I think it’s all about trust. Get to know the doctor before you have unsure feelings about what happens next. I have a male gynecologist and I’m 14 years old. He does not make me uncomfortable and if I was, he tells me what he’s going to do before he does it and there’s always someone in the room with. I also had to have a pelvic+bladder exam done and a male doctor had to do it because he was available at the time. He was super cool and we even cracked jokes and explained what happens during the ultrasound. It’s not all that bad.

Did no one say because of sexual trauma? I have no issue with male gynecologists but with my trauma I can barely get through a visit, even without an exam, with a woman gynecologist. It has nothing to do with the man himself. It's just the trauma I have. I hope that makes sense. It's not that I feel like a male gynecologist would do anything inappropriate, I'm just at a place in my trauma recovery where that's a bit too much.

This topic gets brought up every no and then and recently I had a discussion with several of my female colleagues who all PREFERRED male gynco's because they, in their opinion, male doctors are more attentive to their concerns and, again in the opinion, aren't as dismissive. Now, that's not a stab at female doctors by any means, but to the three women I was chatting with that was their shared opinion. That because the female gynco also has menstrual discomfort and pain, it can be easy to dismiss patient's feelings and pain as 'normal'.

I think I wouldn't judge a doctor on the basis of their gender. A doctor is a doctor. And I won't particularly ask for a female gynecologist because all my comfort lies with how I feel and how the doctor behaves. If he/she is a professional, has a nurse at standby and allows me to take a loved one inside with me, I have no problem with that. And Same for female gynecologist as well. Because I believe that both females and males can be predators. The chances are even. So I wouldn't go and look for a female gynecologist or ask for one. I just need a doctor who can help me out with my problems. And if I find the doctor unprofessional, I'll go to a different doctor next time, regardless of the gender

If you are in relationship, the relationship isn’t all about just the man or the women. If the man loves his partner, I think it is reasonable and responsible to be concerned about these types of exams. Likewise, if the woman loves her man and If the situation isn’t an emergency why can’t the couple take a little time and find a doctor that is right for both of them. Why should a male gynecologist not be able to relate to feelings of pain, grief, anger or any other emotion you can think of? Or do you mean the physical aspects like localizing where exactly the pain is? A female gynecologist did not experience all possible symptoms of all possible conditions a patient could come to her by herself. @SkydivingSquid2 жыл бұрын
They rotate during residency and may find passion in that field, find they are very good at it, may have had an awesome rotation under their attendings, or have been offered a job. I know a few male doctors who chose pediatrics despite it being 'frowned upon', but they had such a positive experience that's what the ended up choosing. I would imagine it's the same here... though it is important to remember, medicine is often not 'beautiful'. Think of what kind of person is TYPICALLY going to see a doctor. Normally someone who has something wrong.. yes women are recommended to have annual exams, but this isn't 'porn hub'. The female reproductive system is very complicated and susceptible to many issues and different unpleasant diseases and infections... and it gets worse as you age.. ergo, you aren't always going to get 'a beautiful flower' on some 'smoking hot super model' - but instead probably gramma who has had a terrible itchy rash and smelly discharge who can't take it anymore.. THAT is the reality of work.. everyone thinks (ignorantly) oh it's a man who just wants to be a perv... no no no. Not by a looooooong shot. These are professionals who can separate medicine from anything and everything else. Their patients, though people, are seen as medical cases, and sometimes, just medical cases.. many physicians have to be reminded or trained to recognize their patients have feelings, emotions, concerns and fears.. 'the human side' of it.. that's how professional physicians can become that they entirely separate themselves from the human side (including sexual side) and focus on problem solving (medicine).

Some years ago I wanted to become a gynecologist. My mother, Cousin and aunt all had male gynecologists and since I saw them as people who helped people I love I thought it would be good to be like that person, who makes sure others' mothers, cousins, sisters, daughters etc are healthy and help them. For better or worse after highschool I went to do my apprenticeship as CNA (my highschool was vocational one so I had to do 6 months of apprenticeship in a hospital afterwards) and there I grew attached to the elderly patients and liked how the physiotherapists helped them get back to their lives after who knows what stuff (illness, accident, surgery etc). So from there I left the gynaecology route and went to physiotherapy route (2 year college atm) and aiming to help mostly elderly people with musculoskeletal problems. In short, to help people. And to keep them healthy and happy.
@loganleroy8622 Жыл бұрын
I can tell you. In my experience, the female reproductive system is incredibly complex with a complicated interplay of various hormones that coordinate with each other just to create a normal monthly cycle. Many physicians like something called “continuity of care”. This means you get to follow your patient from the first few weeks after they become pregnant or are first trying to conceive, then you follow the pregnancy with them across the next 8-10 months, depending on when they first come to see you. Finally you get to help bring new life into the world and perform surgeries that are on the balance between life and death for the mother and child. It’s so rewarding. It’s the one area of medicine where a patient comes to see you where nothing is actually wrong with her even if she’s now got a 2.5kg baby growing in her uterus.

Personally as a young female with no male experience i just find it extremely uncomfortable to have a random grown straight man (this is exclusing gay gynos) look and feeling around my vag. I respect that they are fully capable of being professional i just feel safer with women and i imagine many other women feel the same. I find it hard to understand the choice as a straight man to go into the field? I really dont mean to disrespect them but i find it hard to understand? Why not go into any other medical field except inspecting the genitals of the gender you're attracted to? I feel with lesbians i still feel comfortable because they have what i have and the same experience in the world and i feel they understand my point of view better. But a man will never really know what its like to have your vagina looked at. (TW: SA/R) Yes they also have genitals but men arent commonly sexually harrassed like most women will experience throughout their lives. I know its not all men, but men as a general catagory are much more likely to sexually assault or rape a women then vice versa. Yes it does happen but its significantly more uncommon. How does a man whose fully professional about his position not think that his clientel will likely be limited in the field? If anyone has any points or disagreements i would love to have a ~respectful~ discussion with you. Im really not trying to attack anyone and i would love to understamd the other side if anyone wants to explain to me. If you read all this, thanks, thats impressive. 👏👏👏
