Just bought a pair of Supermatics myself given the convenience of stepping in and out while wanting to teach my kids to snowboard. Your videos were the ones convincing me of their benefit. Still have to test them out on the snow in the mountains but the setup was easy and I feel as tight in the binding as my strap bindings (yes I'm one of those "let's crank this strap one notch further types"). So far not regretting the purchase!

Another great video malcolm. I had my 1st season on the supermatics last yewasand was using my DC boots. I liked the binding but at times I found sometimes difficult to get in and out not big problems but just when the board wasn't totally flat. I have just received today the nidecker rift boots in white which look awesome and feel so comfy straight out of the box. Got my board out in my bedroom and tried them and omg the boot goes in and out so much easier than my DC boots. So although you can use any boot with them I think I will find np problems with my new boots. It's not just a marginal difference the rift just glide in and out and that's with a dry binding so it's a big difference and can't wait to hit the hill with my new set up. Also I love your 3 points at the end and couldn't agree more with all you said. We are all snowboarders at the end of the day. Keep up the good work malcolm I'm looking forward to your next video 😊

Last season at some point I noticed they had become “unlocked”. Haven’t had that issue with the new ones. And in general, these are absolutely amazing compared to having to strap in. They really eliminated what for me was just about the worst part of snowboarding. It’s so easy popping in and out you just find yourself doing more you otherwise wouldn’t. When learning to snowboard constantly strapping in and out going up and down a baby slope was a horrible surprise, i hadnt really given it any thought before taking it up and it was the worst part. 2 or 3 minutes to faff about just to do 10 half baked skids and fall on my arse. Then going out into the mountains and it's -15C, 3000m above sea level and blowing 80kmh winds, you really just want to get in and go, not screw about with ratchets clogged up with snow whilst all the skiers bomb off. Supermatics all the way 🎉
@malcolmmoore2 ай бұрын
I will say that they have a bit of a learning curve, and for beginners who are quite unsteady on their feet, the movements you need to make to stand on one foot and balance whilst clicking the other foot in can be a little difficult if you're on anything but a completely flat slope, but yes once you get the hang of that they are for sure easier.

I've been considering these for some time now, but was concerned about the weight. I used to be an advanced snowboarder, however, at 50, and with all the injuries from life, boarding, military, and dumb decisions, I don't have the knees to ride parks anymore, so I don't think weight is going to be much of a concern. With this being one of several reviews, I think I may just pull the trigger and buy them.

100 days plus on mine, theres 3 issues I got with mine. First I like the ride feel (all mountain freestyle vet guy) they didn't fail me once. but I think the leaver position to get out of the binding sucks. its counter intuitive to have to push down your leaver and move out the foot the same time. Also its way to far down. Easy fix make a pull leaver which is as high as possible. second weight and footprint side to side is a problem. just make it smaller and not as heavy. 3 criticism are the straps with the plastic. It doesn't slide in as good. hope they carry over the straps and buckles from the carbon, with the flex of the normal version. oh and did I mention, they leaver to get out sucks

Bravo on another honest, insightful and trustworthy product review. Curious for what scenarios do you not ride with supermatics nowadays?
@malcolmmoore2 ай бұрын
Honestly it is mostly down to laziness in changing the bindings, so I have my regular supermatics set up on my twin park board which is what I mostly use for teaching. My new board for this season is the spring break powder twin, that has the carbons on, and then I have a pair of normal two strap bindings that I will put on to another board for when I use that. Like I have a new Stranda carving board that I'll probably just put the normal two strap bindings onto when I set that up, but mostly just so they stay set on my other boards! If I was riding more park and hitting more jumps and wanted the most lightweight solution then I might not use them, but honestly I'm not riding at a level where the slight weight penalty of the supermatics creates any problems.

as a softboot carver for me it is a must to be able to adapt the orientation of the highback in relation to the edge, i want it parallel to the edge (i know some other carvers dont care) - so this is unfortunately a dealbraker for me. wouldnt be opposed to never be bending over again :P

My goal is to improve my carving and ride faster, and I am also someone who likes to crank down the binding ratchet a little bit after each run. Being a carbon binding, shouldn’t it be lighter? Weight of the supermatics is its weakest point. Hope they work on that so i would love to get one.
@ericolmack23502 ай бұрын
Lift some weights already. Do you weigh your boots and snowboard too?
@malcolmmoore2 ай бұрын
They're only about 20grams lighter per binding, the added response is the selling point really
@nicknz1002 ай бұрын
Have you used the burton stepon bindings? What do you think of those. I guess you might have a favourite boot that won't work with that system.
@malcolmmoore2 ай бұрын
I haven't given them a proper go to be honest, tried 2 runs with them at a demo day about 4 years ago, so I imagine they've changed a bit since then.

