✎ He has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1996. During his high school years, he was a middle-distance runner and won the 1,500 meter title at the 1978 Ontario High School Championships. In the spring of 1982, he interned with the National Journalism Center in Washington, D.C. He graduated with a degree in History from Trinity College, University of Toronto, in 1984. In 1987, he began covering business and science for The Washington Post. When he started at The New Yorker in 1996 he wanted to "mine current academic research for insights, theories, direction, or inspiration." He gained popularity with two New Yorker articles, both written in 1996: "The Tipping Point" and "The Coolhunt". These two pieces would become the basis for Gladwell's first book, The Tipping Point, for which he received a $1 million advance. All five books were on The New York Times Best Seller list. He was appointed to the Order of Canada on June 30, 2011.

I love Malcom's reference to Jamaica's dominance of sprint events. I will add that it goes beyond the history of the sports. We are encouraged to exercise daily. Children are taken to open fields from kindergarten and encouraged to run. There are local, regional and national racing events held from kindergarten to university levels. All these help to identify the disciplined and gifted runners from a very young age. They are then groomed to race at the national level. Then at the international level. Thanks to the success of Usain Bolt and the other international athletes everyone is running or walking in various race events throughout the year. So it most definitely is possible to live within a few miles of a runner. Living next door to someone an Olympic medalist will be a 100,000 or more possibility. It is possible to bump into them during the course of your day though, as most Jamaicans do not mob 'celebrities' for an autograph or picture.

Comment/Clarification on 10 000 hours ... There is power in having a rest/taking breaks (something needs to happen that we are unaware of), There is room for breath in pauses, There is music in silence, There is a need for sleep in a day ... In other words, our muscles need to adapt and grow - walking and swimming are not the same activities, myelin in our brains take time to develop, grow, and automate - what we call Talent, we add variation to our voice to communicate better, there is a healing power in different vibrations/wavelengths in our brains as we close our eyes, it takes time to firstly realise, accept, care for then let go of traumas and locked emotions in our bodies, in fact that process happen one by one i.e. do not give up too soon, the rewards are priceless - you will experience an effortless flow and feel filled with joy etc That's the real message.

The Bible tells us Goliath was a giant due to a fallen-angel; a demon mating with a human woman (Genesis 6:4; & Numbers 13:33). Goliath had three brothers, and a father, who were also giants (2 Samuel 21:22). Therefore, Goliath did not have a pituitary-gland problem. Goliath was rightly feared as a 9-foot, 6-inch, tall, muscular warrior, who had been trained as a fighter since a young boy; meaning lifting weights to build muscle. Goliath wore a coat of mail scale armor weighing 125-pounds. Goliath's spear was anywhere from 10-feet to 26-feet long; with a shaft 2-1/2-inches in diameter; meaning Goliath had big hands. The iron spear-head weighed 15-pounds; the spear must have weighed at least 25-pounds; Goliath's large shield weighed even more, and his sword just as much. Hollywood has yet to accurately portray the size discrepancy between David and Goliath. An accurate portrayal would be a preschool boy versus Hulk Hogan in height-difference and muscular-difference. Goliath would have made a 7-foot tall man look very short; being 2-1/2-feet taller. 2.5-feet shorter than 6-feet is a 3-1/2-foot tall boy in comparison. David was probably average at 5'10" tall. The Bible tells us David was a youth; handsome, with a ruddy, pink, complexion and beautiful eyes, in other words, a boyish look. Goliath was wearing a bronze helmet; leaving just his face and lower forehead exposed to David's sling. Goliath had a strong man carrying the giant's large shield in front of Goliath; further shielding Goliath from anything but a high-placed shot. David was carrying a shepherd's stick when he approached Goliath. The job of watching a flock of sheep alone all day and night in the field for days was a boy's job; the job of the youngest boy or a servant. It was obvious to Goliath that this boy, David, was not a soldier. David was not wearing any armor. However, David had killed both a lion and a bear with his sling prior, which is no small feat; having had to hit the charging lion and bear in the head to kill them; and having about 6-seconds to do so, because charging lions and bears cover ground so incredibly fast; leaving time for only one hurried sling. Though David was a skilled marksman; David relied upon God to direct his shot.
