The thing is Taekwondo isn’t like boxing. Taekwondo isn’t about knocking out the opponent first it’s about score so they have to play defensively

I do Taekwondo (2nd Dan) and this was boring. They are wayyy too defensive. It's mostly about strategy and attack.

kamali saravanan like a real fight should be when you pre-empt it? Don’t get me wrong I know fights can also be dynamic fast and explosive, but if you put two guys against each other knowingly, there is a lot of strategy (same in UFC except the fights end quicker via more techniques being allowed in the rules).

When I was practicing taekwondo in the early 1970s, we didn't have padded gloves, padded shoes, padded heads, or body armor. Occasionally a tournament or instructor would require a protective cup for male practitioners and that was about it. Who could afford all that stuff? We relied on technique, self control, and true sportsmanship to avoid injuries, and injuries were very rare.

we have to speak Korean in my Dojo^^ I remember my first day 9 years ago I was only 7 years old and when he asked if I wanted to learn Korean I had no idea what it was so I just said no and he told me to go home, then I went back when I found out what it was and said I wanted to earn Korean xD I'm Swedish, there's only 9 people in our Dojo (on Thursday and Friday for black belts) and we are all fluent in Korean and English and Swedish but some speak better Korean than English. Anyway I have never been to any actual competition because I'm afraid of getting kicked in the face lol

I was thinking the same thing. Older tkd was not just quicker pace but also had way more setups, stance changes (switch neither utilized), and combinations. Every spin I saw really had nothing behind it, whether a back or heel kick. And alot of kicks barely cleared the belt. Tkd knockouts are very dangerous and caused alot of head trauma but the sport should have reinvent the wheel with better helmets than minimizing head kicks. Be like Dk yoo and get some motorcycle helmets, just modified

itf is just an inferior version of karate, and really ugly one. wtf at least has more its own personality and looks very different from any martial arts. but i agree, the rules in taekwondo need to change to make sport more watchable - may be get rid of body armours, or make sure only powerful kicks are scored, no touching will be discouraged.

why is it that, most of local TKD competition shown in youtube look pretty similar to so-called old style TKD in 80's and 90's and 00's, but most of international level match look like above clip where both fighters spend so much time doing footwork and majority of kicks, if not all, are front kick turn kick or sidekicks and round house kicks? no back kick, no turning roundhouse, none of those spinning kicks..

@TheMcgillacuddy

I take TKD and our instructors always tell us to keep our hands up. TKD is more about dodging attacks than blocking, so you're gonna be doing a lot of backing away, counter kicking, and head movement away from high kicks. It's a very non-technical and vulnerable martial art but it's fun and still requires a lot of athleticism to master. Also, people complain that fighters don't go all out nowadays, but they're just trying to get points, not burn themselves out. It's not a fight, but more like a game of rock paper scissors.
@obviouslyanonymous
@obviouslyanonymous 7 жыл бұрын
daniel smith Not to be rude but have you heard of a wedging block? The reason they keep their hands down is because at this level head kicks are rare due to the risks involved and same thing goes with punching

Viet Le I've only competed twice since I have intentions of being aggressive during sparring. The only nerves you hit were my hand ready to smack you for being a moron -__-. They train in an old and new way. And that's what throws their opponents off.