Awesome video! Though I am still torn between the two 🙈😂. How did you find the carbons when taking it easy? I spend maybe half my time carving, but the other half is taking it easier off piste. I know the extra stiffness will be better for carving, but concerned they won't be as fun when slowing it down and wondering if the regulars will be better overall as they aren't exactly no slouch at carving anyway. Interested to know what you reccomend.
@malcolmmoore2 ай бұрын
Yeah I mean both will work, but as you say the regulars will be a little better when you slow things down, and the carbons will be better when you start carving. Both can do it all though so it depends what you want to prioritise!
@alexgould37722 ай бұрын
Thanks. I probably prioritise both equally looking back over the last couple years. However, thinking about what I want to do more of is off piste, trees and untracked snow. I generally only carve if the off piste isn't any good, which the added response to get round trees and the like will be better I guess? I am on Rome Targa's atm which sort of sit between the two on stiffness I believe. Softer will always be easier, but the added stiffness concerns me it will be a bit too twitchy and to be fun as my cruising speed is about 20mph and even carving I am only hitting 25ish mph, 30 tops.

Hi, I consider myself an intermediate rider. The ground tricks is the field where I would like to progress and carving of course. I prefer lighter gear. The boards that i am riding are Jones Aviator 2.0 and Salomon Dancehall Pro. Having all this said which binding I have to go for - regular supermatic or carbon verison? When you put two boards next to each other it looks like the highback of the carbon version is higher than the regular supermatic's highback? This is favorable in terms of carving, but is this supposed to be a dealbreaker for regular supermatics in favor of the carbon version. Currently I am using Rome Katana.

Hey dude. I know you’re not a fan of Burton step ons but are these worth it for a week a year trips? Thanks

I like your style of riding here, what do u have your bindings set at? I’m going to buy a board binding and boots tomorrow. I’m in between beginner and intermediate. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much 😊😊 I'm usually riding +15-12 ✌🏽

At 3:25 you say that your heel-toe transition isn't quite right -- can you elaborate for those of us less experienced at analyzing footage? Is it just the amount you are leaning your shoulders over versus using knees/ankles for tilt with more upright upper body or am I missing it entirely?
@octref2 ай бұрын
Hey Malcolm! Thanks for the video. Do you think they are too stiff for park riding? Want to get a pair for hiking features.
@malcolmmoore2 ай бұрын
I would probably go for the regular supermatics if you're hiking the park, these will still work but the softer high back and straps on the supermatics will make holding presses etc on boxes and rails easier, also they'll be more forgiving too.

I feel most of the hate and kook calling is directed at Burton (and soon Union) Step Ons. Clews, probably not even worth mentioning. Generally seems there's respect for Supermatics even if a lot of people don't want to ride em. A great design; you can strap in when you need, and keep your favorite boots. Don't think they're for me, but glad they exist. When I see someone riding them, what it indicates to me is that that person gave it thought beyond the first step in/on system they came across. Sure, maybe a shop guy helped, but anyone that gives anything a slight amount of thought these days, respect.

Malcom I purchased the non carbon Supermatics this week and I am struggling getting my back foot out of the bindings .iam finding it hard to press the release button down to get my foot out before the board starts sliding with my foot stuck in the bindings is the leave to stiff or is the a Technique

I'm on the XL bindings, if you go to the Nidecker website (link in video description) you can see what size bindings you need for your feet

I'm a Mondo 26.5/sometimes boot 9 (US) and got the L Supermatics. I haven't mounted them yet because they're for a hypothetical new board I plan to demo. Lol but currently have the Union Forces in M and they're very similar in dimensions, maybe a bit more bulk around the heel/ankle area of the highbacks because of the tech on the Supermatics. Unrelated, I also didn't noticeably lift one up after the other and consciously feel a weight difference. Excited to test them out this season.
I have heard this can happen on boards without a laminated top sheet, as in custom made snowboards, but I haven't had this issue on any of my boards that I've used it on. I think the ridges on that part are to stop snow from getting stuck underneath.

