This is quite an interesting technique. You are developing instinct and the best way to improve instinct is to add distractions and unpredictabilities. An example of this can be found in ice skating. I improved my skating not through free skating with other people, but through playing hockey with my mates. Passing the puck about and shooting it against the boards and attempting to predict where its going to go. When the puck unpredictably flies past you, your instinct will be to turn around as quick as possible. Therefore, you will adapt to the situation and instinct kicks in. Fantastic technique. Great work Malcolm! Love from Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Love this video. Actually quite philosophical too! This video really lends itself well to practising riding in the trees. What other things can I practise to be better at riding more smoothly in the trees? Maybe there is a follow up video in here somewhere?
@malcolmmoore2 жыл бұрын
Perhaps yes! Trees obviously require you to be able to make tight turns when needed, but most of it is actually just being able to look ahead and plan your route, having the confidence not to just hit the brakes too much, and being able to carry your speed around the trees without shooting down and getting stuck!

Yo, Malcolm. First time writing here. I got over the beginner stages and I guess I am at an intermediate level. I am right there where I feel my board is not quite right for me anymore(had a flat base rocker) So now I am looking for a more camber-oriented board based on my feeling mostly. Would you please make a video explaining in your traditional way(very good pedagogic skills btw) what are the real differences in riding between flex, profiles, etc? Like a flat rocker vs full camber vs the hybrids. and what a stiffer flex will give or take from the riding. I feel that most videos out there are lacking a proper explanation and you end up very confused. For example, my flex 5 flat base rocker board was very unstable at anything over 20-25kmph and almost impossible to carve no matter my technique it would always wobble and have a difficult time holding an edge. Thank and hope you will do such a video I think all will benefit from it. PS: btw I got into snowboarding because I filmed riding events with my FPV drone skills :)
@kingofstadia61032 жыл бұрын
Started in '89 here, the truth is and I dont want to speak for others, is you have to decide what your terrain preference is, most long time boarders carry at least two boards for varied conditions. but a true camber is always a good start...., flat is stiff and fast and rocker, well get ready to butter up the slopes all day.....

Turning with oppositetiming is a quite practical thing, too. Whenever you have some stowboard beginter or erratic skier in front of you on a narrow piste or cat track, that you want to give room or stay away from, resp., you do that for a few turns until there's opportunity to point it and zoom past them.

In my opinion the pinnacle of unpredictability, distractions, etc is riding glades. Having to navigate through gaps in trees and follow super irregular mogul structures (if there's no new snow) really switches up how you think about turning when you start to take glades at moderate speed. I find myself figuring out how to tackle certain turns in the opposite direction I'd otherwise take them if there were no trees, which really improved my boardsense and my confidence!

Hey Malcom, I have a short question: I'm about to start snowboarding so I'm confronted with the question, which board-shape is the right one for me. Is the camber-shape really that much ahead of the rocker? Thank you, your vids are great!
@elho0012 жыл бұрын
Camber is predictable in how it's gonna ride, the camber can be mellower or mor more pronounced, but its always camber. (Note though, that there are other factors like e.g. stiffness or shapes that can make different camber boards very different!) With rocker there's all kind of different rocker profiles and I would say that it's more important the other traits of the board need to play well with the rocker for it not to show its disadvantages, than with camber. I learned on camber and have ridden camber for years before rocker was invunted, I have since demoed rocker boards that sucked (showing much less edge hold) and ones that I liked, and in fact I rode a hybrid rocker for some years and now have 1 camber and 2 hybrids. The disadvantage of camber people will tell you more or less passionate about (depending on their own preference) is that the better edge hold means its also easier and more nasty to catch an edge. BUT, as catching an edge is the result of wrong technique, I strongly do recommend to learn on camber - the first days may a bit harder, but your board will let you know if you use your edges wrong right away. On the bunnf hill its still without consequences and you get no opportunity to get used to bad habits (related edges, at least).

Thanks elho, that's pretty accurate and you've saved me some time on my bus journey home!

Keeping with the driving analogy, I'm surprised you didn't spend much time on things like moguls, trees, berm tracks, etc. These all introduce obstacles and routes that you have to take, just like in driving, and I feel like moguls in particular have been the biggest factor in my personal improvement. You did briefly mention moguls at the end, but I feel like they are under-appreciated as a learning tool.

I love to try as many different resorts within driving range of me, buying a season pass that covers a wide range of resorts really pushed me to explore the whole range last year. It's an interesting comparison with driving and snowboarding, but in both cases, "not thinking" about doing either task only gets to too an average level of competance / skill at best. Most drivers do not think about the task of driving when driving, it is merely something done to get to somewhere to do something else. And as a result most drivers are awful! Yes, they can just about physically control their vehicle at a basic level, but they tend to be jerky, generally fail to properly observe and plan there movements, and when they encounter a situation above their (low) skil level they typically crash! The first step in all advanced driving programs is to teach the driver to self observe and to actively think about driving as a specific task in itself. Then they can start to become truely good drivers and here, yes, repetition and practice in the real environment is key. Basic motor control skills are the key that unlocks the "art of driving" in exactly the same way that basic posture and edge control unlocks the art of snowboarding. The beauty of your videos is that you actively make riders think about what they are doing, and take an interest in that task, and from there it's a natural progression of improvement 🙂
