R & B/Soul didn't die, the artist aren't getting the same push as before. Also, the radio had people too dependent on what's good or not. There's still great music but a lot of artist aren't being heard.

R&B was about experiencing deep emotions it was about singing your heart out while you're crying under the rain No one cares about that anymore People learned to act like they don't have a heart anymore Like love is a cringy thing Good music will comeback when people stop acting like they are to good to have emotions

R&B isn't dead completely but has definitely went away from what it was originally in the past. We went from R&B singers talking about loving a woman to simp level degrees to now R&B singers talking about taking another man's girl and catching a rapper's fade. Chris Brown has definitely taken on more of the pop and even rap sound that sees him make a lot of bubble gum R&B music when in reality he's truly one of the best singers in the game when he delivers sultry R&B cuts and dance/club records.

The female artists are on top by far now in R&B. The dudes in the genre ain’t even a factor anymore for the most part. 50% of what the female artist talk about can’t be understood or felt by straight dudes at least and then the female audience isn’t as consistent because the male artists aren’t that good so a lot of the audience isn’t as present as they used to be. And with the rappers singing/melodic flows now then that audience moved over there.

It’s all about sex, drugs and infidelity now. Used to be about lovemaking, staying together, being loyal or falling in love, being treated better by someone than your last partner treated you. It’s sad af tbh. Goes to show what the goal is. What happened to the Keith Sweats? The Tanks? The Tyreses? The Jodeci’s? The Dru Hills? Etc. what happened to THOSE types of people that made those songs? Hell even Chingy had some hits that I still play to this day, like One Call Away. That brings back so many memories. Music like THAT is what we need these days.

A lack of vulnerability in the music of today's male RNB artists is very present. Even in the 2000s where the hip hop influence was as evident as its ever been, artists could still tap in to their weakest emotions and turn it into a strength in their records. Times do change but that aspect should be a constant.

Or R&B male crooners died because the stuff men used to sing about is considered simping now. There aren't that many men willing to beg a woman to stay or apologize for hurting their woman's feelings or sensually pleasing a woman or anything like that, stuff we used to sing about. Now it's "fuk these h*es" and "it's not your girl, it's just your turn" mentality.

Thats all we got 😭.

It’s bigger than that. It’s the entertainment industry period. It’s a lack of originality due to the progression of the entire industry, and where it has gone from where it was before. It was about the craft because less people were involved. But as with everything, too many hands in the cookie jar changes the value of the cookie. Lawyers and businessmen are making the creative decisions. Music, sport, movies make more due to streaming and therefore have been bought out

R&B is dead because of these things: 1. Church attendance is down; 2. Streaming encourages shorter songs; 3. Too many songs are too slow; 4. Very little music is made for the purpose of dancing on a dancefloor with other people; 5. Fewer young people know how to play instruments; 6. The structure of Hip-Hop ruined R&B over a period of about 25 years (since the late 90s); 7. Young men only want to rap - very few of them want to be straight ahead singers or instrumentalists.

R&B is about emotions, love, respect, passion and so much more missing from relationships!! How has Chris “struggled to adapt to the change in R&B” when he’s been able to chart atleast one song on the hot 100 since 2005 and has had a top 10 every year since 2018(2 of those songs charted for more than 50+ weeks btw). He also has sold almost 200 million records world wide and tends to have success when it comes to charting with R&B songs. If anything his male peers have struggled to adapt and go on group tours performing their old hits(ex: B2K & Omarion). Now in regards to Breezy doing less successful than his other albums that has a lot more to do with how terribly he promoted it and less to do with him struggling to adapt(he barely did any promo for the album until like the last 2 weeks before it dropped, the entire promo campaign was disorganized, chose a terrible lead single(first single should’ve been “sleep at night”, “warm embrace”, or “call me everyday” not “iffy”, and then acted surprised when it didn’t perform as well as “Indigo” did when the promotion/singles he chose for his last album was leagues better than this one)

But I agree, the first song I've heard from The Weeknd was One of Those Nights and he had a completely different tone from now. It's that "souless" feeling you talk. Unfortunately, Hip Hop is going 11 years on that road and it doesn't show signs of changing

I see your point but I also think that sometimes you want to make good sounding music for the sake of good sounding music. As an artist, sometimes I just want to make something visually appealing, without a deep story behind it. A song being soulless isn’t an inherently bad thing, blinding lights is an amazing song regardless. It makes sense for an album to have a mixture of songs with deeper stories and songs that are more lighthearted and more ”shallow”.

