Oral cancer survivor here. Had it worse than Eddie as I had most of lower jaw replaced. Its beatable ... but you gotta clean up your act and be vigilant about your health. I'm one year cancer free.

Eddie is the reason I had to have a guitar . Heard that first album and was blown away . The date of Nov 2nd 1979 is when I started learning to play. Trying hard to play catch up to" Eddie ". which was impossible . Seen Van Halen on July 28 1981 in concert . Magical !!... I was wowwed to find out his birthday was one day before mine . In March of 2020 my thumb had turned black and they had to amputate it .For a guitar player it was devastating .My thumb was removed because it was cancer . The cancer " Melanoma " went to my brain and was diagnosed as stage 4 melanoma . When Eddie passed away in October . My heart sunk , Battling cancer myself I leaned into his vibe .I am still alive and even though I lost a thumb , I still play and when I play . I look up and think " You can see me playing now buddy .. How am I doing and hope to see you soon " Eddie was my guitarist and inspiration

🎸As one of Eddie Van Halen's biggest fans, I can't help but feel so sad about all of the health issues that he went through. I have never plugged this video online before, but I will now because I know it will help many people with their own personal health issues. Please search for "The Human Mold August 6, 2013" video on Google. I have had a project called the Neighborhood All-Stars for over twenty years in honor and in memory of Wayne Newton's late music teacher nicknamed Kimo. This project gives recognition to people doing positive things in the community and author Jose Antonio Jarimba from Portugal was my Neighborhood All-Star back then. Even though this is a video from over ten years ago, all of the things that Mr. Jarimba says about health related issues are still relevant today in 2024 and he is still helping people to heal successfully. In this KZbin video, I introduce Mr. Jarimba and I close his speech and as you will see, I was just so proud to have him as my Neighborhood All-Star because he has helped so many people with their health issues including my own mother! Thank you for reading this comment. God bless you and your entire family. Long Live Eddie Van Halen!!! ❤ Sincerely, wishing all of you great health, Aleth Jimenez (Sponsor of the Neighborhood All-Stars) P.S. If you would like to nominate a future Neighborhood All-Star, this is my phone number: (956)278-9145 Please leave a voice message with your name and phone number and I will gladly return your call. ☎️

Wow, I didn’t know how bad they treated Michael Anthony. This is so sad. He’s such a major part of Van Halen’s sound. It kind of overshadows everything else, now, and makes me not feel bad for the Van Halen brothers or David Lee Roth. Sammy Hagar is a hero for defending Michael Anthony. Good for him! 👍🏼

Eddie and Alex made it clear either you are with us or you're with Sammy and Mike thought long and hard and decided to move on and chose Hagar. Only after Mike jumped ship did Alex and Eddie not treat him well , can't blame the VH brothers at all .

Mike's contribution to Van Halen was dismissed early on. Dave and Eddie both had it in for him. Reasoning from both centered on his lack of song-writing contribution. Nepotism LOOMS LARGE on that one. Alex also had nothing to contribute based in what Ed and Dave deemed as "writing" but Eddie had his brother's back. Leaving only Mike to suffer the slings and arrows. Hind-sight being 20/20 you might have expected Dave to be a little more supportive. We got to hear Dave when Mike was no longer there on that last re-union tour. It wasn't pretty. Ending the debate once and for all about how richly Mike deserved a full 1/4 of the band's "take". Mike wouldn't know loyalty until Sam stuck up for him and refused to come back without him in 2004. Anyone describing Wolfgang, as a replacement of Mike or holding him in contempt for him over it should really re-think that one. Wolfgang stepped into an open position. Mike was playing with the only person in Van Halen who'd always recognized his contribution. Given the CRAP deal he'd have no doubt been offered to play with Ed, Alex and Dave I really wonder if a deal could have been struck anyway that would see him leave Sam anyway. Mean-while Dave got a reality check on Mike's importance. One part in the backing vocal that was no longer there to prop him up and another a harsh reminder that life in Van Halen first time around meant he wasn't the only outsider. Dave made $$$ on that last tour but I bet there were plenty of times he must have wondered if life inside a 4 piece band with 3 family members who see you as the outsider was worth it.

I met Eddie when I was living in a Sober living in 1991 in Burbank . He was in rehab on the third floor at Saint Joes Medical Center. When he took his 90 day chip at an NA meeting, I gave him a book called as Bill sees it.He gave me a big hug. After he got out of rehab, I saw him around at AA meetings. He sure remembered me. We smoked a few cigarettes a few times out in the back by ourselves. I guess it was my 15 minutes. I think he already had an operation for his tongue cancer. He told me that Valerie left him because he wouldn’t quit smoking anyway I gave him my number and told him if he wanted to go to a meeting with somebody just give me a call. The call never came. Meeting him was a highlight of my life. I’m just a garage musician, but I’ve always looked up to that man’s Musical gifts. I wish I could’ve helped him. I didn’t get sober until 2000’s ITS REALLY SIMPLE !!! How NOT EASY !!

