Malcolm Young: The Genius Behind AC/DC: Malcolm Young Life Story (Malcolm Young Tribute)
Malcolm Young, former AC/DC rhythm guitarist, was the driving force behind AC/DC, the rock outfit that sold more than 200m albums over 40 years to become one of the highest-grossing bands of all time. His brother Angus, the band’s lead guitarist, may have been the most recognisable character in AC/DC, largely thanks to his habit of wearing school uniform on stage, but it was Malcolm whose inventive rhythm guitar and storming riffs formed the backbone of the band’s sound. Malcolm often took the crucial decisions about the band’s strategy, and he became notorious for abruptly firing various managers, producers and band members.
AC/DC rocketed into rock’s front rank with the release of Highway to Hell in 1979. Its swaggering juggernaut of a title track encapsulated everything that would make AC/DC great. Bass, drums and crushing guitar chords created a roaring bulldozer of sound, enhanced by Angus Young’s molten soloing, while the lead singer Bon Scott howled soulfully overhead.

Angus plays all of Malcolm’s rhythm parts and then still plays all of the face melting solos. Malcolm is a good song writer and adequate rhythm player however Angus is the obvious guitar phenomenon in AC/DC. Malcolm certainly was not.

I saw an interview with Angus a few years ago and the guy asked him if he was the greatest guitar player in rock and roll? Angus replied " I'm not even the best guitar player in my own band." Total respect for both of them.

Angus plays all of Malcolm’s riffs and rhythms and Angus still plays mind blowing solos that Malcolm couldn’t touch. Malcolm is overhyped. Stevie plays Malcolm’s rhythm and riffs and AC/DC still sounds as great as ever.

There’s a rhythm part that Malcolm plays near the end of It’s A Long Way To The Top If You Want to Rock And Roll that just gives me goosebumps and an adrenaline rush every single time that I hear it. He changes the rhythm up ever so slightly and adds subtle variations that is a a hidden gem. Sometimes it f n brings me to tears man. Along with the bagpipes playing along as the song trails off into silence, it will always be my favorite moment of Malcolm’s and the band. The second best moment is the end of Little Lover, where the band stops for a few seconds, and then comes back with a slow blues swamp that has both Malcolm and Angus trading lead fills along with their rhythm parts. Still heartbroken that Mal is gone.

In spite of his enormous well deserved success, The Late Malcolm Young always remained humble and modest. He was a very gifted guitarist and songwriter, and his live performances were always a joy to watch. Together with his just as talented brother Angus, they were the best guitar duo ever. As for a favourite Malcolm song/riff, there’s so many good ones, some stand out ones are Riff Raff, Let There Be Rock, and many others. R.I.P. Malcolm Young.

I've been a hardcore AC/DC fan since I was 11 years old (now 46) From going to the first show Monsters of Rock (Gentofte '91) Dressed in my homemade (mom-made) schoolboy uniform. To the point of having a huge tattoo of their logo on my underarm. AC/DC has been in my life for so long and mean the world to me. The loss of Malcolm was hard, even more so as he died on my birthday. So needless to say, that day is not so happy for me anymore. Thank you so much for it all Malcolm and especially for "Down Payment Blues" 😢

@@HistoryandNostalgiaChannel I showed my Dad this and he started talking about back then and when I asked him he corrected to me.. his older brother use to play soccer with George Young and their friends every now and then on the weekends in Burwood. Just friendly games on weekends or after school. My father’s friend was a drummer who jammed with Malcom when he was forming the band but didn’t like their style because this guy was more of a surfer type than a rocker so he chose not to take part in the forming of the band. My father went to Burwood Christian brothers and Angus and Malcom went to Ashfield boys state school. I received majority of my information as a kid from my older half brother as my Dad was never one for words. Now he lives with me and he’s hitting 70 he’s starting to find words I guess lol I was going to delete this comment because I had it wrong but seeing as you liked it I thought you would like to hear how it was lol I can’t believe I had it wrong all these years and never asked and feel like a dummy for listening and trusting what my older brother use to tell me when I was a kid. My father’s family had a house in Burwood and my uncle was around George’s age and my father use to tag along. They all grew up in the same are and I ended up growing up in Homebush from 6 years old in my father’s fathers house which is just a couple suburbs away from Burwood 20 minute walk back in those days as a teenager as a kid we rode our BMX bikes everywhere and it was about a 20 minute ride as a kid. Feel pretty lucky just to have grown up where I did, such a great place back then and if I had one wish it would probably be to go back to that time. Best wishes

