from mecca, his mind had changed he saw things on a whole new level. He had now even bigger problems. The nation of Islam and the government!! He new it was a matter of time to die. But he was committed to the course for truth and emancipation of blacks. Mayb God have mercy on you Malcom.

Thank you Brother Abdur-Rahman Muhammad for taking this to where it needs to be. You took upon yourself to shoulder what Brother Malcolm X's family has carried for years on their own and what many of us also carry in our hearts and minds for someone we dearly loved, knowing that the truth had yet to be told. Thank you, we are indebted to you, God asked, 'Who will go?" Brother Muhammad answered the call, "Send me!" He also has responded to the Spirit of Brother Malcolm, "I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I'm a human being first and foremost, and as such I'm for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole." - Malcolm X. May God bless the continued journey toward justice, surely TRUTH WILL PREVAIL!! Amen. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Sounds like he was a bout to expound on the coincidence of the murderer "dying" right when they where about to expose him with all the evidence they gathered. In the world of elite political assasins, the assasin always "dies" right before one of his major hits are publicly discovered. Thats when the lady cut him off.
