I disagree with the claims that Jude Bellingham is overrated and just being hyped by the English Media. For one, it is true that the English media overhypes their players almost all the time but Jude being a star in Germany and Spain, without playing any of his major club football in England, has nothing to do with the English media. He scored an insane amount of goals for Madrid and to win La Liga player of the year in his first season at Real Madrid had nothing to do with the English Media. The Spanish media hyped him as much throughout the season and from what Legends like Henry say, the Spanish media is even more intense and critical. This is all to say that: 1. Jude is who he thinks he is, and who England players and Coaches think he is. His shout for the Ballon d'Or is very legitimate. I personally like Vini to win ahead of Jude, but do not let Southgate’s terrible coaching undermine Jude’s ability in your eyes. Danny always mentions how coaching instructions have hurt the careers and performances of several players like Jordan, Inaki etc, so let’s not pretend that that is not what is happening here. 2. Southgate is just a terrible coach. Jude playing in the 10 role for Madrid, had little to no defensive duties. Because he was playing as part of a midfield 4 with his at the top of the diamond, and usually had Kroos, Tsuameni, and Valverde behind him to provide a solid defensive cover. So his licence to attack and move forward, came with no pressure to track back that deep and that also made him closer to goal and more effective. He is a really excellent finisher and so all he needed was to be closer to goal. Southgate ignores this, plays him as part of a midfield 3, and expects the same balance and structure. In simple terms, Jude was the Harry Kane in the Madrid team…. and so to have both him and Kane and expect him to play as he did in Madrid is outrageous. 3. His role at Madrid was probably more of a second sticker roles. Operating between the 10 and a false 9 position all throughout a game. The central space vacated by Vini and Rodrigo gave him the chance to do so. In this England team, he can’t play that way because he does not have a 3 part midfield to relieve him of any defensive duties and also has Kane not just in the central forward space, but also playing in exactly like he plays for Madrid (which is dropping deep all the time and playing more like a false 9 or a second striker than a centre forward). So if Southgate is as indeed building this team around Jude, then he is the worst coach to ever attempt to do that. And the only way he can truly do that and send that message, will be to drop Kane and allow Jude to operate at the apex of a midfield 4 and have his wingers in the gap spaces exactly like Madrid set up for him. 4. So in my opinion, it is inaccurate to claim that Southgate is building the team around Jude per what I have seen …. He is still building around Kane…. That is why even when his presence limits Jude, he’s still probably the first name on the sheet. So the only thing confirmed in this Euros is that Southgate is a very terrible coach who does nothing with data, setup, and understanding of game structures. 5. I know some of you will mention his performances in the last Champions League games but his ratings show an average of 4.2 rating out of 5 throughout those games. And again, his performances were down to instructions. He was asked to play a more defensive role just like the entire Madrid team throughout the Quaters to the Finals of the UCL. In the Semis he was played clearly as a false 9 which he said he hated because he mostly had his back to goal and had to be holding up play ….but his defensive discipline in those games were very important for Madrid. In those games it was clear the team was set up to play through Vini and Rodrigo while using Jude as the constant decoy and his scoring reputation throughout the season made him perfect for that. Jude is an exceptionally good player. To have the impact he had at Madrid this season, the comparisons to Zidane is not out of play. He is definitely not Zidane, but you can’t say the comparisons are all down to English Media P.R because in Spanish football, the English media does not control the narrative.