AA has monopolized recovery, with the help from judges and courts. AA Does nothing to treat past trauma that caused the addiction, AA is all about time, how long your sober, and if u break down and have ONE bad day, you lose all your time and your shunned by the "fellowship", wich is a quasi Christian religion. So even If you went from drinking a liter of vodka daily, than stop drinking for 90 days and have a bad day , your still doing amazing. Being drunk once in 90 days is a amazing improvement from being drunk every day for 90 days .... I believe smart program should be used more, especially if you believe in science about addiction, and how childhood trauma is the catalyst to addiction and also adhd. AA is good 👍, but some ppl do commit su***de, after they have one relapse, one bad is OK!! Especially if you don't drink the next day and stay sober again for significant time. It's ok , we all have a bad day occasionally

I think Van Halen had big problems with alcohol & other substances possible ESPECIALLY Eddie but other bands did too. Particularly OZZY .....Ozzy Osbourne. I think in the 1970s after the counter culture failed revolution of the 60s Rock 'n Roll was seen as a LIFESTYLE as well as a type of music & the pressures of being on the road & the things which were offered to musicians was an irresistible temptation to them. Ozzy had to leave Sabbath in 1979 because he was so far gone on coke & booze that the band couldn't function & Tony,Geezer & Bill had to make a painful decision to move on without him. Ozzy of course claimed that ALL the band were caught in the trap. He said - 'When we started cutting the early Sabbath stuff & touring we were a ROCK band doing drugs....But by the time we were cutting Vol 4 in America we had become a DRUGS band doing Rock' 😕...I think different individuals handle things like alcohol & drugs differently depending on their individual personalities. For instance Geezer got clear & free from it much earlier and easier than Ozzie or Bill did. & it was the same with Eddie & Alex.....In the 1980s Alex was CRAZY doing it. But when Jan their Father passed away from alcohol complications Alex just walked away from it. But poor Edward kept getting stuck in it. Particularly after he heard he had that damn cancer. 🙁😔

But no matter how much of a fan that I am, he and his brother showed some disgraceful behaviour towards others for quite a long time, so damaged their reputations a long time before Eddies demise. I met all the guys from VanHalen (specifically Eddy and Dave) back in the 1970s before anyone knew them when they played at a local ballroom my girlfriend worked at on Thursday nights. We all used to hang out in the green room together. Some years later I had quit smoking and told Eddy one time talking to him that he should stop too. He didn't sadly. He loved smoking and drinking. Sad what happened to him later on, but he finally pulled out of it because of his son. That was the only thing that changed his life, but it was too late, the damage was done. We lost a great man way too early. Too many die from Drugs and alcohol. Several great losses in my lifetime. Hopefully, I won't see them for many years to come, but we will all be reunited someday. God bless them all. They gave so much to all of us here!

Eddie Van Halen interview 1986 word for word.."Without Michael Anthony there is NO Van Halen." And then they had the audacity to cut him out of the royalties?????????????????? It was Michael Anthony's backing vocals that bailed out DLR's cliche ad lib glib singing and lyrics. If I was Mikey I would've walked and said "Good luck replacing me." Wolfie sure couldn't.
@1956tojo
@1956tojo 2 ай бұрын
I firmly believe that THEY were simply following Eddie's lead on getting Wolfie in there, because that period of time was very short and out of the blue... I believe that Eddie was told he had the terminal cancer and his time was limited (which at the time was not shared with the others)... and I have no doubt that Eddie had always wanted to get Wolfie out there on stage with him at some point and so he had to make a move.... The excuses used for boot'n Michael never did add up or make sense... Eddie should have probably just laid it out there for Michael instead of making shit up and shit'n on him... In retrospect, and being the good man Michael IS, he does understand and does wish it would have been handled different, but understands and that's that.

Eddie almost got it right. It was most likely the metal picks that gave him oral cancer, but not because of the electro-magnetic radiation they might have picked up. It was because those picks were made out of beryllium-copper, a very toxic metal know to be cancer causing. I used these picks for years because they had a great feel and if you put them in your mouth (as Eddie did) a green oxide would form that made the pick easier to hold. Unfortunately, doing that also released a toxic carcinogen into your mouth. I finally quit using them when I heard about Eddie's oral cancer, but I still have a few lying around as momentos. The picks were marketed under the name "Hot Licks" IIRC but I don't know if you can get them anymore because of the danger associated with them.

