As preparations for president-elect Mohamed Muizzu's swearing-in ceremony on November 17 get under way, Talk to Al Jazeera travels to Male, the capital of the Maldives, to find out how regional dynamics may change under his administration and what this could mean for the country and its people.

As a Singaporean, I can fully understand the correct attitude that you have because we here in Singapore is also very sensitive about our sovereignty when we are too near geographically to a large neighbour, especially if it proves in the past to be interfering with her smaller neighbours' domestic politics. Maldives should naturally NOT want to be under any foreign military presence in her own land, as there is always a danger that if a more ambitious government that craves dominance in her region. The problem with having foreign military inside one's territory is that, if in future, for whatever potential reason the neighbouring leader may turns hostile, then it is very possible that the foreign military may covertly work from the inside to pose a real security threat! The interviewer try to drive a wedge between India and Maldives. Indians were in Maldives to protect their interest of the then Maldivian Govt. I don't see a possibility of sudden boom or a sudden fall. It will grow as the country diversifies from agriculture to manufacturing while keeping it's already functioning service sector steady. In every country there will be a few companies that are too big to fail and they are the ones who bring foreign technology and R&D into the country which gradually percolates to other large,medium and small scale businesses. Profitability is not the only motive of such buisnesses. In the case of China's evergrande even though it was in a very bad shape the govt stepped in to save the company as they can't afford the collapse of such a giant. Likewise, profitability though is very important they need not worry much as the Indian economy is behind them. We as taxpayers have to take the burden but we also understand that some burdens also benefit us.

Number of tourists and revenue earned are not the same. indian tourist to Maldives do not spend anywhere near the tourists from Europe, North America and other South East Asian nations. So total earning from indian tourists only constitute 6% of total all tourists. You can get the data from the Maldives Tourism Board. As for developing the Lakshadweep Islands that would be difficult considering the size of each island and the distance from each islands. But good luck trying. Either way its unlikely to effect Maldives much.

90s and early 2000s Maldives economy and major revenue depended on EU&G7 , then the Great recession occurred, It was China that filled the hole to manage the economy. Then covid came and it was tourists from East europe India US/Gulf that played a huge role to fill gaps, now we Maldives learned that in this world u should have good relationship with all the countries, especially a country like Maldives.

India should have a hands-off approach with the Maldives as they do not need any aid. Maldives per capita income is one of the highest in South Asia, and do not need any aid.
