Societies are never stagnant and unfortunately along with the good we also sometimes let go of things we really NEED in society.

@@adamg.6615 I’m a Navajo man. I know that colonizers have tried to co-opt the idea of Nadgleeh for their own perverse philosophy. It’s specifically because I know what Nadgleeh means and how they attempt to use it that I don’t buy the idea that “other tribes” believe in “two spirits”. I was raised Navajo. I know what’s Navajo tradition and what isn’t. Alternative genders is part of cultural deconstructionalism aimed at destroying Traditional Native American values. There are only men and women. Nadgleeh refers to men or women who have knowledge traditionally held by the opposite sex. The wife of a medicine man is a Nadgleeh because she witnesses traditional medicine man ceremonies. She isn’t a “third gender”. She can train a medicine man, by passing on her knowledge of the ceremonies onto a new medicine man. She is still a women, has a husband, and bears children. This is why the Creation story is important, during the separation of the sexes some women knew how to hunt. Those women were Nadgleeh. Some men knew how to make pots. Those men were Nadgleeh. They weren’t “two spirit” or a “new gender”, they had a life skill that was traditionally filled by a person of the opposite gender. A female car mechanic isn’t a new gender because she knows a lot about cars. A male Teacher isn’t a new gender because he interfaces and instructs children. There are only men and women. Men and women can have a masculine or feminine personality, but this doesn’t change their gender.
