Maligne Canyon Jasper National Park Canada

Discover the deepest canyon in the Rockies.
Maligne Canyon is the deepest canyon in Jasper National Park, with a depth of more than 50 metres at certain points. Hikers of all abilities can explore this incredible natural landmark by crossing six bridges built across various points of the canyon, eroded out of the Palliser Formation. Flowing out of Medicine Lake, the Maligne River flows about 15 kilometers upstream as a full size river, but as a losing stream, quickly disappears into seeps in the ground and completely vanishes from the surface not far from the lake for most of the year. The smaller streams that feed the valley below that point rebuild the river by the time it reaches the top of the canyon. The river drops down the canyon and intersects the bedrock layers where the underground river flows. Also at this point numerous large underground streams join and greatly amplify the flow. The canyon is constantly being eroded by the churning and swirling of the water. The effect of this has made the width 2 metres (6.6 ft) across at some points and a depth of 50 metres (160 ft). Limestone is one of the most dominant minerals within the canyon. It was deposited in a shallow tropical sea by plankton which secrete limestone.
This is a fabulous walk alongside a jaw dropping canyon. It is a slot canyon - over 50 meters deep and features beautiful waterfalls as you hike along the Maligne River. Beautiful rushing waters have carved out this canyon; it is amazing to see the power of water carving a canyon out of solid rock! Many people only did bridges 1-3 from the car park at the top. I thing you are missing out because the part between 3-5 was my favourite with rapids, springs joining the river and the whole thing building to a crescendo at bridge 6. Amazing canyon with so many different rock formations carved out over centuries by the river. To diversify the return to the parking lot in front of the bridge, number 6, we turned onto the 7h trail. What pleased us the most was the panoramic view from the 7h trail as it is along a steep hill side.

@@TravelAdventurePassions no i don't run a hiking group,i would like to start hiking but with some experienced or organized group since I don't have experience. I have like your video and just asked to see.

We can take you out but the next time we will be at this particular canyon will probably be January or February depending on weather. The canyon has to freeze properly in order to be able to walk it. We live in Edmonton so we would be going from there