I had the greatest 18th birthday when I was so fortunate to see, from the front row, AC/DC opening a show with Cheap Trick on August 31st 1978 at the Paramount Theater in Portland, Oregon. Angus was right in front of us - and he took a piggyback ride throughout the theater while playing a guitar solo- I will never forget that show. Malcolm was over to the left - he was the anchor - a solid wall of sound - stacks of Marshall's in your face..

I will always appreciate the true practice of "no-nonsense" of his style. No crazy effects, no overly complicated riffs, hell by latter part of his career he mostly used a guitar with only 1 pick up going right into the amps, not even using a wireless system. From doing a ton of deep dive Malcolm didn't even use an overdrive channel on the amps, just clean input with a ton of gain, then he would just beat the music out of the strings. When performing live his guitar pics would only be good for one, maybe two songs. Live at Donington is a great example.

The Guitar 🎸 that Malcolm used. Was his Brother George's 🎸 in the band The Eazy Beats! That 🎸 was also used by Family member Stevie Young. After Malcolm couldn't continue touring because of his illness. The sound of that Magical 🎸 is AC/DC !

My favorite AC/DC song is and always will be "Highway to Hell". Angus and Malcolm were two brothers that worked so well together. they knew what each other needed to make their performances even better. when interviewed they both were so humble about what they have done. and Angus is still that way. and I'm sure that Angus misses his brother more than any of us could. but just like when Bon Scott died they had to continue making music. just like Malcolm said Bon Scott would have wanted them to. and Angus has continued because Malcolm would have wanted them to. but one things for sure Malcolm is definitely missed.

Back in the 80s on the for those about to rock tour, I met the road crew at a restaurant ended up with front row seats and backstage passes, because I had pot and they were looking for some. I went to the show the next night, and ended up in the back of a limo with Malcolm And Cliff sold them a bag, fun times

I saw them in 1978 with Alice Cooper. Not many people had heard of them where I live. I ran out and bought Powerage the next night. "Down Payment Blues" was the song that sold me the album. That show was incredible. I've seen lots of rock concerts, but Alice and AC/DC cannot be topped, even but the Stones Steel Wheels.

I guess that most folks think that the front man was the best, but my favorite was Malcolm. I was behind in appreciating this great band. A few of my favorites Malcolm riffs are Thunderstruck, and It’s a long way to the top …. In his own way Malcolm really stood out to me. This 73 y.o. Great Granny loves AC⚡️DC.

I LOVED THE FIRST 6 Albums from High Voltage to Highway to Hell... Bon Scott was my Vocal Hero!!! Then I almost died in an Auto Accident on 12/6/79. Comatose until 12/25/79... Then came home from Loma Linda University Hospital on 2/23/80... So almost 3 Months in the Hospital... Not Fun at all... But, I'm still alive and able to talk about being alive after what I've been through...

I’m so glad I got to see him play just once here in Tassie(I heard he used to come here fly fishing quite regularly) in 2001! Waiting for the song I personally love more than any other during that concert was excruciating! I hold “Let There Be Rock” as my favourite song of all time, and Malcom’s rhythm guitar in that is what drives it to another level! He obviously never wanted to be the star of the show, but he was a star nonetheless. I plan to visit Bon’s grave in a couple of weeks on a visit over to Perth too. I don’t know where Malcom’s is but I suspect the UK. That’s a bit far for me…