Male R&B needs more Teddy Riley’s,Dallas Austin’s,Babyface & Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Men subject matter in R&B is trash women R&B always going have the advantage cause they can be emotional & vulnerable as women. For some strange men R&B is a whole different vibe to it.

What annoyed me is when T-Pain spoke on the Chris Brown situation, and was someone that has known Chris for a very long time (and they both we're on the same labels up till maybe 2016,2018). Everyone (mostly CB stans) got pissy mad and called Pain a hater. But the funny thing is he wasn't really lying, Chris Brown has always been a priority at RCA. Even through the Rihanna incident, RCA kept Chris on the radio and pulled all the stops to keep his music profitable. Nobody could actually stop the evolution that R&B was going through, R&B was already evolving by the early 2010's with records like Marvin's Room, 4 AM, Mr. Wrong by Mary J Blige, Thinking about you, and of course most of The Weekend's early albums all connect to what R&B was going to become. But as Trap also became very popular on mainstream radio by 2013, it was evident that both genres would come together. Chris got to benefit from this evolution (whether he wants to admit that or not) by simply adapting to the trends. From his hit record Loyal riding off of the DJ Mustard trend that was big around 2014-2016, to the now "trapsoul" sound that Bryson Tiller is credited on inspiring. All of these different "trends" in R&B led the genre to be in this now slow mellow 808 driven style and Chris has adapted to this trend. But R&B isn't as valuable today as it was 15 or 20 years ago and a lot of R&B acts have had to balance the fine line between being an R&B act, and being an Pop act. It's weird because we live in a genre less culture now, so you have someone like Harry Styles rocking his Bowie, Prince inspired style of music and winning Album Of The Year. You have Bruno who's been jumping from decade to decade in music and I'm sure will arrive in the 2000s sometime soon. And again The Weeknd who's pretty much doing whatever he wants musically and I would not be shocked if he doesn't release a rock album in the near future. The truth of the matter is the R&B market is crowded heavily, and Chris's music though very good and he's always evolving as an artist and adapting to the new trends, his music has become stagnant. His public image does not help either considering how often his name is in some type of "incident", and again adapting to trends. Chris Brown was heralded as baby MJ, he was the first act to actually be able to compete with Usher on the charts and won that battle. All his peers from Omarion, to The Dream, to T-Pain, to Mario etc all have had to watch their careers slowly fade into the background for new stars on the rise, but Chris Brown was the exception. Honestly I just think Chris is finally hitting that point in his career like most artist where the public may be slowly pushing him into the background because they are loosing interest. But he's still a legend among his peers and it should be understood what he has achieved in R&B along side his peers.

I think one thing that people don't think about when it comes to this whole rnb is dead conversation is how much we as an audience have trained to prefer a certain type of sound. We have these unrealistic expectation that artists will have the same sound throughout their entire career. Usher will never make an album that sounds like confessions. Alicia keys will never make another record like songs in A minor. They are called artists for a reason. However, due to how the industry has used music and other forms of art for profit, we as an audience tend to engage with art more like a product than as a body of work. We do the same thing with artists as well. We say that if they don't make a record that has the same sound as what made us fall in love with their music, that they fell off or they're trash. I have noticed that seems to especially be an issue in black music. Black artists just like most artists don't want to be put in a box. I can't tell you how many of the most influential artists have said this. If we want R&B music to thrive, and if we say that we don't want to be typecast or or put in a box as a culture, I think we should give the same grace to those that have contributed so much to our culture. If it wasn't for artists like Michael, Prince, and Sade, there would be no Maxwell, D'angelo, or Eykah badu. The same can be said For artists like Miguel, Frank Ocean, the Weeknd, who opened the door for R&B artists to not only have success in the mainstream but also make quality material that aligns with their vision and creativity. Without them, I doubt artists like steve lacy, daniel Cesar, H.E.R., SZA, kehlani, and others would have a lane at all. Just for that, I think we should support them and not put them in the same box that the industry for so long as done to us as a culture.

