Since it opened its doors in 1992, the Mall of America(r) has transformed the shopping experience for hundreds of millions of customers every year. Background In 1982, the Minnesota Twins and Vikings relocated from the Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington to the H.H.H. Metrodome situated in downtown Minneapolis. This opened up an incredible potential for the development of 78 acres worth of prime property. Three years after it was the time Bloomington Port Authority purchased the stadium site and began to consider plans for development.
Mall of America was chosen out of four options and on June 14th, 1989, developers and dignitaries from the local community started construction. In August of 1992, the day that the Mall of America(r) was officially opened the first 330 stores were open to the public and over 10,000 employees began the day with a new jobs.
Today, the Mall of America hosts more than 400 events per year, which range from concerts to celebrity appearances, fashion shows, and more. Every year, more than 40 million people from all over the globe visit the mall, creating more than $2 billion in economic value to the State.
