This is a legitimate pedagogical technique. You learn/reinforce muscle memory partially by watching other people like a baby does watching its parents do this magical awesome thing called "walking" that you totally would not ever abuse to get extra cookies or pick up the cat which kitty definitely loves very much although not as much as your mom loves taking pictures of it to post for likes. Do be kind enough to be a much cuter baby than any of the uggos her friends ended up secretly resenting. It's only polite. She loves you , feeds you, & hates her friends on the downlow. Same principle through life. Same principle on the slopes. Same principle on KZbin, especially if your goal is to learn how to fight like a retarded walrus in sea mammal melee at Burger King, Tuesday 2:37am.+++ (at least till you're Mitch McConnell or Joe Biden's age & alive only through platelet smoothies from healthy immigrant children plus black magic & better medical than any of the stupid plebes you, LOL, "represent.") You get the same effect on a lift watching the best riders. Best of all you get it following them all day. That's the best lesson. Just try to hang best you can, watch carefully & remember to look upslope more once you're traversing it more at high speed. +++Watch out for the quiet cook who's always watching. He's Burger King bruce lee, plus he keeps a piece of rebar back there. Just leave him be. That guy whipped Jack Reacher's ass in the only unpublished Reacher novel.

Hello Malcom this past weekend i went to mountain to learned snowboarding i started at 9am and i follow every single instruction on this video step by step until i master it from a slow speed to a decent fast speed. i only took 1 hour of break to rest & eat. by 2PM i was hitting blue trails & by the end of the day i was jumping on small tables & hips. i was so hype & in shock of how much i could progress in only 1 day. i went back home extremely happy. im a guy of 41 years old that definitely was looking for guidance to avoid risk of injurie. i just want to thank you for all the time and effort you put into this videos your are helping thousands of people to learn such a wonderful sport !!! appreciate a lot. i know that not all the people will learned in one day but if they are consistent by doing every step on this video will get it in a much faster time.

am using my CASI level 1 to get my wife to snowboard. Started teaching her 7 trips (10 years) ago, and she really is someone who gets afraid rather too much to almost be able to snowboard, but I think I'm almost at the continuous linked turns part finally. This video, albeit the 15 mins clickbait title is misleading, is actually really great, one of the best for helping her see a nice concise version of the route she's been taking, with new tips I can assimilate. Something I'd like to add, for people interested in teaching your wife, try to get to a resort with many open, not too steep and uncrowded slopes, make the place as expensive and nice as possible, with lots of extra stuff to do, and don't expect to be out all day snowboarding, esp. at the start of the week. I'm going to Finland for the 3rd time, Ruka, seems excellent for teaching beginners that are okay with the cold.

I've had snowboading lessons from Malcolm when I was starting out some 8/9 years back, it was money well spent because he picked up my many mistakes instantly and showed me how to fix them in a way that was really easy for me to understand. I bet if I was to visit Alpe d'Huez today it would be really hard to get more lessons from him because he's probably booked up for months. Malcolm is a great teacher and I would highly recomend him to anyone especially if your a beginner, snowboading is really hard so having a great instructor who is patient and encouraging was invaluable to me. Keep posting these videos mate!! I love watching them.

I've been watching your vids in preparation for my return to snowboarding after over 25 years. Never was a good rider or skier, mostly because I only went a 2 to 3 times a year. (financing lift tickets is a bitch in your late teens and early 20s). Anyway, today was the first day to try to employ all the techniques I've gleaned from you videos. Started in the practice area which is 150m long, at the most. Felt like I was learning next to nothing in that environment, so I exited to the 3.5 mile long green run after 2 trips down the practice area. It took only a few minutes for my skills to return from my previous experience. Problem with that is those skills is, they are bad skills. Sure, I can get down the mountain, but it's all skidded turns and kicking the tail out every time. I really concentrated on the posture and moving my hips and knees. Also thought through the techniques you teach about leavers and knee steering. In practice, I found this very, very difficult. It would start to have the effect desired, but almost always ended in some skidding, even though less than at the beginning. Also, on several occasions, when turning toe side, I would get a nice edge with no skidding, but the board would just stop turning and I would either fall or have to kick the tail out to avoid the fall. I'm doing something very wrong, here. Any suggestions based on the very weak description I've given?

