A hyena clan was trying to intimidate a male lion off his meal but were unable to. The male lion was not impressed to say the least.

Lions are ambush predators. Very possible that he actually caught it himself. Especially during the rut. Rams get so caught up in winning mating rights they often don't see predators coming until it's too late. Also very possible that he stole it. Free food, why not.

Seems to me that, yes, the hyenas were trying to intimidate him, but no one wants a real fight. The hyenas benefitted from waiting until the lion was done then were awarded with the leftovers. No fight means guaranteed (although less) food with guaranteed no injuries. A fight means likely serious injury and maybe a little more food or maybe no food.

If anything the hyenas probably *want* him to lash out because in order to do so he has to let go of his food so they can steal it. He can't attack all of them at once and as soon as he attacks 1 another 5 or 10 are going to join in which, while probably not enough to kill him, is easily enough to keep him busy while the rest make off with his food. Hyenas get buffalo calves this way all the time despite the mom's best efforts to protect it. Wolves can do the same thing to get moose calves even though the mom is a behemoth compared to them. Lions do the same thing sometimes whenever one of the bigger and stronger members of a herd try to run them off - if they can make the kill then and there they do so but oftentimes it's easier/safer to just keep him busy while other members of the pride take down a calf or two or some otherwise weaker member(s) of the herd. I assume this makes lions less likely to fall for it when other predators try it on them, which would explain why the lion doesn't attack despite being clearly agitated by the hyenas.