I’ve been a Van Halen fan and particularly an EVH since high school in the early 80’s. When someone lives a life of nonstop partying and uses alcohol and drugs along with smoking 3 or 4 packs of cigarettes/day for 40 years and then says the cancer was because of a pick between his teeth, that’s pretty delusional as sad as it is to say

That's not delusional, because it wasn't in his lungs but on his tongue at the time... To Eddie, it made perfect sense... and he used several different type metal picks through the years, silver, stainless steel, copper, nickel, etc...... and I cannot imagine playing with a pick in my teeth without fcking with it with my tongue while it's there... and I have known way more people and seen way more people in my life who had cancer pop up and they had supposedly Gotten it all, only for it to come back within a few years with a vengeance and it kills them.... and several of those people had never smoked ANYTHING or even drank at all... My Grandma smoked from being an early teens until she was 92 years old and passed at 104... without a speck of cancer anywhere... then again she wasn't holding metal guitar picks in her teeth and chuggin Jack Daniels either.. Mom caught Dad smoking after they told him his cancer was inoperable and was mad at him and came to me about it.... I already knew that he kept sneakin smokes... I told her what he told ME when I mentioned it to him..... He said." They can't fix it.... so what difference will it make NOW? I'm not going to make myself miserable trying to quit a 67 year old habit that I enjoy while I'm dying... FCK that!".... so it doesn't get any more real than that....

Russian roulette seems like a good game for you since you have cyborg genetics. I can’t speak intelligently about guitar playing but I definitely can about the reality of disease process. Chronic Inflammation is the underlying cause of basically every major disease. If you think that because Eddie’s cancer expressed itself in his mouth and wasn’t spread throughout the rest of his body you don’t have a clue. Unfortunately The vaxxx bio weapon that Eddy took put the finishing touches on him. Maybe you’ve been double vaxxxxed and boosted and can’t think straight.

From Vinyl LPs, many which I destroyed from constant wear and tear, then cassette tapes in my car, which I easily destroyed many times over, then my cassette walkman, then CDs in my car and Discman and at home etc. I bought so many VH albums and never regretted a single purchase. Note: I never bought VH 3... lol So while i was very saddened to have lost EVH in the same year I lost another legendary musician, Neil Peart of Rush, I'm just very grateful I lived during the "golden age of modern rock" where I saw the rise and success of these legends of rock. Especially Eddie. So RIP EVH and thank you for shaping my music culture for over 4 decades! If it wasn't for you, and Neil Peart, I'd be listening to crappy disco. ugh...

People forget Eddie was classically trained in music. He probably had a good handle on music theory before picking up the guitar. He said in an interview that he never "read the book" on how to play guitar but his abilities on the piano translated. People say he made everything up as he went but I don't think he did. I think he understood music theory and applied it. He just did it in a way that hadn't been done on the guitar before. I'm not taking anything away from him. Eddie changed our lives with 1984.

He wouldn't have had a handle on music theory in order to have applied it because its theoretical abstractions would have been too difficult to comprehend at his age of 6-12 which was when he studied classical piano. If people want to read theory into his ear playing way of doing guitar later in order to teach others then that's fair enough. People have their own way of doing things & they should not be chastised ..Not me just me but law before mob.

I still get goosebumps listening to Eddie's rhythm guitar playing during the lead break on the song Mean Streets. The whole song, including the lead break is greatness, but the rhythm on that lead break is sheer genius. RIP.

Dave became someone so different than we thought he was from the early years. He was a hard rocker and wild and after 5 records they just went pop. Very bad for the hard rock fans that made them famous but financially going pop allowed them to reach a massive fan base and sold albums very well. Great business decision. The real heartache to us all is we only got 4 hard rock albums from VH. I wish they would have stuck to the VH I sound all the way. I think they still would have done very well

Totally agree!! The first 4 VH albums were solid creative hard rock. Eddie's guitar work was incredible! Eddie going to keyboards and Hagar replacing Roth made VH a pop rock band. I never was a Roth fan ever! Had Eddie been able to find a David King (Fastway) Lenny Wolf (Kingdom Come) or Jack Russell (Great White), VH would have been the Zeppelin of America.

Saw them in 1993 in outside arena in Phoenix. It was when Eddie still looked really good and they all sounded great! I was not a cannabis user at the time because I was 8 months pregnant but people were blazing all around me and I actually got dizzy from it lol. My good friend, who was a nurse, was with me and helped me get out of the smoke and sit on the grass. I was not about to miss them in concert even though I was so far along in my pregnancy. I use to tell my daughter, who was born just 3 weeks later, she may never see Van Halen but she certainly heard them live❤ One of the best concerts I've ever been to. Such a great memory 😊

I went to school in the same era (ok, the early 1970's) and am white from a nearby school district, but still experienced bulling from both blacks and white kids while in school. I looked at it as just how kids interacted. As we got older, the skills of those that played good covers was very much appreciated. None of us care what skin color of the performers. I was 15 when I heard Van Halen I for the first time. I will never forget it.
