Malmö is Sweden's third biggest city, and it's famous for architecture, culture, food...and for being the crime capital of Sweden.

In this video I explore the good and the bad sides of Malmö. There's a lot ot like in the city - such as the marvelous skyscraper Turning Torso, or the Öresund Bridge that connects Sweden and Denmark, or popular spots like Möllevångstorget. It's also the place where Zlatan Ibrahimovic grew up - something that the Malmö people are quite proud of.
But it's also a place of crime, racism, segregation and riots. The area called Rosengård is particularly marked as a no-go zone in Malmö. But is it really as bad as people say? I decided to have a walk around and see for myself.
Malmö is also in the spotlight for hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, something that will happen in May 2024. And it's also famous for quirky museums like the Disgusting Food Museum. Aside from all of that I also dive into the history of Malmö, and how it started as a small Danish village and quickly grew in size and significance after the 1600s and the 1700s.
And let's not forget Malmö Castle, Malmöhus slott, or the first Non-Violence Statue that can also be found in Malmö. And there's a lot more - breweries, Sherlock Holmes pubs, and other interesting sights.
There's definitely a lot of bad in Malmö. But there's a lot of good as well.

I'm originally from the northern English industrial city of Sheffield, which looks a lot like Rosengård, and has exactly the same issues. I hope that one day the violence will end. It makes me sad to see Sheffield in the news for shooting's and knife crime, but sadly it seems to be an upward trend in every UK city. Malmö itself looks nice, and I love the architecture. It is also nice to know where my Pågens krispbeads come from - and not The Disgusting Food museum! Tack så mycket for a great video Miro! You have a great day too.😊

It unfortunately seems like many places are plagued with violence and disturbances of all kinds these days. I'm still hopeful, though - I refuse to let my optimism for the future die. And Malmö is quite nice! It's small enough to get around easily, and it's still a decent size to have lots of events - as well as architecture and history. Cheers! :D

I lived a few hundred meters outside Rosengård for three years and it was not more violent there than in any other comparable poor suburb in Sweden. Many places in Gothenburg where I have lived too were more shady than Rosengård.

I've followed some KZbinrs from Malmö. A couple are still there...a few others moved to other countries and towns in Sweden, but...not because of crime: just the cold and then others wanting to be more in the country. So, my view of the town was shaped by them -- and my U.S. standards, it's seemed like a lovely city. Thank you for focusing more on the future hope of the rougher parts of Malmö -- I hope those kids are the future and can fix the issues the city faces. Because it seems like such a lovely place in more ways than its problems, and it was nice seeing you focus on that as much as its struggles. (But then, that's one of the many things you do so well! 😀 )

Now that i think about it the Malmo situation and city actually looks allot Rotterdam in Netherlands🇳🇱. Both are Port Cities. Both have a high population of foreign immigrants. Both have racism and islamophobia conflicts. Both have high crime rate. Both cities hate their popular country’s beautifull capital. Both have no go zone areas. Only differences are that Malmo is the 3th biggest city and Rotterdam is 2nd biggest city in their country. Malmo is allot more beautiful in terms of certain architecture with some really nice old buildings and castles, Rotterdam is just a heavily bombed now concrete jungle. Both cities are cities people in their country just look down on for being weird and just want to avoid at any cost. Im from Dordrecht a city 25 minutes from Rotterdam and let me tell you. No one wants to go to Rotterdam for fun. Its what they call a work city. They just want things done and don’t want to stay.

I heard about the crime before, but this is the first video that I saw that shows the beautiful side of Malmö. Historically speaking, being in the south of Sweden with its position as a trading center one would expect it to have been prosperous and have a lot of beautiful European brick architecture over the centuries, which it has. A sad story about crime, but it is not as bad as Chicago - which also has a significant Swedish immigrant history. Bloody Chicago is an interesting KZbin channel by a guy who follows the local crime as a private citizen-reporter. It is on a whole different level there than in Sweden, with an estimated 100,000+ gang members. San Francisco has a lot of petty crime because the authorities are said to have let it go, but it is not organized gangs so much like in Chicago. You can blame the federal level to a certain extent. I appreciate the police now that I am grown up and they are around when you need them and they show that they care. It is good to know the different sides to the story. Also it is good to have a balanced and realistic view for a visitor, and have an idea of what the different parts of the city are like. Nice footage of the beautiful Old Town of Malmö, with some local history as well. Most people love the European Old Town centers, and find the newer disposable “modern” architecture boring. Traditional architectural styles should be incorporated into new buildings as much as possible. A nice detailed shot in your video of the Brick-Fachwerk building in the center square - that is a really nice job they did - a good instruction for today’s builders for lasting quality aesthetics. For historical structures like that (or any kind of building to increase safety), there are various kinds of fireproof stains and paints which can be applied for extra protection. I hope they last for centuries longer. I really like Fachwerk-Tudor, Victorian and Brick Gothic which is common in the Baltic area. Victorian is actually a combination of various historical styles using the technology they had at the time. According to KZbinr Mike Haduck - Masonry, in Scandinavia you have much better designed paver sidewalks for easy maintenance and repair than in North America.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip in the USA. Besides its problems it is a great country and a lot can be learned from them. I like Americans' optimism. They make you feel like you can make it too, and not to give up. One of the most beautiful things to see are the Appalachian Mountains in the autumn season with all of the coloured leaves on the trees. They have historical places as well, but not as old as in Europe of course. Swedes in America have been very successful in business and contributed a lot to the country. Is Biden a Swedish name ? The President is from Delaware which was once New Sweden. Thanks for the great videos. Tak så mycket.

If you look at real facts, Malmö is NOT the crime capital of Sweden. Stockholm has almost triple the amount of violent crime than the whole of Malmö. This is followed by Gothenburg. As the third largest city in Sweden the third place position in this statistic comes very expected for Malmö. Eskilstuna just west of Stockholm, is the city with most reported crime per capita in Sweden. So why isn't that the "crime capital"? I would say that there's not even much racism or ethnic tensions in Malmö either, although segregation, alot of crime and daily youth misdemeanor and Urban disfunction is of course very much real thing in Malmö. I've been to other cities in Europe like Bradford or Brussels, or even deprived rural small towns of Sweden were ethnic tensions are much more visible and tangible. Malmö has a much better community spirit. Alot of the bad press about Malmö actually stems from real racism and media sensationalism,. Some people are very provoked by the multiculturalism in the city and there's alot of racist memes online about Malmö. They simply can not stand certain ethnic groups living here. I, myself live in an ethnically mixed neighbourhood in Malmö were a broken window recently became national news in Sweden. Because if anything bad happens here no matter how small, the rest of Sweden sure needs to know according to the media. Because this little piece of "evidence" can play a part in the "horrible Malmö" media narrative. Because of this branding Malmö "crime city" is pretty unfair to be honest.

A brief shot of Su Callu, another disgusting cheese from Sardinia. Farmers who make this will often park their car (usually an old Fiat Panda) by the side of busy roads and hang the cheese from a stick which is attached to the roof rack. This is pretty much the only way to buy it as it's illegal because it doesn't meet EU cheese making standards. The police / carabinieri generally turn a blind eye to the farmers selling it by the roadside.

I try to not focus on generalizations and skin color, but of course there's a lot of tension between ethnic groups. Especially now when things have been really bad for several years. I just hope that there can be a solution of some sort; a compromise maybe. As long as we don't just continue to ignore these issues. But thanks either way!