I'm absolutely not in the market for new bindings, i love my current flows. But im always looking at the supermatic carbons and the flow carbons...first world problems
@malcolmmoore2 ай бұрын
Very much so haha, the flows will weigh less, and have less heel cup sticking out, that's their benefit!

Hey Malcolm, What size Powder Twin did u get and what is your boot size and weight. I tried that board and loved it! Just not sure what size to get. My boot size 11 but I'm 15 lbs over weight limit. Thx

I'm by no means a special top X % rider. I'd say I'm an average guy in that regard. But I'm bigger and stronger than average (100kg, 188cm - powerlifter) and looking for new bindings. These step-ins really appeal to me and I found a discount that put the normal and carbon supermatics at a negligible price difference. Which ones would suit me best as a 1 set solution for my 1 board quiver (ride moderator 165W)?
@danieljurisevic5 күн бұрын
I was holding the supermatic in my hands and had one fear, can you just tell me.... do they feel LOOSE when you click in, couse when I ride I need to tighten the straps on max so my foot doesn't move an INCH. I 've got a feeling with these, they clcik, hold your foot, but there's a little of a wiggle in it while you ride
@cnghiem67Ай бұрын
Is it my imagination or are you riding with positive angles on both of you bindings?

"ive actually spent time using them, so i feel i can give my input" (and not paod for review)..... I wish more folk would do this, rather than "ive opened the box and cause ive been paid, ill tow the party line". I love my regular supermatics, but i wish spare parts were sold in all the colourways, so i customise mine 😂

Hey Malcolm, have you tried these with the Stranda Biru? And if so how do they perform?
@malcolmmoore2 ай бұрын
kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKKniI2Vr5l6h9ksi=v7SDrG6R39yTDB27 This is the regular supermatics on the Biru, I'm yet to put the carbons on though, but I would imagine a similar ride with a bit more response 👍

Thank you for the video. I am going on season 2 on my Supermatics. Have you found that the ratchet that locks the heal cup down is finicky? I need a few good kicks to get it to lock now, it's odd because it's only on my left side. The additional buckle/strap locks are not staying locked, and I lose my position and don't realize it until I try to step in.
@malcolmmoore2 ай бұрын

i ride "regular stance" so left foot forward, normally at the start of every season atleast the first few rids, the side of my foot starts to kill me..(so up along the side of the foot from the baby toe on the left foot, i did get a new board and bindings during covid but this problem started last year maybe in 2022 cant really remember, My boots are old tho they covered atleast 10 season now., could this be the reason?
@jedmosely639627 күн бұрын
i currently have what i believe is an older version of the supermatics and have noticed my heel popping up sometimes and was wondering if these fix that? also, I get 40% off on Nidecker so im wondering if it is worth it regardless of the small issue I have with my bindings.
@malcolmmoore27 күн бұрын
There's been some small improvements here and there but nothing in the overall baseplate design, so if you were getting heel lift back then I would imagine it's something more to do with the boot to binding fit rather than anything else.
@jedmosely639626 күн бұрын
@@malcolmmoore it might be because i have the straps too tight preventing me from getting all the way in, I'll have to do more testing
@WellingtonCordeiroАй бұрын
I don't really see many people who get triggered by the Supermatics, they hate on Klew, Flow and Burton Step In designs 😂 I do have some inside knowledge that Nidecker is introducing a new system to their child brands that is like a Supermatic Lite. One of their riders hits my home mountain and I saw it in action.

Hi Malcolm, if you set the forward lean to the max, will it make difficult to step in/out? I am considering in getting one but I usually ride with max forward lean. Thanks
@malcolmmooreАй бұрын
I have it in the middle, doesn't really make much difference because the high back is pulled back until you step in anyways, then it clicks forward into place
