This commander provides Ramp, Card draw, Good keywords, Stax, A potential combo enabler, A drawback that can be managed, The mana cost of 4, 3 colors, Enters as a 4/4, Death triggers, Sacrifice triggers, Can get it, And to top it all off provides a bed (the frog) Checks all of the boxes, definitely making a deck with this

This card is also excellent when facing against green silly stuff, because no one cares how many +1/+1 counters little Timmy's hydra has when you have MtG's forbidden keyword combo slapped on top of your allegedly value engine commander.

Adding trample to these keywords makes it truly forbidden, assigning a single damage to the 12/12 and letting the rest trample over is the salt in the wound of the 4/4 surviving the attack

@@TheLuckySpades You can do that with Trample Deathtouch? I thought trample still had to eat through the full toughness first, but that's cool if DT functionally sets toughness to 1 for that purpose.

@@snowboundwhale6860 yes it does, deathtouch is defined as "any single point of damage is considered lethal", which yes, works the same as if the target had 1 toughness. Then trample comes in and says "any damage that exceeds the lethal damage dealt to blockers is dealt to the opponent", so one damage is the lethal one and the rest goes through. This is different from "whenever this creature deals damage to a creature, destroy it", because yes in these cases you'd have to eat through the toughness first.

I ask for the dumbest commander I've seen: Ormos, Archive Keeper. Drawing on an empty library not to win but to get the sphinx to work out? Just the right kind of dumb that sends a 5/5 with a billion counters at someone's face while I hold an entire library of cards

I think it works pretty well with stuff like Mythril Coat or other protective equipment, probably lends well to running counterspells too so you always draw the out

I'm surprised you didn't even mention the absolute brutal combination that is a first strike/deathtouch creature. They don't even need to care about the "cost" to attack with them that's a terrifying threat on a blocker right there. i started building my Thalrog deck when this card was first previewed. it’s been through a few edits but the deck is such a valuetown freight train that it outpaces + flattens any other deck lmao. i can get her out by Turn 3, infinitely combo by Turn 3, get to 10+ mana by Turn 6, play 4 lands a turn, play almost anything off the top of my library, recur lands with Crucible of Worlds so i don’t have to lose my main creatures, draw a metric fknton of cards, pick apart peoples boards AND slow everybody down - and that’s all BEFORE the beatdown plan of using Thalrog herself to deal damage. combat is literally just gravy on top of the endless value she provides 😂 this has been my absolute number 1 favorite commander deck of all time (that i’ve ever built). i play her as my main deck and the salt levels are over 9000. when you cause the MILL player to complain and cry, you KNOW you’ve done a great job of building an absurd deck lmaooo.

If the OG gitrog didn't scar me enough back in the days it's best known combo line was nondeterministic, thalrog would be picking up the slack. Even if you set up a blocker they kill your dude or get suprise trample, and you can't race by combo because your lines get staxed out. I love it.