He had a whole tour sell out in under 3 minutes. 6 of those dates were the o2 at 20k seats, so he sold 120k seats in London alone not including the other cities and parts of Europe he sold out and added extra dates to. CB is versatile, not just does he sing and dance but he gives the visuals showing the artistic side to his creativity in his music videos and shows. Plus has many talents outside of just music alone.

At work, what gets played the most is toxic, vulgar rap music. That's what most young guys (and women) are listening to. It promotes toxicity in relationships. This is why hook up culture is a thing now where women are sleeping with lots more men than before. Romance is dead. Why sing about romance when there isn't even an audience for it?! I grew up listening to a lot of R&B in the 80s and 90s and still do but today's music is so toxic. I don't think it's going to get better since society is so screwed up. Dating is pretty much dead. R&B isn’t dead at all, the problem is that the majority only want what’s popular instead of what the actually like. Many popular albums have real slow jams but most underground artists have the REAL R&B music.

Whoever say that R&B is dead has no clue bout music, cause rnb just as hip hop, alternative rock, trap and every other music genre of course will not sound exactly the same as it sounded 20 years ago, music and music genres evolve and will keep evolving

As a black woman in her 40s, let me tell you what happened... They all cheated or abused women! We don't believe in thier music anymore and we are the ones who need to be impressed. Now, that was definitely a broad stroke that needs to be dissected, but does sums it up. Rnb died when social media opened the door for "options". Rnb can only survive by my age group of women. We are exhausted by being lied to by our men and won't pursue or purchase the music.

Maybe if the most popular and successful male R&B singers weren’t also notorious for abusing and assaulting people the genre might stand a better chance. R Kelly, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Tory Lanez, Michael Jackson the list goes on

R&B lost it soul. Once about a time R&B was so powerful it conceived a generation. It was called baby making music. At the shows Girls were fainting, crying and throwing their panties on stage. You was on some real playa shit pulling up on a girl bumping some Luther Vandross or Silk in the ride.

conventional r&b may not be popular today like before. but r&b as a whole genre is not dead. the music we hear now.. ppl call it trap soul or alternative r&b. just like back in rhe 90s alternative rock & depressing rock music took over from regular rock & metal music. its abt rhe same thing here. its like r&b is going in the alternative direction. mixing r&b soul with electronica, ambient music & even smooth jazz like ella mai. &:most of the lyrics today are abt drugs & toxic relationships and depression just like the lyrics of most alternative rock & grunge songs back then.

It’s really not that complicated. The 70’s R and B sound (Temptations, Isley Brothers, Earth Wind and Fire) was killed by 80’s R and B sound (Rick James, Prince, M.Jackson) which was killed by the 90’s r and b sound (R Kelly, Usher, 112) which was killed by the 2000 R and B sound (The Dream, T-Pain, C,Bown). If anything the biggest difference between the past and present is for the first time in history the genre is mostly female lead and that’s not a bad thing just something to get use to.Also in the past male toxicity and bravado was high af so alot if dudes liked R and B to tamp down the overwhelming amount of violent tough guy music that dominate the charts. Now let’s be real rap is sensitive af so that need for something softer ain’t quite there 🤷🏾‍♂️

Listen to Hip Hop / RnB productions now compared to the 2000s, its mostly the same simplified formulas. There's no unique productions on radio like a Keri Hilson - Knock You Down, or a Kelis - Caught Out There. It's the same repeated 808 beats, drums and chords.

Basically the plan to divid black women and men worked. We are coming to a generation where trust is void and everybody for themselves. That means nobody wants to hear nothing about love and sticking together. They wanna hear f**k that ni**a and f**k that b*tch. Rap has taken over the slow melodies. We are now entering the land of the lost. It’s gone get to a point when you have to include a categories on is this song about a woman or trans. It’s getting to be to much. I’m glad I was able to witness a some what normal state of music. This new stuff wild.