Hey Malcom - thank you for all you do, it really helps. I want to point out something crucial that I found really counterintuitive at first - but I think it hinders progress in many cases. I'm talking about the fact that when you learn basics - you are almost always told that you should never "be" on the front edge - the one that causes you to tumble and fall. However, while making an early turn - you totally ARE on that lower edge for the first phase of that turn - after you changed the edge and before your board is 90 degrees perpendicular to the slope. Not sure if I'm making myself clear here, but there is this factor of leap of faith to the early turn - you worded it nicely two videos ago when you said - you have to let yourself fall over the edge to the other side. I think this needs more elaboration and reassurance from you that yes, to make an early turn you're on the downhill edge for a bit, but it's ok.
@mankybrains11 ай бұрын
That's more of an advanced move when you get out of beginner mode. This video is purely for beginners to get them used to changing edges during the turns without having to think of other aspects. I'd assume building the base skills first would benefit most people. Some just have the knack to learn faster and learn differently, the majority don't.
@JukkaliMx11 ай бұрын
You're right but in that case you're not moving down the fall line. You're moving either across, or diagonally. If you sink your downhill edge on the snow, while it's perpendicular to the direction of your movement, you WILL eat it 😆 That's the difference, and it's going to be hard for a newbie to get the nuance.
@MateuszSkutnik11 ай бұрын

Interesting. What you call "side slip" here is pretty much what I was taught was, and still call, falling leaf; and what you call "falling leaf" in the video I've always called J-turns. Great video, Malcolm. I love the emphasis you put on leading with the front knee, and not relying on the back foot kicking out to skid. I think many of us get a pass on that from our instructors, when we're just beginning, but you're right that the faster one learns to lead with the front knee, the better the turns get.

@mankybrains11 ай бұрын
You'll be fine. You have experience with skis already so your learning would be way quicker. If you have tried skateboarding you'll get an idea of snowboarding already too. You have the general idea of using edges. I only did skiing,ski blade(whatever you call it) one time in my life only at mid 20s. They were easy to pick up since I roller bladed a lot and ice skated occasionally when I was younger. I roller bladed miles just to get to work during the summer a few times. Though I never did go super fast nor learned to really slow down quick during high speeds. I slid and used a tree for that after losing control. No real lessons, just all picked up from putting on the roller blades. It's been over 15 years since the last snowboard ride. Prior to that 2 times snowboarding. Since I moved closer to the mountains, I decided to do it more often. Last season I rode 6 times, as I wasn't sure if my body could keep up. I have a season pass this year and expect to be riding multiple times more than last season. Good luck have fun stay safe.

@@mankybrains Thanks for the reassurance. I am still fairly athletic as I keep in decent shape. Roller skate, roller blades, skate board, wake board, water ski, you name it, I have probably done it. We are going to the be on the mountain 2 days of the trip so should definitely make some progress.

I've watched most of your videos (from which by the way I learned a lot, so thank you for that) and I'm not sure if I missed it in some of them or there is not a video of that topic. My problem with narrow and steep is that I gain speed quite quickly and then get scared so I turn my snowboard on my toe edge or back edge, which leads top slowing down my speed. Maybe this is the way of riding on narrow and steep slopes, I don't know, but I wanted to ask you if you have any advice on that.

Hello Malcolm, awesome videos The most difficult part for me is the bumpy steep slopes, it's where I skid and eat snow. Or just very steep slopes. Is there any limit of where to carve? Seems to me like carving at 45deg is going to be hard

Carving is just one of the many types of turns a snowboarder needs to have in their arsenal. And you need to know when to deploy each one. No, you cannot carve in all runs. Malcolm has a video on short turns and knee steering. Watch that. It's the one you'll use the most on stepper marked runs. For bumps, one issue we all deal with is not being aggressive enough. You have to ride very dynamically, and really attack the moguls. Snowboard Addiction has a great video on mogul riding; and one thing that helped me is ride tracked out slush like it was a mogul field. It's a lot more forgiving than actual moguls, and helps you practice the movements.

How do you ride slush? I am beginner. One day I have good curving. It rains overnight and next day, my curving is all over the place. I have no control on my speed, curving radius and forcing me into J turns!
